Open Day At TallaghtGarda Station

On Saturday September 7, anOpen Day was held at TallaghtGarda Station. According to Sergeant Margo Kennedy, theopen day was organised to promote better relations betweenthe people of Tallaght from all different ethnic backgrounds andtheir local Gardaí. This was thefirst time that such an Open Daytook place at Tallaght and itproved be a very successful event. It strengthened existing relation-ships within the community whilealso enhancing new relationships.

Tallaght Superintendent PeterDuff said “The day went reallywell and we were delighted tosee so many people visiting thestation”.

“The Garda Station belongs tothe community, it is a Statebuilding being paid for by taxes– so we felt that it was a niceidea for people to be given thechance to what goes on in theirGarda Station. It also allowed thecommunity to meet with localGardaí, learn about what we doand gather information.”

News 8A Tallaght doctor hascalled on local peopleto get behind a newhealth campaign aiming to collect onemillion signatures on a petition.

Dr Andy Jordan, a local practi-tioner from Aylesbury, is chair-man of the National Associationof General Practitioners (NAGP)who recently launched a nation-wide campaign entitled GeneralPractice in Crisis.

The campaign is being rolled outnationally over the comingweeks. Dr Jordan, who is alsoacting as a spokesperson for thecampaign, said he was moved to get involved as he fearedcommunity-based GP serviceswere at risk due to “savage cuts”by the Government.

“We have seen draconian cutsthat reduce our ability to treat

patients,” said Dr Jordan. “Overthe past three years, €160 million has been taken fromgeneral practice. This equates toan average of 33% of funding to some of the poorest in our society. Community-based GPservices are now at risk due tothe latest round of savage cutsunder the Financial EmergencyMeasures in the Public InterestAct 2009 (FEMPI.)”

“We need one million signatureson the petition,” Dr Jordanadded. “That would send out areal signal that we need to takethis issue seriously. This is notabout the patient versus thedoctor, this is about the patienttaking on the politicians.”

Members of the associationclaim the department’s currentstrategy will have an enormousimpact on general practice, withlonger waiting lists, no home vis-its and changes in fee structures.

Anthony told us “The best part ofthe event was that two days later, Iwas cycling past the pitch where wehad played and saw a group ofboys playing bulldog on the samesite - the game has been reborn inTallaght!”

Anthony also led several walksaround the town that look at 'alternative culture' of Tallaght thatlooked at other examples of culture, aside from the usual 'here's a bit ofart' or 'this is a public sculpture'. An-thony said “I was interested in otherways the people of Tallaght expressthemselves - culture, after all, is theamassed knowledge and expres-sions of a people - if we think aboutit that way, the culture of Tallaghtcan be viewed very differently thanjust 'art' - graffiti is also a form ofexpression, as are the stories we tell, the way we sit on the grass anddrink beer, the way we throw rubbish on the street.”

Anthony held "social-space" projectsat Rua Red which invited people tosit and have a coffee and discuss thehistory and myths and perceptionsin more conversational way.

There were also the more "tradi-tional" talks and walks that were ledby members of the Tallaght Histor-ical society - most notably by theenthusiastic Tomas Maher and SeanBagnall - these looked at the factualhistory of Tallaght.

The project culminated on SaturdaySeptember 16 with a Gatheringevent which offered the shared opportunity to build a cardboardhouse that was representative of allof Tallaght and a public discussioncalled What, Public Art In Tallaghtwhich was a public debate abouthow we think about art in Tallaght, what it does and what it can do.

Things Will Change

Anthony Schrag was born in Zim-babwe and grew up in the MiddleEast, the UK and Canada. Originally,he obtained a degree in CreativeWriting in Vancouver, as well asPhotography and Sculpture atEmily Carr, and completed the MFAcourse at the Glasgow School of Artin 2005. He is (mostly) based in Scot-land but was recently invited to Tal-laght by Rua Red to develop acommunity-based project.

“For me, art is about sharing ideasand trying to see the world we live

in slightly differently - assuch, I got really interested

in how we view Tallaght - the sto-ries, the history, the perceptions of it- and wanted to find ways to exploresome of those ideas with the citizensof Tallaght.”

Anthony devised a series of "talks, walks, presentations and such!" whichincluded historical talks, alternativecultural walking tours, lectures, andpublic events which, as a whole, looked at how the old stories mergedwith the new Tallaght. The title for thisproject has been Things Will Change.”

The Zombie Flash Mob, which tookplace on August 31, was about themyth of the Parthelonians, whosupposedly came to Tallaght in2379 BC (over 4000 years ago) andsupposedly all died in a plague inone week. Anthony said he was in-terested in how that myth mergedwith the new buildings of TallaghtCross, which, with its vacant andempty abandoned buildings “lookspretty much like something out ofa post-apocolyptic movie anyway!”

Anthony also wanted to try to cre-ate new stories for Tallaght and ex-plored some of the ancient gamesthat are not played anymore - oneof those was Bulldog, and he cre-ated an event which attempted to

break the world record forthe Largest Game of Bull-dog. The idea was to rean-

imate the forgotten games andcreate a new myth for the town.Mayor Looney agreed to be the first'bulldog' which was sort of repre-sentative of gathering the wholetown up together.

The event, which was a bit of awash out due to the rain, had alarge turn out considering it was sowet, but they did actually manageto set a world record!

Mayor Looney establishes new fund

Mayor Dermot Looney has sur-rendered €7,000 of the €45,000Mayoral allowance that he is en-titled to, with Deputy MayorEamon Tuffy giving €3,000 of hisallowance to create a new€10,000 fund. They fund will beopen to community organisa-tions working in the area ofyouth and sport, older people

and the environment, three ofthe issues which the Mayor hadoutlined as priorities his year as Mayor.

Dermot explains “The most important reason for doing thisis to allow our local communityorganisations and clubs to applyfor the kind of small grants (€250or €500) which can make all the difference in their day-to-day activities or events. But I wantedto make a political point by taking a pay cut too.”

This cut runs in tandem with thedecision of Mayor Looney and13 others on South DublinCounty Council to refuse ex-penses for conferences at homeand abroad. Such savings werediverted into providing homelessaccommodation in the county.

Shane Jennings 14he is quite similar to Joe in his emphasis on technical ability anddefence. It's pretty exciting to bearound and keeps everyone ontheir toes. We have to make a goodstart this year because the last fewyears we haven't started great, forwhatever reason, we've got to giveMatt as much help as possible.

Is it true that because of your contacts withLeicester Tigers the Leinster managementasked you to get info on the new coach? Well they went down many different avenues of research butyes I did ask some of the people Iknew at the club about him andthey all spoke very highly of Mattand his abilities as a coach.

The management had already metwith him and were very impressed,I think they just wanted another bitof info and Leo and myself wereable to make a few enquiries. Buthe's proved himself with his recordat the Brumbies and Leicester, bothvery high-pressure environmentswith big expectations. To have hadfour and five years working atthose places is impressive.

Having lost Johnny Sexton and Isa Nacewaare you happy with theplayers that Leinster havebrought in this summer? Yes I am, obviously the two ladshave played a huge part in our success in the recent years. Theplayers we've brought in are allvery good. I know Mike (McCarthy)well from having played against a few times recently and he has always impressed me. Jimmy(Goppearth) has settled in well

It's fair to say Jennings really announced himself in the 2006/07season by helping Leicester Tigerschallenge for three titles in Englandand Europe.

