    The Witness of Daily Living

People listen to witnesses ratherthan teachers.

They want testimony from peoplewho have experienced first hand.

We not only become crediblewitness when we live our faith inevery area of your life but wealso work out our salvation(Philippians 2:12).

"Preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words."(attributed to St Francis of Assisi)

Not everyone who says to Me,

    Lord, Lord, shall enter the

kingdom of heaven, but only he

who does the will of My Father

    in heaven. (Matthew 7:21)

Two Temptations of Laity tobe avoided

    1. Being so strongly interestedin Church services & tasksthat you fail to becomeactively engaged in your

responsibilities in theprofessional, social, culturaland political world.

    2. Separating the acceptance offrom the actual living of theGospel in various situations inthe world

    (Paraphrased from ChristifidelesLaicipara 2)

    Woe to you, you hypocrites!

You give a tenth of yourspices. But you have neglected

    the more important matters of

    the lawjustice, mercy and

    faithfulness. You should have

    practiced the latter, without

    neglecting the former.

    (Matthew 23:23)

What is Gods Plan for us?It is greater than we can imagine

    or even fathom.

We only need to love him aboveall else.

What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard,

    and what no human mind

    has conceived-the things God has

prepared for those wholove him (1 Cor 2:9)

What God want to make us, isimpossible for us to achieve onour own. It is gift from God andall we need to do is cooperatewith his grace.

DECISION: Will I choose to bestubborn and hold on to wantingthings to be happen my way orwill I let go and let God have hisway with me?

.. so that he, made man, might

make men gods. CCC 460It is certain that growth in the holiness of God is your vocation.

All your thoughts, words, actions, everything you suffer orundertake must lead you towards that end.

Otherwise you are resisting God in not doing the work for which

he created you and for which he is even now keeping you inbeing.

What a marvellous transformation is possible! Dust into light, uncleanness into purity, sinfulness into holiness, creature into

    Creator, man into God!

A marvellous work, I repeat, so difficult in itself, and evenimpossible for mere creature to bring about, for only God can

accomplish it by giving his grace abundantly and in anextraordinary manner. The very creation of the universe is not as

    great an achievement as this."

To let God work in us,

    1. we must deepen our heartknowledge (experience) ofthe richness of Baptism

    Our Identity & Self-Image

Our Actions flow from our self-image of ourselves.

If we see ourselves as good, wewill behave accordingly.

If we see ourselves as nothinggood, we behave accordingly.

Through the Sacrament ofBaptism, our Eternal Father hasmade us his children. We are not

just his creature he created butalso his child. We now share hisnature.

If we embrace this reality as ouridentity totally with the whole ofour being, then

No one who is a child of Godsins because God's seed remainsin him. Nor can he sin, becausehe is a child of God. (1 John 3:9)

[First large bead on the pendantof Rosary]

    See how much the Father

has loved us! His love is so

great that we are calledGod's children and so in

How do we make the reality thatwe are Gods children ouridentity?

The same way , God told theIsraelites to do.

One generation made the originalexodus out of Egypt. But every generation since had tocelebrate it as if they had done it

and that it done for them. TheExodus journey gave them theirIdentity as Gods chosen people.

    Baptism gives us ours.

In the following slides, wecompare the Rite of Baptism to

    the Exodus experience.

As we deepen our experience ofthe richness of our Baptism, wewill find ourselves living aschildren of God.

    "On the seventh day you

    must explain to your

children, 'I am celebratingwhat the LORD did for me

    when I left Egypt.

For Jews, the title of a book is thefirst few words of the book. Thus, the title of the book of Exodus, is

these are the names. This bookcontains the most Holy Name of

God (YAHWEH) and the story itsrevelations to Moses.

In the bible, names are not emptylabels but expressed who theperson is.

Question: Do you know themeaning of your name?

    These are the names(Exodus 1:1)

    Welcome from theCommunity

In the rite of Baptism, the Priestclaims the child for Christ bymaking the sign of the Cross. Thisalso makes the child part of Godscommunity.

In the burning bush incident, Godclaimed the Hebrews for his own.

All people belong to God. Bymaking this claim, God is settingthese people apart.

He did this for us as well.

Question: Do you feel especiallychosen by God?

    The LORD said, I have

indeed seen the misery ofmy people in Egypt

    (Exodus 3:7)

    The Liturgy of the Word

Once the welcome is done, the

liturgy of Word begins. It includesreadings, Gospel, sermon, prayersof the faithful, and the litany ofsaints.

Unlike other religions where manseeks to go to God. For us, God

comes to us and we respond.

