Wind Farm SCADA

• Networking & Communications MPLS Secure Network AT&T Circuits and Substation Substation RTU & Telemetry

• SCADA Protocols OPC for Turbine Data DNP3 for Substation Data Met Tower Data Loggers

• Vendor Diversity Multiple Turbine Vendors across Fleet Varied SCADA Footprint 10-Minute Data Interfaces

Integration Summary

Wind Farm SCADA communication is often comprised of a variety of networking device, protocols, and turbine manufacturer types.

Integration Spectrum - SCADA

10

Wind Farm SCADA

• Communication Up-And-Downs Imperfect Communications Expect the Unexpected Telco Urgency (or not)!

• Vendor Maintenance and Outages Vendor Maintenance Weather Related Outages High-Frequency Data Gaps

• Site Accessibility Difficult to get to some of the sites –

roads, remote locations, etc. Seasonal Blockades – SNOW Land-owner Rights

Integration Challenges

Wind Farm SCADA is anything but perfect, including frequent outages, remote locations, and Telco delays.

Data Collection

& Historian

• PI Data Interfaces PI-OPC Data Interface PI-DNP3 Data Interface PI-ECHO Data Interface (Met Tower)

• PI Server 2010 PI Server Data Archives PI Calculations – PI Perf. Equations PI Security – Active Directory

• PI AF Server 2010 Turbine Asset Fleet Modeling Hierarchical Demographics

• Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services 10-Minute Data Collection Extract-Transform-Load = ETL

Integration Summary

The OSIsoft PI System is data of record for the high-frequency and 10-minute data streams from all turbine vendor data sources.

Integration Spectrum - Historian

13

• Architecture Requirements PI Server 2010 = 3 Major Platforms Organization and IT Buy-In Kerberos Authentication

• Security Requirements PI Security Re-Design Cross-Domain Firewall Rules

• Vendor Normalization Differing State and Alarm codes Differing OPC standards and name-

spacing – standardize to PI AF 10-Minute data collection techniques

and methods differ significantly by vendor

Integration Challenges

Data Collection

& Historian

Migrating the PI solution may require software upgrades, security and architecture re-design, and conformity to corporate IT standards.

• Stakeholder and Business Party Reporting Turbine Filtering by Business Party External Access Rights to Domain Site Security and Authentication Kerberos!

• PI Web Part Display Upgrade Migration to new MS SharePoint tricky Display upgrades to new PI version not

automatic Kerberos!

• Custom Code Migration Custom code required a varying degree

of re-work – minor to complete re-development

Integration Challenges

Monitoring, Display, and Reporting

Migrating the displays and reports can be a very challenging, especially in areas of external report access, security, and IT standards.

Display Visibility Production Forecasting

• ISO Generation Forecasting Generation forecast to MISO Day-Ahead and Intra-Day

• ISO Generation Dispatch MISO Dispatch to Wind Farm

Integration Summary

Integration to internal and external systems, such as settlement, generation management, and ISO market systems are often required.

Integration Spectrum - Trade & Settlement

22

• ZaiNet Data Sources Special handling for 10-minute data

gaps and vendor data availability Aggregation methods differ by vendor Turbine to LLC mappings

• Wind is a different data Paradigm Wind data collection is much more

volatile than fossil or nuclear Imperfect data flows must be expected

• Web Service Interfaces to PI Web service data definitions are

customized by data topic Standardized web service adapter to PI

with XML/XSLT capabilities• MISO Integration Requirements

Integration Challenges

Trade and Settlement

Systems

Complexity of the vendor data sources and the volatility of the data streams creates challenges for integration.

Lessons Learned from Wind Integration

24

• Plan Ahead Telco delays and availability Always have a Contingency Plan

• Network Support Improve notifications for outages and

data communication failures

Wind Farm SCADA

So What Did We Learn from all of this…?

Data Collection and Historian

• Involve IT Early and Often Involve all areas of IT including

Architecture & Engineering, DBA, SharePoint, Security, etc.

Provide IT with Software Vendor Requirements and review in Detail

• Monitor SCADA Interfaces regularly

Lessons Learned from Wind Integration

25

• Revisit Report and Display Requirements Don’t assume that the previous

reporting req.’s are complete or correct• Build a Holistic Security Design

Include internal and external security req.’s and for all application layers of the solution – OSIsoft, MS, custom, etc.

Monitoring, Display, and Reporting

So What Did We Learn from all of this…?

Trade and Settlement

Systems

• Educate the Trading and Settlement Teams Wind data volatility needs to be clearly

understood and accounted for• Develop Standardized Interfaces

Leverage SOA technologies for future expansion and scalability

Utilize the PI AF architecture as the primary integration source