Playing at the top of his game, theDubliner, who was runner-up forthe Guinness Premiership Player ofthe Year award, was destined to becalled up for duty for Ireland’s 2007summer tour to Argentina duringwhich he gained his first cap. Unfor-tunately an injury ruled him out ofcontention for the Rugby World Cup.

In 2007 he rejoined Leinster, wherehe had made his debut againstSwansea in 2001. He had signedfor the Tigers in 2005 after an impressive run with Leinster, whichsaw him operate as a stand-in captain.

We discussed his career to date, Leinster's new coach and the up-coming Heineken Cup campaign, which sees the team in the so-called “Group Of Death.”

How has preseason training been? It's been great, everything's gone really well, there's a great atmos-phere. Some aspects of it are thesame as other years, things like thestrength and conditioning trainingdon't change but obviously thisyear with us having a new coachand backroom staff we've beenworking on new ways of playing, new patterns of play.

Preseason is great for a rugbyplayer because we only work Monday to Friday so we have the

weekends free, like most otherpeople! There are huge physicalbenefits to it as in you get leanerand your body isn't having to recover from taking knocks everyweek plus you put in the hard fitnesswork that you're going to need forthe season. I personally like it. I'vehad a great summer, I got married, and had a great holiday.

How has new coach MattO Connor settled in? I've been very impressed with him;he has a different way of playingcompared to Joe and Checks, somedifferent strategies. The playershave had to get used to new calls, some new systems, but everyoneis working hard and learning, theycan see what he's trying to do andeveryone is buying into it. Actually

The Leinster rugby team is currently going through something of agolden age. Three Heineken Cups, One League title and an Amlin Cup in recent years has seen the team overtake deadly rivals Munster as top dogs in Ireland.

One man who has played a vital part in the success during this spell is Shane Jennings. An excellentflanker and warrior for the cause, he has been nothing short of a credit to the jersey.

THE HEINEKEN CUP IS ALWAYS SO COMPETITIVE, GETTING OUT OF THE POOL IS ALMOST AS GOOD AS WINNING IT.

and of course Zane (Kirchner) ison the way, I don't know whenhe is actually joining up with usbut I'm really looking forward tohaving him as part of the set up.

As well as this we also have thelads from the Academy comingthrough who are all really goodplayers as well. Jack McGrath hascome on so much in the last twoyears, as have Ben Marshall andJordi Murphy. Dan Levy, who I'veplayed alongside is another one,it's great for the team as there'sgood competition for places.

Those younger lads are afterplaces and us older lads don'twant to give up our places tothem, it's a changing environ-ment. Likewise when it comes totrophies, I don't want to see anyother teams lifting trophies. We've got to have that desire.

How did your greatlove of rugby begin? Through my brothers and mydad I suppose. I have two olderbrothers who played it so I wasfollowing them really. Anythingthey did I wanted to do! When Istarted out in St Colmcille's inKnocklyon there wasn't reallymuch rugby in the school.

I played Gaelic football there butI wasn't very good! I played minirugby in the community gamesfor Colmcille's but it wasn't untilI got to St Mary's that I got toplay at a high level and pro-gressed through the schoolteams. Mary’s is a very rugby fo-cused school, so I played in theirjunior and senior side and thenhad ambitions to play for Irelandschools and Leinster schools, which happened.

I'd go to a lot of Ireland gameswhile I was in Mary's, stand in theold schoolboy section.

Who were your favouriteplayers when you were young? Zinzane Brooke, Jean-Baptiste Lafond, Laurent Cabannes. I usedto really like the French team whenI was young.

Who has been thebiggest influence on your career? I suppose my brothers and my dadwere a huge influence but asidefrom them I'd say it was one of myteachers in St Mary's, RichieHughes. He was my Under 13coach and he was a massive influence, not just on me but all thelads in the school.

He was a great guy and a wonder-ful dedicated coach; he'd even doextra work in the summer with us.

Has the game changedmuch since you turnedprofessional? Yes it has, the speed and physicalityhas increased a lot. It's always beena tough game but it's even toughernow! The size of the younger guyscoming through is very impressive;they're pretty developed at ayounger age. They're ahead of thecurve compared to the young players when I was coming throughmyself. They have a great appreci-ation for the game.

In 2005 you left Leinsterfor a two-year spell withLeicester Tigers, did youenjoy playing in England?

17Yes it was a very positive experiencefor me. At the time it was hard toleave Leinster but there wasn't thesame calibre of coaches and play-ers as there is now and I thoughtthe move to Leicester would be agreat learning experience for me,which it was.

I had two great years there, it wasan unbelievable place, they had agreat coach, Pat Howard, and greatplayers, they were really good tome. We had some success and I gotto play regularly. When I came backto Leinster in 2007 I really under-stood what the standard was, I hada greater understanding of whathad to be done in order to reachthe top.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?Winning my first international capagainst New Zealand in 2007 is onethat sticks out. Also winning thefirst Heineken Cup with Leinster in2009 was pretty amazing, it was agreat season actually. The semi finalagainst Munster was a very big winfor us as, a lot of people had writtenus off before that game after whathad happened in the previous semiagainst them.

Since winning your firstcap you've only played 13 times for Ireland, doyou feel that you didn'tget a fair crack of thewhip off Declan Kidney?I don't know, some coaches don't likecertain players, that's just the way itis. I had no idea how he felt towardsme, he never told me. He had me insquads though, which is something Ialways like, to be involved with the in-ternational set up is great.

Will the fact that JoeSchmidt is now the Ireland coach increaseyour chances of playingfor the national side? You don't know, Joe will have opin-ions on all the players. Everyone'son a clean slate now. I have as gooda chance as anyone, I'll just have tosee how things develop.

Who has been yourtoughest opponent so far?Martyn Williams. He wasn't thebiggest of players but he was always cute, you'd need eyes in theback of your head when you wereplaying against him! He was anoutstanding player though; youdon't get to play over 100 times forWales if you're not. Off the pitchhe's a good guy.

Would it be fair to saythat Leinster have ended up a very hardpool in the Heineken Cup this year? Yes it is! The old “Group Of Death!”It's always the group of death everyyear if you ask me, it's bizarre!Going away to France is always sotough, this year we'll have to goand play the defending championswhich is going to be great.

We know a lot about the Ospreysand what a good side they are afterplaying them so much in the lastfew years.

The Heineken Cup is always socompetitive, getting out of the poolis almost as good as winning it! Wehave to concentrate on gettinggood momentum early on. It's allvery exciting, I'm really looking for-ward to it.

the international players as well. Weneed the whole province behind us,as this is where the players willcome from in the future, we needall feeders.

Finally Shane, you are involved with the charityRonald McDonaldHouse, would you like totell our readers about it?The House provides accommoda-tion and a caring and supportiveenvironment for families from allover the country who must stay inDublin for extended periods whiletheir children are ill and undergo-ing treatment in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Ronald McDonald House is an im-portant resource for parents whoare caring for children who areseriously ill. Having to beout of home for longperiods of time to beclose to their childrencan cause major stressemotionally and finan-cially, this is where

18What is your opinion onthe new scrum laws thatare coming in?We get new rules changes happen-ing every year so you get used toit. This new scrum thing is a goodidea. Instead of the “crouch, touch, set” sequence from last season thepacks are required to bind in advance and they're not allowedpush until the ball is in. It'll take thepressing out and make it safer.Anything to make the game saferis fine by me! Hopefully we'll seeless impact injuries because of this change.