Moses and Aaron did not gostraight to Pharaoh but insteadfirst went to the people and toldthem Gods message. And theyresponded.

    See CCC 142-143

Question:Do you seek Gods willand grace before you do things?

    Moses and Aaron brought

    together all the elders of

the Israelites.. and theybelieved they bowed down

    and worshiped.

    (Exodus 4:29-31)

    The Exorcism

In Baptism, a simple exorcism isperformed to remove the anyhold of Satan. This is theequivalent of God saying this onebelong to me and you have to noclaim.

This is seen in the Exodus, whenMoses and Aaron ask the Pharaohto release the people.

Question: Do you think and actin a selfish manner?

    Moses and Aaron went to

    Pharaoh and said, the

LORD, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go

    (Exodus 5:1)

    First Anointing with oil ofCatechumen

You can tell the devil to go away but he

    keeps coming back.

The Priest anoints the child with the oilof catechumen. Just as oil is used tomassage and strengthen. Similarly thisoil represents the grace to help theperson in a lifelong struggle againstsin.

Pharaoh made the lives of the Israelitesmiserable. But they held on with HOPEknowing that God will set them free.

If we struggle against temptation withHope in God (asking his help) knowingthat the temptation wont last long and

we can never be tempted beyond ourstrength, we can overcome thetemptation and not sin.(1 Peter 1:6; 1Cor 10:13)

Question: Do you struggle whentempted or do you just give in?

no longer supply straw formaking bricks; but require

    them to make the same

number of bricks as beforeMake the work harder for the

    people so that they keep

working and pay no attentionto lies. (Exodus 5:7-9)

    Blessing of the Water

The priest then blesses the water

used for Baptism and asks theHoly Spirit to come over it.

In Exodus, God clearly instructsMoses that firstplaguestartsthrough Aaron the priestlyfigure. The plague changes

    water into blood.

I believe that this emphasizes therole of priests in our lives. Notonly does God work directly buthe also used priests to work hiswonders in our lives.

Question: Do you love & honour(pray for, confide, help, askblessings from ) your priests?

    The LORD said to Moses,

    Tell Aaron, Take your staff

and stretch out your handover the waters of Egypt..

    (Exodus 7:19)

Renunciation of Sin and Professionof Faith

The ten plagues represents a battlebetween the God of Israel and thegods of Egypt. In our lives as well, wemust give up our idols and obey thetrue God.

By killing a lamb (Egyptian considereda lamb a God), it was deiticide whichwas punishable by death. On top of it,

the killing was not a hidden affair butpublicly advertised by putting blood onthe doorposts. This is giving permissionto the Egyptians to kill them.

The Hebrews betted their lives on theword of God. If Moses was lying tothem, they would be dead nextmorning.

Question: When you say yourenounce Satan and you believe inGod, do you believe the way they did?

Are you willing to gamble your lifefollowing Gods instructions?

Then they are to take some

of the blood and put it on

the sides and tops of thedoorframes of the houses

    where they eat the lambs.

    Baptism with water

This is the essential rite ofBaptism. You go through thewater. Death to sin and new Lifein Christ.

Pharaoh and his men died in theseas while the Israelites escapedinto the desert.

Question: Have you died toselfishness and living a Christ-

    centred life?

    The waters were divided,

    and the Israelites went

through the sea on dryground, with a wall of water

on their right and on their

    left. (Exodus 14:21-22)

    Anointing with Sacred Chrism

Oil is also used for anointing Kings and

    Priests.

On Pentecost, Jews celebrated thegiving of the Law to Moses at Sinai. OnPentecost, Christians celebrate the Lawof Love the Holy Spirit.

    Sacred Chrism represents the Holy

Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not come toremain idle but that we may share inthe priestly prophetic and kinglymission of Christ. (See 1 Peter 2:9)

Participating in this mission is the greatadventure.

ReadLumen Gentium paragraph 34-36for details on Priest, Prophet & King.

Question: Are you actively living thisthreefold mission?

you will be for me a

    kingdom of priests and a

    holy nation (Exodus 19:6)

    Clothing with White Garment

At this point the child is clothedwith a white garment

representing that the child is risenwith Christ. The garment alsorepresents the Christian dignity. The parents are told to help thechild bring this dignity unstainedinto the everlasting life.

During the exodus, the clothesnever wore out. But they couldhave got dirty. Washing thenwould definitely be needed.

Our sins stain our dignity. Regularconfession cleanses us andrestores us to the dignity of thechild of God.

