number sense; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
pre-‐made and customizable number lines; includes drawing tools
Number Pieces Basic
Helps build skills with computation of multi-‐digit numbers Includes drawing tools
number sense; place value; represent multi-‐digit numbers, count, regroup, add, and subtract
simpler version of Number Pieces (below); includes drawing tools
Number Pieces
Helps build skills with computation of multi-‐digit numbers Includes drawing tools
(see Number Pieces Basic, above) Note: can be used to show multiplication
can introduce area models to do multiplication and division problems; includes drawing tools
Number Frames
Helps students structure numbers to five, ten, twenty, and one hundred
number sense; count, represent, compare, and compute
can make custom frames up to 100; includes drawing tools
Money Pieces
Helps students understand and use U.S. coins and dollar; connects with number pieces (one, ten, flat)
number sense; money, exchange of coins and dollars, compare, compute
can show coin values as number frames (e.g. a dime is a rod, a dollar is a flat); includes drawing tools
Pattern Shapes
Supports students’ geometric thinking and representation.
geometry; represent fractions, relationships of part to whole
can use pre-‐made shapes; includes drawing tools
Geoboard
Supports students’ geometric thinking and representation
geometry; represent fractions, relationships of part to whole
can copy and transform shapes made; includes drawing tools
Fractions
Supports students’ number sense with fraction bars and circles
fractions; represent, compare, and perform operations with fractions
shows rectangular and/or circle representations; models can be resized and values shown or hidden; includes drawing tools
Gracie & Friends apps from First 8 Studios are the product of a research-‐based project funded by the National Science Foundation and WGBH. There are free downloadable apps plus downloadable hands on materials and teacher support materials. There are 4 focused on equipartitioning and 4 focused on subitizing. Each is game-‐based and accompanied by research-‐based hands-‐on activities and resources. A set of early science apps are also available. See: http://first8studios.org/index.html
App Name Description Topic(s) Features Gracie and Friends
Birthday Cafe
Distribute groups of friends to tables, and distribute groups of food to the tables.
number sense; subitizing
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual
Gracie and Friends City Skate
Jump while skateboarding to catch representations of target values.
number sense; subitizing
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; skateboarding game with "jumping" to objects
Gracie and Friends Treasure Bubbles
(NOTE: not currently working with iOS 11 or 12) Work with a partner to pop bubbles with the target number representation.
number sense; subitizing
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; designed for collaborative work among two users
Gracie and Friends Jungle Gym
Attach jungle gym robots to each other when the number or visual on their bellies represent the same value.
number sense; subitizing
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; choice of robot and stickers
Gracie and Friends Lemonade Stand
Tilt the mobile device to distribute the ice cubes equally to all the cups.
number sense; equipartitioning
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; requires tilting mobile device
Gracie and Friends Breakfast Time
Cut up waffles, pancakes, and watermelon, as well as make bowls of yogurt and berries, the friends get equal amounts.
number sense; equipartitioning
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; choice of robot and stickers; slicing motion divides items
Gracie and Friends Park Play
Practice fair sharing using apples that are shaken down from a tree, feeding pie to birds, and distributing hula hoops to friends.

provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; multiple contexts for equipartitioning
Gracie and Friends Photo Friends
Use the mobile device camera to capture an image of the student, and see the image overlayed on animal figures; practice fair sharing between the photo friends.
number sense; equipartitioning
provides feedback; instructions are auditory and visual; incorporates two users images from the device camera
The following apps support the reinforcement of the models and tools that are the primary focus of the toolkit. These tools are targeted and provide the opportunity for customization. Many are free. Examples are shown below but others are available. Developed by Classroom Focused Software. http://www.classroomfocusedsoftware.com/math.html (NOTE: not currently working with iOS 11 or 12)
