INTEGRATION OF LANGUAGE SKILLS AND LANGUAGE ARTINTEGRATION OF LANGUAGE SKILLS AND LANGUAGE ARTIt means that the elements of literacy are developed and taught, with a set of common experiences using pieces of authentic literature. These experiences involve reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking as they would normally be used by literate learners.HOW DOES LANGUAGE SKILLS & LANGUAGE ARTS ARE INTEGRATED?Teacher should set up different ways of understanding that work through listening, speaking, reading and writing. For example, a short story can be explored through into a drama, involving the class in role-playing, pantomime, and diary writing.Teacher needs to provide an environment rich with resources for making language connections. When reading is integrated withlanguage arts,it improves not only reading but writing as well, because children see the purpose of both.Classroom environment must be safe and structured, with ample opportunities for students to use all the four language skills.Teachers can serve as models by engaging in all of these activities with their students. ADVANTAGESStudents learn all aspects of language by using language in purposeful situations (Halliday, 1975).Put the students in situations that match the way in which they naturally learn and use language. They develop better critical thinking abilities. This is especially true when reading and writing are taught together (Tierney & Shanahan, 1991).