Do you have any plansmade for when you retire from rugby? Not really no, I haven't thought toomuch about it to be honest withyou. I'm back studying again. Idon't know if I would like to get intocoaching when I'm finished, maybesome area of business. You don'treally know what can happen. At the moment all my focus is onplaying.

Have Leinster any plansto bring in some signings?I have no idea. My job is just to playrugby and not pick players! As Iwas saying earlier we have greatcompetition for places now and agreat coach in Matt in charge andour academy is producing the play-ers we need so there's a lot offaith in the squad we have.

What advice would yougive to young rugbyplayers starting out intheir careers? If you enjoy playing the game atthat age and if you're willing tolearn as much as possible, thenmake the most of any advice youget from your coaches and educateyourself about the game.

Would you agree that Leinster has now changedfrom being just a southDublin type thing to more of a province wideexperience?I don't think it ever was just a southDublin sport in Leinster. It's greatnow because the interest is defi-nitely growing around the province,we see this for ourselves when wevisit for training camps etc.

The make up of the team is a greatmix of players from all over Leinster,Carlow, Louth, not just Dublin, with

Could you tell our readersa bit about the back-ground of the band?David: Three of us were in anotherband for a long time and it hadgone stale. We’re trying to moveaway from the old. After a long period of time we realised we justneeded something fresh. We had achange of band members, Briancame in which gave us a nice injec-tion of energy. We started writingnew songs and the songs weresounding really different, muchmore energetic, and much brighter.

We were a darker band before, a bitmore introverted. When Briancame along he brightened thingsup, we were happy again to bewriting and playing. We had beenat a point where we were thinkingof giving up but then we reallystarted enjoying it again.

You release your self titled debut album this month? We had started writing a couple ofsongs and just thought let’s do analbum. We have a record companyin the States who funded it and werecorded in Brooklyn, we’re ab-solutely delighted with it. It hap-pened so fast that we were reallyexcited to hear the record; it waslike a third party record! It’s a debutrecord for us and we’re excitedabout our new start as that’s whatthis is for us. We are having thealbum launch on September 28 inGrand Social so anyone reading thisplease feel free to come along, you’re more than welcome! Neil: We’ve had a few singles offthe album out already. The first wasin April called True Believer and thesecond came out in June calledThere is a Light. Both singles are onYou Tube. We did an EP at the end

of July and now we’re all set for thealbum. We’re so excited; there areso many good bands out therethese days it’s harder to get noticed. The best thing to do is stick on thealbum in your car and come andsee us in a show and you’ll hearwhat we’re about.David: We’ve never had a showthat was this entertaining or ener-getic; I think that’s what this albumgives us. We just want people tohear the record and at least give itone chance. If they don’t like it fairenough but at least listen to it.

How would you describeyour sound?Neil: We’re an electronic rockband, we use a lot of keyboards andloops but it’s still very much basedaround drums, bass, guitar with vocals and harmonies. Crosby Stillsand Nash meets Bjork!

Who wrote most of thealbum or do you all share the writing? All: Yeah, we all do the writing. Neil: Someone might come in witha bit of an idea and then we’ll allget together in a room and…change everything!David: I think the best songs comefrom where everyone has the free-dom of doing whatever they want.

Who are your influences?Brian: I think the way that musichas gone now there’s so muchavailable, it’s probably hard to pininfluences down to a couple ofbands. Like Neil was saying there’sa ton of vocals and harmonies sobands like Crowded House, ArcadeFire I suppose.Neil: We’d also listen to a lot ofBruce Springsteen or U2 and Wilco.

What do you think of thecurrent Irish music scene?Alan: There are some great bandshere at the moment, everyone’s ina band now! Remember years agoit was kind of a big thing “Oh mycousin’s friend is in a band, he playsthe guitar,” “Oh really! Wow!”Whereas now it’s like “I know thisguy who’s not in a band!”David: I think there are some bril-liant bands here as well but tosome degree they’re getting lost, the way everything is being madeso instant now. It’s not necessarilythe best bands who are coming tothe top, it’s the bands who are bestat Tweeting, Facebooking and YouTube-ing, which is a bit unfortu-nate. I suppose the flip side to thisis that all those things are availableto them and they can market them-selves to a certain degree.

Empire Circus 20INTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

Empire Circus is a four piece alternative rock band from Tallaght who have just released a self-titled debut album.

They have drawn comparisons with Arcade Fire and Two Door Cinema Club yet retain their own musicalidentity. Previously known as “Stand” they have been together since 1994 and spent seven years livingand working in the US before returning home in 2008. They consist of Neil Eurelle (Vocals), David Walsh(Bass) Alan Doyle (Guitar) and Brian Ellis (Drums.) InTallaght Magazine met them to find out more.

Empire Circus 22they’re doing. Foals as well, wouldn’t mind doing a show withU2 either!Alan: I’d be terrified we’d turn upand they’d be horrible, never meetyour idols eh?! A U2 gig would betoo f*****g big anyway!

What’s the meaning behind the name ?

How would you describeone of your live shows?Alan: Energetic, loud, quite vocalheavy and interactive. I’d like tothink that the majority of peoplewho end up in a room where we’replaying will leave there happy andwant to see us again.

Some of our readers mayknow you guys from thelocal music school yourun, Pure Music. Are you all involved in it?David: Yes we are. We started theschool in 2008 because we wantedto do something when we weren’tdoing doing band stuff. A few of usused to teach when we lived inNew York and we loved it so whenwe came back we just decided togo for it. It means we’re still in-volved with music; it’s what we’regood at, it’s what we love. I hadgot lessons when I was a kidand most of them were soboring it took all the good-ness out of it! We try to getthe kids into the practicalside of things, making it in-teresting for them. We tryto show them why we lovemusic.

Is there anyone youwould all love to play with?David: The National or Bon Iver, they look and sound likeproper bands, unlike most of themnowadays. Neil: Arcade Fire, I like the waythey are who they are and theystick to that. Everything seems tobe quite real with them; music fansreally appreciate a band when theyfeel it’s something tangible, I knowI admire that.Brian: Band of Horses, I love what

Neil: We were just trying to findtwo words that were powerful. Wehad lived in New York and recordedthe album in Brooklyn so we took the“Empire” out of Empire State as a nodto that. And the “Circus” comes fromthe fact that we want people to havefun, be happy and there are elementsof theatre in our shows.

Finally lads, did growingup in Tallaght influenceyour music in any way?David: Yeah we learned that we’dlike to get out of Tallaght! No I’monly joking. I suppose though whenyou are from a working class area, all joking aside, you do want what’sdifferent, you do want to moveaway. I think that’s why we movedto America because it’s different.People were asking why didn’t wemove to the UK but we just felt itwas too much like home. Alan: We always swim against thetide, when people are leaving wecome back! There are references insome of our songs to the generalsh*t state of our country but not

Tallaght.

Their album launchparty will take place inGrand Social on Sep-

tember 28. It is availableto buy on iTunes, Google

Play, Amazon & Spotifyfrom September 12.

