What will you learn?

Since the financial market and the art sector have started to grow closer, and China’s influence in the art market has been increasing, we aim to start a dialogue in which old and new standards in both fields will be topics of discussion. Following this interactive three-day Masterclass will give you the skills and expertise to give advice and consult on the art market industry, from both a financial and collection perspective.

You will learn about the art market industry, gain knowledge on the history, development, and range of alternative types of exotic and emotional assets. Online data is now widely available to assess the value of art and artists over time. Which databases are available? How reliable are the data and the indexes constructed to follow changes in art prices? The development of financial products, funds specializing in fine art, the use of art as collateral and art derivatives are all developments which are changing the shape and structure of the art market.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the tools and techniques currently available to estimate and interpret the risks and returns of art finance related products. Whether interested in investing in art for financial gain, or understanding the market and products on offer to meet clients’ needs, this course will provide you the essential information and knowledge to help understand the mirage of products currently on offer.

Expertise from Van Gogh Museum is used to emphasize the interests of a collection. You will learn the differences between build-ing a private collection and a museum, how museums and collectors can collaborate to keep art accessible to the public. Herein many experiences and issues will be shared. Furthermore there will be spoken about the history and the current policies of the museum in terms of building a collection. What strategies exist here in both the short and long term and how does it contribute to the value of a collection.

Both the rational, academic approach to value and the emotional, creative approach to art collections will find a balanced place during the intense three-day Masterclass. Through the use of lectures, cases and discussion, participants will be actively encour-aged to engage in this new and exciting area of the economy.
