Welcome from the CEO 4

Intelligent operations for a 5G eraseCtIon 1

I strongly believe that the next decade will be one of opportunity for thetelecoms industry – for those who can move fast enough. Seizing the 5Gera opportunity, as established industries race to digitize, demands arevolution in telecoms companies’ operating model – transforming time-to-market from years to days; simplifying and automating across thebusiness; revolutionizing IT and embracing agile ways of working andpartnering.

TM Forum is a not-for-profit industry association with a 30-year heritagein bringing together the people behind the tools and processes that haveunderpinned growth of the telecoms industry. Our 850 membercompanies generate US$2 trillion in revenue and serve five billioncustomers across 180 countries. Members collaborate with each otherthrough the Forum to create open solutions to shared problems and thatcollaboration is reaching new levels as the pace of change accelerates.

TM Forum’s Open Digital Framework is created through the continuousexpert collaboration of our global membership and is introduced on page18 of this guide. The framework provides the blueprint for serviceproviders to deliver intelligent operations fit for the 5G era. It enables astep-change in business agility, operating cost and customer centricity byrevolutionizing the operating model of service providers and theirtechnology partners. This living framework combines the tools, knowledgeand essential standards needed to transform legacy ways of working, processes and underlying IT systems in a single framework, to enable zero-touch interoperability and ecosystem partnering.

I hope you enjoy reading this pocket guide to the Forum and learning moreabout how we are helping our members to seize 5G era opportunities.

nik Willetts, President and CEO, tM Forum

Digital leadership starts with a thought and ends with an innovave act; it is when technology is the means to disrupt the convenonal way of doing things to create a brilliant customer experience! This is exactly what we are trying to do at TM Forum: to take genuine business problems, solve them with disrupve thinking and build a maturity model around it so that the industry can benchmark itself.

Glossary(AI): Artificial intelligence (AI) is thedevelopment of computer systems capable ofperforming tasks that normally require humanintelligence; this includes visual perception(such as is required for self-driving cars), speechrecognition, decision-making, and translationbetween languages.

API: a set of functions, protocols andprocedures that allow the creation ofapplications which interact with the features ordata of external software components.Although the term API has been around foryears, at the moment there is a major trendtowards connecting ecosystem partners withREST APIs. Check out the TM Forum OpenAPIs and see how widely they are beingadopted as a standard.

Blockchain: is a continuously growing list ofrecords, called blocks, which are linked andsecured using cryptography. A blockchain canserve as an open, distributed ledger that canrecord transactions between two partiesefficiently and in a verifiable and permanentway. By design, blockchains are inherentlyresistant to modification of the data. Check outTM Forum's work on exploring use cases forblockchain relevent to our members.

CEM: Customer experience management(CEM) is the collection of processes a companyuses to track, oversee and organize everyinteraction between a customer and theorganization throughout the customer lifecycle. This is an area that has grown enormously inrecent years and with its customers gettingever more sophisticated, it’s importance is notgoing away.

DevOps: DevOps (development andoperations) is a term used to describe anoperating philosophy where developmentteams and operations teams collaborate andcommunicate much more closely and smallincremental changes are regularly applied tosystems. It looks like DevOps will be key to theagile operation of the future, check out the TMForum member work on this in the AgileOperations toolkit.

DSP: Digital Service Provider (DSP) is acompany that provides an outlet to distributemedia or services in a virtualized environment.Traditional examples are iTunes and Amazon, but as communications becomes just onecomponent of an end to end service, mostcommunication service providers aretransitioning to becoming broader digitalservice providers. That journey is at the heartof this pocket guide.

E2E: End to End (E2E), is a term used to referto the consideration of the entire service. Upuntil recently it meant considering all domainsof a service provider (like the core and accessnetworks), but today it is being used more andmore to mean a service across domains andacross different ecosystem partners as well.Check out the Forum’s work in end to endmanagement and monetization in an IoEcontext.

IoE: The Internet of Everything (IoE) is a broadterm that refers to devices and consumerproducts connected to the Internet andoutfitted with expanded digital features. It is aphilosophy in which technology's future iscomprised of many different types ofappliances, devices and items connected to theglobal Internet. Check out the Forum’s work onhow we manage, monetize and build trustacross this complex world.

Frameworx: TM Forum Frameworx is a suite ofbest practices and standards that provides acommon vocabulary and the blueprint foreffective, efficient business operations. Itenables you to assess and optimizeperformance using a proven, service-orientedapproach to operations and integration. Thepractical tools available in Frameworx helpimprove end-to-end management of servicesacross complex, multi-partner environments.

NetOps: NetOps (network and operations)network changes are made in a small numberof large, infrequent, upgrades in significantcontrast to DevOps methods where changesare small and frequent. Although many seeNetOps methods as the ‘old way’, we mustrecognise that they have helped us build amulti trillion dollar industry, and so migration ina thoughtful way is important. Check out theForum’s work in this area in the AgileOperations Toolkit.

NFV: Network functions virtualization (NFV) isan initiative to virtualize the network servicesthat are now being carried out by proprietary, dedicated hardware appliances. If successful,NFV will decouple the software service fromthe hardware and decrease the amount ofproprietary hardware that's needed to launchand operate network services. NFV brings withit enormous flexibility, but with flexibility comescomplexity which must be managed. Check outthe Forum’s work on realising the businessbenefits of NFV in our ZOOM project and inour Agile OSS and Agile Operations toolkits.

Omnichannel: Omnichannel uses a variety ofchannels during a customer's experienceincluding research before a purchase. Suchchannels include stores, online stores/website,mobile stores, mobile app stores, telephonesales and any other method of transacting witha customer. Understanding this new way ofinteracting with customers will be critical tobusiness success going forward. Check out theForum’s publications and workshops in this area.

Open Digital Framework: Open DigitalFramework provides the blueprint for serviceproviders to deliver intelligent operations fit forthe 5G era. The framework enables a step-change in business agility, operating cost andcustomer centricity by revolutionizing theoperating model of service providers and theirtechnology partners. Created throughcontinuous global expert collaboration, thisliving framework combines the tools, knowledge and essential standards needed totransform legacy ways of working, processesand underlying IT systems in a singleframework, to enable zero-touchinteroperability and ecosystem partnering.

Orchestration: The arrangement, sequencingand automated implementation of tasks, rulesand policies to coordinate logical and physicalresources to meet a customer or on-demandrequest to create, modify or remove network orservice resources. It is fundamental to thearchitecture of the OSS of the future, but quitea mis-understood concept. Check out the TMForum’s guides in the Agile OSS toolkit.

REST based API: REST (Representational StateTransfer) relies on a stateless, client-server,cacheable communications protocol -- and invirtually all cases, the HTTP protocol is used.REST is an architecture style for designingnetworked applications. See the entry on APIsto understand the importance of this area.

VNF: A virtual implementation of an NetworkFunction that can be deployed on a NetworkFunction Virtualisation Infrastructure (NFVI).Managing VNFs is something that the TMForum ZOOM project has been studying forsome years. An area of particular interest at themoment is how an DSP can select, procure andthen automatically onboard new VNFs intotheir infrastructure.