THE ALBUM IS NOW ALSO EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLEFROM PLAY ON LEVEL 3 OF THE SQUARE TALLAGHT.

First things first Seana, tell us all about the playThe Bruising of Clouds. It's basically a three hander, withmyself and two other actors IanLloyd and Ryan Andrews. It's aDublin love story, my characterKelly initially starts going out withone of the lads. It's about an un-likely couple falling into each other, falling over each other and tryingto help each other back up. The rehearsals have been going greatand it's wonderful to be getting to work with Fishamble the production company.

How did you get the part?It was just simply Jim (Culleton director) had seen me in Dollhouse,he contacted my agent Maureenand asked her would I be interestedin doing it.It's my first time doingbig theatre.

How did you get the partin Dollhouse?I was going to weekly dramaclasses in Clondalkin with my agentMaureen V Ward of Talented Kids& MVW Talent Agency. Maureentold us to prepare monologues asNick McGinley the casting directorwas going to sit in on our class.

I ended up messing up my mono-logue and decided to get back upafter a few others had done theirs.Nick though called me aside andasked me to do some improv withJohnny Ward who played Eanna inthe film. I didn't think I did great, Ithink I'd be cringing if I saw it now!Nick asked me some questions oncamera and then sent it off toKirsten (Sheridan, director) andMaureen (Hughes).

After that the casting was strangeas we didn't use a script. It was along audition process. When I first

met Kirsten, we went for a fewlunches and she asked me loads ofquestions about myself, and I waswondering when I was going to getto audition. I didn't realise that thiswas all part of the process, I didn'tknow what was going on! The weekbefore the cast were due to go toBrittas Bay to do a week of prepwork I found out I had the part ofJeannie.

What was the experienceof making the movie like?It was amazing, we got to go awayand live together for a week in Brittas before filming started to getto know each other, which wascrazy! We just slotted in together,we were a very close bunch of people. It was brilliant craic! Butthere was method in the madnessas it made everything more lucid. The crew said they'd never been ona set that was so laid back before.

It was great for me, ignorance isbliss as it was my first time doing afilm so I didn't really know what toexpect and I had no script, whichmade it easier. The fact we knewnothing about the plot or what wasto come next was very difficult. Youjust had to forget about it. Somescenes were particularly challeng-ing, we weren't given time to pre-pare and just had to throwourselves into every scene.

You got great reviews for your performance in that movie, how didyou feel when you gotnominated for the IFTAfor Best Actress? It was mad, I woke up one morningto see all these text messages fromall the cast and I was just soshocked! It was the icing on a giantcake. I genuinely wasn't disap-pointed not to win it as I didn't evenexpect to be nominated. To evenget the part in the film was great,as not many people get to act insomething so experimental. Afterthe film came out we had such anamazing time because we got toplaces like Berlin, Prague, Ukraineand Hungary, I was so very lucky.

Which do you preferdoing stage or screen?I know this may sound clichéd butI'll do wherever the good work is.I've probably got a little bit moreexperience of film. I can't really saywhich I have a preference for. I justlove being on set and rehearsingfor a project. I love the first readingof the script and how the characterfirst appears to you and then youget under their skin. I enjoy watch-ing and learning what makes peo-ple tick and questioning why is thatcharacter the way they are?

Seána Kerslake 24INTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

Seána Kerslake is a 22 year old actress from Tymonville.

Last year she appeared in the movie Dollhouse, for which she received an IFTA nomination for BestActress. Who has been the biggestinfluence on your career? My parents because they have sup-ported me and allowed me to takethis as my job. They also supportedme to go to college and get a degree, they are definitely the biggest influenceon my career. Acting wise it would beKirsten, Kate, I've been lucky to havebeen surrounded by such good peo-ple. There's not really been any oneactor or actress I have been influencedby. I love Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Shirley Temple.

What are your plans forthe next few months? After Bruising Of Clouds I'm doinga film with Emmet Kirwin calledSkirting Pebbles. Then I'm doing acourse in the Factory for the yearwhich I'm really looking forward toas it means I can work and study. Ithelps to keep me focused!

Finally Seána are youlooking forward to performing in your home town next month?Yes I am, it'll be mad. When itcomes closer to the time when weare opening in Tallaght it'll hit me!It's mad seeing the poster outsidethe Civic. It was weird seeing my-self in posters for Dollhouse aswell. There was a giant sticker ofme on the ground at the cinemain the Square in Tallaght, and myfriends would send me pictures ofthemselves sitting down beside myhead! There should be plenty offamily and friends there, hopefullythere'll be no heckling from them!

My name is Laura O’Dowd and I am theClubs and Societies Officer of IT TallaghtStudent Union. This is a part time role whichmeans I study for my degree while fulfillingmy duties for the Student Union. I am inthird year studying Advertising and Marketing Communications and have hada vital role in the running of the drama society since my first year. As clubs and societies officer my job is to offer supportto the students who run the clubs and societies within the college.

Getting involved in clubs and societies is animportant part of college life and there iscurrently a wide range of clubs and societiesavailable to all full time students of IT Tallaght. Getting involved really helps to enhance the student experience and Iwould strongly encourage all students, especially first years to join at least one clubor society this year. You will not regret it.Joining a club or society is a great way tomeet people outside of the classroom andmeet people with similar interests to you.Clubs and societies provide students theopportunity to learn a new skill and pick upa new hobby very easily and involventmentis a great combat of the stress of collegework and study. an even balance betweenstudying and socialising is very importantin my opinion and sometimes it is nice tohave a welcoming distraction.

With over 30 clubs and societies availableto students, there really is something foreveryone. These clubs and societies havedone brilliantly at regional and national levels. Last year the Drama Society ran asold out performance of ‘Cash on Delivery’in the Civic Theatre and placed second inthe category of Best Event at the nationalBICS Awards. The radio society ran their annual Radio Weeks and raised over €1000for Arc Cancer Research. On the sports sideof things the GAA Club, Hockey Club andRugby Club all reached league finals withthe Rugby Club winning their leage finalover Carlow IT.

The list of Clubs and Societies available isever growing, with a new Music Society already in the process of setting up. It is soeasy to set up your own club or society andi am here to offer any support that studentsneed to develop any new clubs or societiesthat are being set up.

If you’re interested in getting involved andjoining a club or society sign up days arehappening on the 24th and 25th of September. I strongly encourage you to joinat least one!

Director Brad Andersonhad a tough task in turning a movie about a 911 call centre into an action packed thriller.

He enrolled the help of Academyaward winning actress Halle Berryto take on the leading role.

The movie gathers speed almostthe instant it begins. As we theviewer become accustomed to therunnings of an emergency 911centre we are introduced to JordanTurner played by Berry.

Jordan is a well liked member ofthe LAPD call centre and it is clearfrom the get go she is one of thebest at her job, she deals withemergency after emergency almosteffortlessly. That is until she receives a distressing call from Leah

Tempelton, a young girl homealone and frightened about an intruder trying to break into herhome. The next hour of the film is full ofheart pounding moments whichwill not only have you glued to yourseat but also covering your eyes. This movie was made for thetagline thriller.

The pacing of this film is excellentand there will certainly be no toiletbreaks. This movie moves so fastyou can’t afford to miss five minutes.