Question: Are you proactivelypreventing sin? when fallen in sin,are you quickly reconciling withGod and others?

    During the forty years that

    I led you through the

wilderness, your clothesdid not wear out, nor did

    the sandals on your feet.

    Presenting the Light of Christ

A candle is lighted from the Paschal

candle and given to the parents tocarry on behalf of the child torepresent that the child is enlightenedby Christ.

The desert is a hostile environment. The pillar of cloud covered the sun andmake the desert hospitable during theday. The pillar of fire kept the chill andwild animals away during the night.

We make thousands of judgementsevery day saying , this is good, thisis bad based the pleasure / pain weget. When we are enlightened byChrist, we evaluate things through theeyes of Christ and see how God loves

us through the events and persons inour lives. This makes this life

    hospitable.

Question: Do you give thanks in allcircumstances (1 Thess 5:18)?

    By day the LORD went

ahead of them in a pillar of

    cloud to guide them on

their way and by night in apillar of fire to give them

    light, so that they could

    1. See with Faith

If in all situations, you turn to

God and put the focus on Him.He will grow dominant in yourlife. If you focus on the problem, the problem will grow dominant.

All who look to him will be radiant(Ps 34:5)

Since, then, you have been raisedwith Christ, set your hearts onthings above, where Christ is,seated at the right hand of God.Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians

    2. Listen with Hope

You keep him in perfect peace whosemind is stayed on you, because hetrusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

When we focus on God, we are atpeace. We are calm enough to thinkclearly. We can ask and receive thegrace in the present to do whatneeds to be done. There is no rush, avoidance or anxiety.

"Do not try to have your strugglestaken away, rather ask for the grace tocarry them well." St. Brother AndrBessette

Isaiah 30: 15-18 In repentance(returning to me) and rest (waiting forme) you will be saved. In quietnessand confidence is your strength but

you would not listen .. (read the restof the passage to find out whathappens if you dont )

[EXAMPLE OF MARY]She pondered all this in her heart(Luke 2:19,51)

    3. Speak with Love

Focus on God calms us. Being stillenergizes us and gives us control. Allthis is so that we direct the energyaway from our inclinations and

addictions and into fulfilment of ourduties and works of mercy. Withoutthe inner calm, it is difficult to becharitable or loving.

The energy must be used . It cannotbe destroyed, only transformed orredirected. (Science:The First Law ofThermodynamics)

Idleness gives rise to unnecessarytemptations. For example, when theenergetic King David stayed homeinstead of going to war (see 2 Samuel11:1), he succumbed to temptation.

Direct the energy using your thoughts,

    then words, then with actions.

[EXAMPLE OF MARY]Mary hurried to Zechariahs house.(Luke1:39)They have no wine (John 2:3)Standing close to the cross was hismother (John 19:27)

    Although ships are so large

they are steered by a very

    Where is the destination?

Apart from Self-Knowledge (Realizingwho we are Child of God) andfulfilling the responsibility of thepresent (See+Listen+Speak), we mustknow the direction to our destination.

We move from being isolated throughselfishness to communion.

communion represents both the sourceand the fruit of mission: communiongives rise to mission and mission isaccomplished in communion. (CL 32)

Called to CommunionLike a hand or a ear in a body, wediscover our vocation and mission onlyin a community. Our unity is atestimony of Gods love working in us.

How good and pleasant it is whenbrothers live together in unity! (Psalm133:1)

Union with Christ is also union with allthose to whom he gives himself. Icannot possess Christ just for myself; Ican belong to him only in union with all

those who have become, or who willbecome, his own. Communion drawsme out of myself towards him, andthus also towards unity with allChristians. We become one body, completely joined in a single existence.

Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est(14)

    [Glory be Bead]

[EXAMPLE OF MARY]They gathered as a grouptogether with Mary the mother ofJesus (Acts 1:14)

I have given them the glory you

gave me, so that they may be one,

as we are one, I in them and you in

me, that they may be brought to

perfection as one, that the worldmay know that you sent me, and

that you loved them even as you

    loved me.(John 17: 22-23)

To be perfect in our vocation isnothing else than to fulfil the

duties which our state of lifeobliges us to perform, and toaccomplish them well, and onlyfor the honour and love of God

    We grow little by little.

We will not be able to conquer allour problems with one step.

But let us take it one step at a

    time.

The secret is in patience. Not idlewaiting but daily living our faith inevery circumstance.

    Through patience, we will

    possess our souls- Luke 21:19

    The LORD your God will

drive out those nationsbefore you, little by little.

You will not be allowed toeliminate them all at once,

    or the wild animals will
