INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM(SKIN)System Main Function & Main Organs
By Miaoming He
Main Function
Main Function
Protect the body's internal living tissues and organs.
Protect against invasion by infectious organisms. Protect the body against sunburns by secreting
melanin. Generate vitamin D through exposure to
ultraviolet light. Store water, fat, glucose, and vitamin D. Maintenance of the body form.
Main Organs
Skin Hair Nails
The Skin made of two dermal layers.
• Epidermis: The outermost layer of skin. It forms the waterproof barrier over the body.
• Dermis: It lies below the epidermis. It contains blood vessels, hair follicles and various glands.
Hair is a filamentous biomaterial, that grows from follicles found in the dermis.
Hair is one of the defining characteristics of mammals.
Nails are a hard layer of keratinized cells and they develop from the epidermis.
Nails are present on the end of fingers provide protection to the tips of toes and fingers.

MAIN PROBLEMS AND DISEASE
By: Salem Abraha
Skin Diseases
• Vitiligo-is a disorder most
common found in people
suffering from dry and patchy
skin.
• Condition is normal- no
irritation or itching just
unappealing to look at.
Skin diseases are very common and can be diagnosed and identified within a short span of time.
Acne
About:
• Is a disease of the hair follicles of the
face, chest, and back.
• Affects almost all males & females
during puberty.
• Not unusual for women in mid-late 20’s
to develop acne.
• Acne is not caused by bacteria but
bacteria does play a role in its
development.
Acne Continued…Appears on skin as:
• Congested pores (black/white
heads)
• Tender red bumps
(pimples/zits)
• Pustules
• Cysts (deep pimples, boils)Caused by:
• Increased oil production -the skin cells mature so that they are predisposed to clog the follicular openings (pores). -As the follicle enlarges it produces varies different stages of acne.
Skin Cancer
• Most common type of cancer
• More than 2 million cases are found in
the U.S
• Of those 2 million, Melanoma most
dangerous type of skin cancer
accounts for
75,000 cases.
Basal and Squamous cells
• Found at the base of the outer layer
of skin.
• Most cells are developed on sun-
exposed areas of body.
• Can be fast or slow growing .
• Rarely spreads to other parts of
body.
• Highly likely to be cured if found
early.
Melanoma
• Beings in the melanocytes
(melanocytes produce the skins
coloring/pigment).
• Almost always curable when found in
its very early stages.
• Accounts for the 9,000 of 12,000 skin
cancer deaths each year.
Skin Cancer Continued….Risk factors:
• Unprotected/excessive
exposure to UV.
• Pale complexion
• Family history
• Multiple or unusual moles
• Severe sunburnsSymptoms:
• Any changes on skin
• Spread of color beyond border
• Change in sensation
Boils
It’s a localized infection in the skin.
Anyone can get boils.
Beings as a reddened, tender area
then eventually the center of the
boil softens and is filled with an
infection.
Fighting white blood cells
eradicates the infection.
A collection of white blood cells,
bacteria, and protein is known as
pus.
Types of Boils
Furuncle/carbuncle: Has more than one opening onto the
skin. Occurs within a hair follicle.
Cystic acne: Formed when oil ducts become clogged
and infected.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Multiple abscesses that form under
armpits and groin areas.
Pilonidal Cyst: Is unique occurs in the crease of the
buttocks
Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Warts
It’s a skin growth caused by types of virus
called HPV.
Effects the top layer of skin.
HPV enters body in an area of broken skin.
Virus causes top layer of skin to grow
rapidly forming a wart.
Very common in children and young adults
It can be spread by direct contact with HPV
and touching an effected area then
touching another part of body.
Types of Warts
Common Wart: Grows on hands, its rough an shaped
like a dome.
Plantar Warts: Grows on the soles of feet. Looks like hard, thick patches of skin
and may cause pain when walking.
Flat Warts: Grows on face, arms, legs. Can be pink or light brown/yellow.
Types of Warts Continued…
Filiform Warts: Is found around the mouth, nose, or
beard area. It is the same color of skin Has growths that look like threads
sticking out of them.
Periungual Warts: Grows under and around
finger/toenails. They look like rough bumps with
uneven surface. Border can affect nail growth
Fungal
Athlete’s foot: is a fungal infection of the foot. Grows best in warm, moist, environments. Causes peeling, redness, itching, and burning. Caused by microscopic fungus that lives on dead
tissue of the hair, toenails, and outer skin layers
Types:
Interdigital- occurs between two smallest toes can cause scaling and infection can also spread to the sole of foot.
Moccasin- start off as minor irritation then as develops skin may thicken and crack.
Resicular- least common; begins with sudden outbreak of fluid. Can feel blisters under skin.
MRSA
It’s a type of staph bacteria resistant to certain antibiotics.
Severe MRSA infections occur among patients in health care settings.
Symptoms: Appear as pustules or boils (red, swollen, painful, or have
pus). First looks like a spider bite. Occurs on visible skin.
People at risk: Those with weakened immune systems. Those visiting patients of MRSA. Can be spread in places were people are in close contact. In hospitals- patients can be vulnerable to MRSA.

RECENT FINDINGS & INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER SYSTEMS
By: Aliya Marulitua
(INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM)
Integumentary Interactions With other systems
Immune System: Works as the first defense mechanism Defense against infections
Endocrine System: Skin has tiny glands called Exocrine Glands that create
sweat and oil
Circulatory System: Works closely with the circulatory system and the surface
capillaries through the body (Capillaries near the surface of the skin opens when body needs to cool off- and closes when conserving heat)
Integumentary Interactions With other systems (continued…)
Digestive System: Integumentary system works with the digestive system to
encourage uptake of calcium from diets Healthy function is related to digestive system because the
digestion and assimilation of dietary fats and oils are essential for the body to be able to make the protective oils for skin and hair
Nervous System: Nervous system depends on the neurons embedded in the skin to
sense the outside world (sense of touch) Processes input from your senses, including touch, and initiates
actions based on those inputs Example: When you stub your toe, nerve cells in the foot send
signals from the leg, through the spinal cord, and up to the brain; the nerve cell connections in the brain signals that as pain