Once we find out who the kidnap-per is the plot of the whole movieunravels but it’s the ending that isreally something special and some-thing I certainly didn’t see coming.

I personally rate this movie ex-tremely highly but would warnagainst viewing the official trailer as it

tells almost the entire movie with ex-ceptions of the fantastic ending scene.

It is no surprise that Berry has al-ready been nominated for twoawards for her role as Jordan. Shewas nominated for Best Actress forthe Black Entertainment TelevisionAwards. She was also nominatedfor Choice Movie Actress in aDrama at the Teen ChoiceAwards.

The story of Steve Jobs'sascension from collegedropout into one of themost revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century.

To be honest Jobs’s story has beenso well documented over the pastfew years that you would think we’dalready know all there is to knowabout it, but that doesn’t take awayfrom how good a story it actually is.

Ashton Kutcher plays the lead role, and bears a remarkable resem-blance to a young Jobs. He alsoseems to have his physicality downto a tee.

The film begins with the unveilingon the iPod back in 2001 and thenquickly heads back into the collegeyears of Jobs and his first foray into

the world of computers before hiseventual getting chucked fromApple and re-instating as the mes-siah of the electronics world.

What will surprise most about thismovie will be how Steve Jobs’s welldocumented illness and subse-quent death is completely ignored.

The trailer pretty much sums up thestory from start to finish but I dolook forward to seeing how themovie on a whole plays out and Ihope Stern has not blown hischance to deliver a life story of aman who inspired so many.

Jobs was chosen to close the 2013Sundance Film Festival back in Jan-uary, and went on general releasein America in August. There is nooffical Irish release date as yet butone is expected soon.

Music

EMPIRE CIRCUSEmpire CircusBy Linn Heldal

THE HOTSPROCKETSComin OnBy Padraig Conlon

40

Empire Circus’ self-titleddebut album was releasedthis month by the management and recordlabel Paper Scissors Rock.

The Dublin based Indie Pop Rock four-piece may seem to have appeared out ofthe blue, but in reality they have been living together in the US for 7 years, recording and playing music full time.

The lads returned to Dublin in 2008, andthey spent the spring and summer of2012 writing and creating the music thatresulted in the 12 tracks of the album. It was recorded under the supervision ofProducer Bryce Goggin, who is famousfor producing big names, such as the Ramones.

Their sound focuses on the thrill ofrhythm and melody and the album has ahint of electro feel to it. The mix betweenelectronic futuristic sounds and the traditional sounds of the guitar, bass anddrums makes it very interesting and fresh.

The album hits its stride already at tracktwo, with the debut single True Believer. As the title promises it’s a positive, yet emotional tune, with great hit potential, which sets the standard for therest of the album.

The time spent in the US has clearly affected theirsound. There are many elements of mainstreamAmerican Pop Rock to be heard. This comes forwardin A Day In The Life Of A Super Hero, a transatlantictune with instantly catchy lyrics and melody. I thinkthere is a high possibility that this up-tempo tunewill be making radio waves very soon. The Americanpop formula can also be heard in Planting Seedsand in the catchy guitar hook of All I Need.

There Is A Light, which was also released as a single, is my favorite track of the album. The bal-ance between the ballad tinged piano and electrosound makes it very catchy and it’s a strong intro-duction to the album. The beautiful lyrics in theballad Sails Set For The Sky makes singer Neil Eu-rell’s vocals stand out. The last track, In Dreams, has a bit of a Little Green Cars vibe with its pow-erful chorus, the harmonies and backing vocals-agreat way to finish off.

With their upbeat and radio friendly sound I canpredict that it is only a matter of time before Empire Circus will take on the Irish Music Scene. The band promise you will get the urge to get up,get crazy, dance and sing like never before -andthat might be exactly what you will get up to if youcatch them live at the album launch show on September 28 in Grand Social..

Dublin blues rockers The Hot Sprockets are rap-idly becoming one of the country's most originaland phenomenal live bands. Even though I'veonly seen them play a couple of times, they're stillone of the best Irish live acts I've seen in the lastfew years. I'd recommend them to any of ourmusic loving readers, if you get the chance pleasedo check them out, you won't be disappointed.

Which brings us on to their latest single releaseComin On; a belter of a tune that further enhances their growing reputation. As the say-ing goes, making comparisons can spoil yourhappiness, and not wanting to wreck the buzzI'd say Comin On reminds me of early Kings ofLeon, back when they were a proper rockin'band playing their upbeat mixture of SouthernRock and Blues.

Comin On is a happy energetic number that'llstick in your head whether you want it to or not. With its jangily guitars, harmonicas and catchyfoot tapping sing-along chorus, it sounds like itonly came out of the Mississippi Swamp lastTuesday week.

The band have also put together a wonderfulvideo to go with the single which you can watchon their website: www.thehotsprockets.com

Game 44

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a free-roaming action adventure game for both current gen andnext gen consoles.

Players will take the role of youngcaptain Edward Kenway whose exploits earn the respect of piratelegends like Blackbeard, but drawhim into an ancient war that maydestroy everything the pirates have built.

A sequel to 2012's Assassin's CreedIII, the game will see the player takeon the role of an Abstergo Indus-tries research analyst as they ex-plore the story of Edward Kenway– father to Haytham Kenway, grandfather to Ratonhnhaké:tonand an ancestor of Desmond Miles.Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag willbe set primarily on and around theislands in the Caribbean Sea duringthe golden age of piracy in the early18th century, with three major citiesconsisting of Havana, Nassau andKingston.

About 60% of the game will takeplace on land; players can explore50 locations ranging from fisher-man villages, plantations, jungles, forts, islands, Mayan ruins and ex-otic coconut islands. Furthermore, there are around 75 beaches and

sandbanks, which can hold varioustreasures and marooned sailors toadd to Edward's crew.

Other activities include hunting, harpooning and exploring under-water environments. The gameaims to blend between its land andaquatic experiences seamlessly, tothe point where players can simplydive off Edward's ship, swim to theshore and explore the land, as wellas dive under the surface to lootunderwater ship wrecks. Ubisoftalso mentioned that 'exploration isthe key' and would be the focuspoint in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

View points will also return in BlackFlag. As in the previous games, view points have to be synchro-nized so as to reveal informationabout an area and its surroundings.Further, they will also serve thefunction of fast-travel locations.

Black Flag's combat has been upgraded to include free aiming. While previous installments relied onthe game's built-in auto aim, in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, players will be able to just aim andfire, similar to third-person shooters.

Dual-wielding weapons has alsobeen implemented, with Edwardbeing able to carry four flintlockpistols and be able to use them alltogether, chaining up to four gun-shots into a combo of attacks totake down more enemies. Asidefrom the pistols and his hiddenblades, Edward can equip dual cut-lass swords and chain their attackstogether. Other weapons include ablowpipe with multiple effectedprojectiles and rope darts. Accom-panying this, the stealth system hasbeen stated to return and to be en-couraged in the game. Full-on un-derwater combat system has alsobeen developed for Black Flag, in-cluding animals such as sharks andwhales.

The multiplayer aspect of BlackFlag will include cooperative andcompetitive multiplayer modesfrom previous games, alongsidenew maps and new characters.

