Coverage. The second cycle of the Health ExaminationSurvey“wasconductedon a na~ionwideprobabilitysample of 7,417 children from the noninstitu-tionalizcdpopulationof the United States, excludingHawaii and Alaska,aged 6-11. The survey started in July 1963 and was completed in December1965. Out of the 7,417 children selected for the sample, 7,119 (96 percent)were examined. This national sample is representativeof the roughly 24million childrenin the population at that time.
Data Collection. Informationwas obtained for each examined child by meansof detailed st~ucturedquestionnairesfor medical and developmentalhistoriesfrom a householdadult, usually the mother; a school questionnaire;medical,dental and psychologicalexaminations;vision and hearing tests; andanthropometric measurements.
Data Compilation. The major data elements obtainedand derived from thissurvey have been compiled into one IntegratedData Tape (IDT) file which isavailable for release.