ASSASSIN’S CREEDBLACK FLAGBy Cathal Jennings

Players will also be able to upgradeEdward Kenway's vessel – the Jack-daw – through pillaging, takingover enemy ships and completingmissions, granting the Jackdawwith new weapons and abilities. Ofthese, weapon upgrades includeround shot, heat shot, chain shot, mines, mortars, swivel guns and aram. Edward can recruit crew-members for the Jackdaw via sidemissions that include bar fights, and most importantly, through thebattle missions, but the crew mem-bers are also expected to die in thegame while braving storms andboarding enemy ships, forcing Ed-ward to continuously recruit moremembers. The crew themselves canalso be upgraded with new outfits, allowing for even more customiza-tion. The game will also have sixdifferent enemy archetypes at seathat all behave in vastly differentways and require the player to havedifferent upgrades to deal withthem.

clude things like "escape a pursuit"or "drift for 30 seconds" and getmore difficult as you progress. Forracers, the longer they evade policeand move through goals, the highertheir "heat score" and multiplierlevel. For cops, a racer with a higherheat score will yield more points andcan be dispatched with via a varietyof methods. Like Hot Pursuit andMost Wanted before it, Need forSpeed Rivals outfits both cops andracers with tech to either apprehendor evade other players and AI, likeEMP and spike strips.

Racers have a new tool in the formof hideouts, which allow the playerto enter a safe space and avoid apprehension, though at the sacrifice of a quickly diminishingmultiplier.

What is most striking about thegame, however, is its incredible vi-suals provided by DICE's Frostbite 3 engine. The vehicles arerendered with meticulous detail and lighting effects. Rain-soaked car bodies reflect beau-tifully from the sun and the smallestparticles of spray from your wheelsas they roll over a wet road add to arich and detailed environment.

In Need for Speed Rivals, Ghost Studiosisn't confining players to rigid multiplayermatches, nor are theysubjecting them to thechaos of a racing MMO.

Instead, players are introduced toa world where friends are seam-lessly integrated into the world asthey progress through its campaigns via a new featurecalled All Drive. Players take onthe roles of either a racer or acop, progressing through mis-sions and challenges in the openworld of Redview County. As theymove through the world, friendsalso playing the game will be introduced without matchmakinglobbies or loading screens.

In a hands-on E3 demo, GhostStudios showcased a scenariowhere six players are in the sameworld three cops and three racers. Each started at variousplaces on the map with both AIcops and competitors. Racerscould choose to challenge otherplayers or access campaign races, while cops could choose to engage in specific missions orchase down random passers byAI or otherwise.

Spurned largely by the fact that Ihad a limited time to acclimate tothe All Drive system, as a cop Ifound it difficult to discernhuman players vs. AI players butI suppose that's the point. Bothcops and racers have a set of ob-jectives during any race or pur-suit, which grants them pointsand multipliers. These goals in-

With All Drive and its new tabletintegration, Need for Speed Rivalsseeks to harness next-gen powerto create seamless multiplayerand single player experiences.Whether or not it can do so in away that's intuitive and cohesiveremains to be seen, but it's off toa great start.

Inside, the 2008 is very similar tothe 208 hatchback. Peugeot havedesigned the dash so that you viewthe dials over the steering wheel, which means you will have to havethe steering wheel itself set quitelow. However there is a great sense

of space, especially forback seat passengers.

The boot is also a great plus andmay surprise many, it’s actually oneof the most practical loading baysin its class.

Air vents, touch screen trims, hand-brake and gear lever as well as thesteering wheel get a satin chromefinish, which Peugeot says gives ita premium feel.

Three trim levels are offered asever: Access, Active and Allure.Standard specification across the

line-up includes LED day-time running lights, air

The drive itself is comfortable andin some aspects that’s all the buyerwants. The steering is quite lightand with the high positioning of thediving seat you will feel quite atease when travelling on eithershort or long distance journeys.

There are a lot of similarities withthis model and the Peugeot 208but the Crossover has its own personality and style.

China and Sao Paulo, LatinAmerica worked together

That undercuts its direct rivals fromNissan, Renault and Opel. Thecheapest diesel model costs €19,515and all versions fall into Band A forVRT and annual road tax.

From first glance the new modeldoes indeed look like a big car dueto its chunky styling but it’s actu-ally not much bigger thana super mini and it’s frontwheel drive only. Whatit does aim to dois offer us some-thing of the SUVpracticality butin a more com-pact body.

New programme launched to bridge gap between edu-cation and jobs in animationand games industries

A new programme has been launched, designed to assist graduates to take thestep from education to developing careersin Ireland’s growing animation and gamesindustries. Thirteen students from Ballyfer-mot College are participating in ‘TheBridge’ programme which is based in theGuinness Enterprise Centre, Dublin.

The initiative is collaboration between Bal-lyfermot College, the Guinness EnterpriseCentre, Dublin Business Innovation Centre(Dublin BIC) and creative industry heavy-weights: Havok, JAM Media, Brown BagFilms and Riot Games. It aims to nurturekey talent for current and future industryneeds in the area of animation, games andrelated areas like VFX (visual effects).

The programme was initiated in June 2013in response to a skills shortage in the animation and games industries, with 44%of companies in these and related sectorsciting recruitment and staffing as theirmain business concern. Demand for talentis now outweighing the supply, with manycompanies having to hire animators outside of Ireland to support their work. This has come to the fore recently as the Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Enterprise (Minister Bruton) has increasedby 700 the employment permits for skilledoverseas employees to off-set the shortage in Ireland. If projected growth isrealised, more talent needs to enter the industry in Ireland.

50THE LUCIDDREAMERBy Sharon Piggot

I am an Arabian colt, gliding through lavender fieldswith my golden mane glistening in honey hues. The whispering wind serenades with tranquil tonesand I am blissfully lost in her hypnotic symphony.

In azure skies above, a halcyon majestically soars, following for a fleeting yet memorable moment. The gentle rain kisses my light palomino coat, taming my restless soul with her tenderness.

I am free here among these kindred spirits. My Shangri-La I have searched for and found.Life radiates in flaming ambers from every poreand embracing me in her untamed arms, I stay.

Neil Jordan is so famed as a filmmaker that I had no idea he also wrote books.

This is another of my mother’s books that foundits way into my library. When choosing my nextnovel I recognised Jordan’s name and thoughtthe title enigmatic enough to warrant a read.

“I had been mistaken for him so many timesthat when he died it was as if part of myself haddied too.” Mistaken begins with the funeral ofGerald Spain, once a successful author, whodied suddenly in his mid fifties. Our narrator,Kevin Thunder, was frequently mistaken forGerald in his younger days, given their strongressemblance.

Kevin grew up under that shadow of this double– a boy so uncannily like him that they were mistaken for each other at every turn. As children in 1960s Dublin, one lived next to BramStoker’s house, haunted by an imagined Dracula, the other in the more refined spacesof Palmerston Park.

Though divided, like the city itself, by back-ground and class, they shared the same smell, the same looks, and perhaps, as he comes torealise, the same soul. They exchange identitieswhen it suits them, as their lives take them toEngland and America, and find that taking onanother’s personality can lead to darker placesthan either had imagined.

When Kevin and his double, Gerald Spain, meetup, the exchanging identities for various purposes is at first almost a game, something tomake their lives easier, to achieve things they feelthey can’t do as themselves. But, what starts outas a bit of fun, a way of making life easier or moreinteresting, turns very dark once they’re grownup and exchange identities one more time.

Jordan told Helen Brown of The Telegraph that“People have pretended to be me. People haveeven gone to book readings and pretended tobe me. That has happened a couple of times. There are some people who pretend to be lotsof people, pretending to be me until they findsomebody more interesting to pretend to be. Itwas quite disturbing. The bundle of emotions Italk about in this novel, I know them very well,it’s more of a kind of nagging suspicion, a sensethat you haven’t really lived your own life, thatyou haven’t lived the life that you should have.”

The themes of the book include identity, family, class and the sorrow of loss. As might be expected from a filmmaker, the book reads likea film and one can easily imagine the cuts beingmade between the two stories illustrating thelives of these dopplegangers born on differentsides of the tracks.

Regular readers of my column will know I loverecognising place names in literature and thiswas a feast in this regard. It’s very much aDublin book, with each chapter named after alocation such as Deangrange, Marino, Dunne& Crescenza and Wicklow Street. This addedgreatly to my enjoyment of a book that I foundimmersive and gripping, despite jumping between the two men’s stories, in time and inspace. It’s a really clever novel and well worth aread. Neil Jordan is a talented novelist as wellas a great filmmaker.

About The AuthorNeil Jordan is an Irish filmmaker and fiction writer. He won an Academy Award (Best OriginalScreenplay) for The Crying Game. He also wonthe Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for The Butcher Boy.

Jordan was born in County Sligo, the son of Angela (née O'Brien), a painter, and Michael Jordan, a professor. He was educated at St. Paul'sCollege, Raheny.

Of his religious background, Jordan said in a 1999Salon interview: "I was brought up a Catholic andwas quite religious at one stage in my life, whenI was young. But it left me with no scars whatever;it just sort of vanished."

He said about his current beliefs that "God is thegreatest imaginary being of all time. Along with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, theinvention of God is probably the greatest creationof human thought."

Later, Jordan attended University College Dublin, where he studied Irish history and English literature. Jordan now lives in a house on SorrentoTerrace in Dalkey.

Shaving Your Hair Will Make ItGrow Back Thicker?I always think it's funny when people blametheir strong hair growth on shaving when theywere young! When you shave your hair, you areonly cutting the top of the hair at skin level, so it will grow back quite quickly compared towaxing. Also, when you shave, you create ablunt edge so the hair will feel sharp and thehair initially appears darker because it hasn'tbeen exposed to UV rays or daily chemicals.

You Will Eventually Outgrow Acne?So many people associate acne with teenagersand presume that once they leave puberty, it'sin the past, which couldn't be further than thetruth. Hormone levels fluctuate throughout yourlife, particularly women, hence menstrual cyclebreakouts. The treatment principles are thesame no matter what your age. If you developacne, act upon it quickly so there is no scarring.

Dry Skin? Drink More Water? We all need a certain level of water daily to keepour bodies hydrated, but if only drinking waterwould supply our skin with enough moisture!

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, andusually gets the last of the vitamins and miner-als we take in. There's no doubt that drinkingwater will improve our complexion, but it alsotakes a beating every day from all the wind, rain, heating, air con, incorrect product use etc. So we need to supply our skin with enoughmoisture from an external method such as effective serums and moisturisers

Waxing Will Cause Wrinkles?I don't know how this started but I hear it all thetime! A huge amount of people are now con-cerned with waxing areas such as brows andlips in fear they will age prematurely! The break-down of collagen and elastin fibres are associ-ated with us ageing and they are located in thedermal layer of the skin which is quite deep. When wax is applied by a professional, the skinis held taut as the wax is removed, and this willnot lift or thin the skin. So if you like the resultsof waxing, stick with it!

Obsessive Face Washing Will Eliminate Acne?Getting spots does not mean your skin is dirty.

Many acne sufferers believe the more theywash their face the more they will "dry it out".This removes natural oils which can cause yourskin to produce more oil, and you can experi-ence tightness to the skin meaning it lacksmoisture. Stick to a skin regime morning andevening which has been recommended by askin care professional.

Facial Toners Will Close Pores? In my opinion, facial toners are a waste ofmoney. They don't really do anything that isproductive for the skin, apart from removing abit of excess cleanser and some of them smellnice. That is why cosmeceutical skin care brandsusually do not have toners.

They claim to close pores, but pores can't justswing open and closed! They appear enlargedusually because at some stage the oil gland wasoveractive and the oil didn't flow freely onto theskins surface. It mixed with dead skin cells andclogged the pore, which stretched it. Usingproducts with Salicylic acid and Alpha HydroxyAcids such as Glycolic Acid will certainly help tominimise the appearance of enlarged pores andprevent future blackheads

Proteins, just like carbohydrates, have been misunderstood over the years.

While it is true that protein is the most importantbuilding material for muscles, cell membranes, connective tissue, hormones, enzymes and the immune system, it has been said that the Irish people consume more than what is needed.

Proteins contain twenty amino acids, nine of whichare essential to the diet, meaning that we need toget them through our diet. These amino acids arefound in both animal and plant sources, howeveronly animal based products contain the essentialamino acids.

For this reason it is important for those of us that areon vegetarian or vegan diets to eat a wide range ofplant based foods to ensure all the requirementsand needs are met for these essential amino acids.

Though carbohydrates are the body’s main fuelsource, protein can be used as an energy sourcewhen the carbohydrates stores are low. This is particularly relevant for endurance athletes under-taking intense training schedules, but care must betaken as if protein is used for fuel when carb sources

are low then there won’t be enough protein availableto the body for repairing and rebuilding the body’stissues including the muscles.

So what happens when we consume too much protein in our diet? Well it has been suggested thatover consumption of protein may lead to the excre-tion of calcium in the urine which may further leadto the risk of bone fractures or osteoporosis.

Excess weight gain may also be a problem as manyhigh protein foods are also high in fat and can beexpensive if a person tends to buy protein bars andshakes. There is much speculation that high proteindiets also contributes to certain cancers and mayalso be responsible for putting a strain on the kidneys too.

But what happens when a person doesn’t haveenough protein in their diet? They may see changesin their hair with the hair becoming brittle or thinand in some cases a person may develop Alopecia. This is hair loss which can occur in either patches orlarge areas. They may also experience changes inskin pigmentation or develop dermatitis or pressureulcers. As protein is responsible for growth and repairthe quality of hair and skin in general becomes a lotpoorer to say the least.

The immune system may also be effected as anti-bodies that defend and protect the body against diseases are made from proteins. So a diet low inprotein may impair the immune system leading toan increase in infections. Inadequate protein in thediet may also lead to muscle weakness and musclewasting which leads to a loss of muscle mass. Thismuscle wasting disease is known as Kwashiorkor. Itis also suggested that insufficient protein in childrenmay be the cause of failed weight gain and failurefor children to grow.

So protein is really an essential part of our diet withthe World Health Organisation recommending thatour intake of protein should make up 10-15% of ourdaily calorie intake. Of course this requirement mayincrease slightly with those that are exercising reg-ularly, although most athletes meet their increasedprotein needs throught the increased amount offood they consume to support the training.

Remember that dietary protein first and foremostshould come from whole foods and average por-tions should be two to three a day. The best animalsources are lean turkey, lean beef, pork loin (chops),eggs and fish like salmon, tuna and halibut. Plantsources can be found in peas, beans, nuts and lentils.

Bugs can be annoying little devilsbut not always.

If insects weren't around to pollinate plants, toeat other insects and to get eaten by birds weactually wouldn't be around very long either.

Ladybugs (or Lady Beetles):Ladybugs are very beneficial to your garden, asthey eat other insects that are harmful and yetmany gardeners unintentionally kill these beneficial insects while they are young becausethey do not recognize them while they are inthis stage of life. While still a nymph, ladybugsactually resemble tiny black alligators that areabout half their adult length. They also containorange, red, or white markings. This colourationand overall look can make ladybug nymphslook a bit frightening, despite their kind natureand helpful garden habits.

During the winter, ladybugs prefer to rest in dryareas that provide them adequate protection, such as house roofing tiles, tree bark, and in theattics of homes. In the early spring, they willcome out from hiding. They begin feeding andlaying their eggs immediately. In fact, one female ladybug can lay up to 1,000 eggs in aperiod that is just over three months. When theyoung hatch, they begin feeding immediately

as well. In just the three weeks it takes for the lady-bug nymph to pupate, it will eat approximately 400harmful aphids. In all, a ladybug eats about 5,000aphids during its entire lifetime. In addition, they eatwhitefly pupa, soft scale, spider mites, and thrips –all of which can cause harm to your garden.

LacewingsThe most common good thing about "good" insects is that they will eat "bad" insects and otherpests. This is true of the lacewing, a 3/4 inch longgreen or brown insect with transparent, veinedwings. The lacewing is especially helpful in its larvalstage, when it eats aphids, moth eggs, caterpillars, thrips and mites, and other small insects that cando considerable damage to plants, as well as theeggs of such insects. In fact, the larval lacewing issometimes called an "aphid lion”.

Hover fliesAlso dubbed as flower or syrphid flies, hover fliesare often confused with wasps or bees. Similar tothe lacewings, the larvae of the hover flies feed onaphids that like to live in tight, hard to reach places.Another thing that you should know about hoverflies larvae is that they appear early in spring –long before any other helpful insect – and areknown to help obtain larger and more beautifulraspberries and strawberries.

Ground beetleEven though they are not the most pleasantsight in your garden, the ground beetle is definitely an insect you want there. Theselong-legged and rather large bugs like to feedon insects that are particularly harmful forvegetables. Therefore, if you intend to plantpotatoes, cabbage or tomatoes, don’t forgetto add a few rocks, logs and perennial groundcovers to attract them.

Wasps and HoneybeesWhile their sting is painful and will often leadto swelling, the truth is that wasps and honeybees of all sizes are a blessing for anygarden. The small wasps are known to attackthe eggs of all sorts of pests and are perhapsone of the best insects to provide an efficientpest garden control.

SpidersIf you don’t have spiders in the flower or vegetable garden, you risk a pest outbreak. While most of us think the worst of them, restassured that the spiders in your garden will never enter your home and are not poisonous. If you don’t spot any, then you canattract them by planting straw mulches orpermanent perennial plants.

Arrivederci Trapattoni

On 11 September 2013 Giovanni Trapat-toni left his post of Irish Soccer managerby “mutual consent” Trap had been incharge for over 5 years and had steeredIreland to a World Cup playoff which theylost in controversial circumstances in Paris, and an ill fated European Championshipin Poland in 2012.

He managed the team on 64 occasionswinning 26, drawing 22 and losing on just16 occasions. Failure to qualify for Brazil2014 seems to have brought the curtaindown on his reign although it is still mathematically possible but highly unlikely. InRovers 58

The FAI Cup Drive For 25is well and truly on track as The Hoops look forward to the trip to the Showgrounds next month for a mouth watering semifinal with Sligo Rovers.

When Shamrock Rovers last wonthe cup in 1987, for the 24th timein their history, they overcame St Pats in the Quarters, Sligo in thesemis and Dundalk in the final.

No Rovers fan of a certain age willneed reminding that the club’s lastever game at Milltown was againstSligo in the Cup semi-final replaythat year. That game finished 1-1with Mick Byrne scoring the lastever goal at the famous old ground.

This season Pats have already beenseen off in the previous round withSligo to come and Dundalk andDrogheda in the other semi light-ning could be about to strike twice.

Football does have a rich history ofcreating these mad coincidences,so for the superstitious among youlet me also point out that in ‘87 ittook three games to decide thesemi final. Everyone set for an epicshowdown this year so with the BitO’Red?!

The Hoops are unbeaten againstthe current league champions inthree meetings this season, the twoleague games were drawn 1-1 and0-0 with Rovers winning the EASports Cup Semi 3-2 in Tallaght.

Sligo have shown good form in thisseasons FAI Cup, they're yet to concede a goal in the tournamentand saw off both Cork City andDerry City 1-0 at home in the previous rounds.

The draw has been kind to the menfrom the Northwest with them getting home advantage for thethird time in a row.

The latest journey in the Roversdrive for 25 began at the end ofMay when the Hoops made the tripto Salthill Devon for their first gamein this seasons competition.

The third round of the cup has seenits fair share of shocks down theyears and Rovers took to the fieldat Eamonn Deacy Park not wantingto be beaten by the side who werebottom of the First Division.

For assistant manager ColinHawkins it was to be a special

occasion as he faced his hometown club. Rovers started well, butSalthill were proving tricky cus-tomers as they battled andscrapped for every single ball.

After The Hoops had come close tobreaking the deadlock on two occasions it was Salthill's Enda Curran who almost opened thescoring when his fine free kicksmacked off the crossbar.

Five minutes into the second half itwas Jason McGuinness's turn to hitthe woodwork but Rovers weregetting closer and the goal theycraved finally came just after thehour as Karl Sheppard’s invitingcross was headed home by substi-tute Billy Dennehy.

It was that man Dennehy againwho scored the clinching goal as he met Conor McCormack’s deep cross to finish emphaticallyand send Rovers on their way toround four.

Next up for The Hoops was a homefixture with non league Sheriff YC,a side with an impressive cuprecord having recently won back toback FAI Junior Cups.

InTallaghtMaster42_Layout 1 18/09/2013 22:44 Page 58

Page 59: InTallaght EDITION 42

InRovers59Rovers played well for the first 20minutes, a period which saw themclaim two goals through TommyStewart and Shane Robinson, butthen proceeded to take the foot offthe gas as Sheriff began to findtheir feet.

It was far from convincing fromRovers, but they did just aboutenough to see off their plucky opponents.Sheriff did cause Roverssome problems and halved thedeficit in the 56th minute whenJohn Rock got on the end of a crossto head the ball into the back of the Rovers net.

With some of the home supportersnerves jangling Karl Sheppard goton the end of a Murphy kick outbefore being fouled by the Sheriffkeeper to give Rovers a penalty andthe chance to kill off any hopes forthe non leaguers.

Mark Quigley stepped up to convert the spot kick and sendRovers into the Quarter final.

Then came the trip to Richmond Park to lockhorns with league leadersSt Pats for a place in thesemi finals.

Rovers sold out all their ticketallocation for this eagerly antici-pated Quarter Final. The Hoopswere fastest out of the blocksproducing an exceptional first-half display to shock the hypedup home crowd into silence.

It was barely over a monthsince Pats beat a 9 manRovers 4-0 in Tallaght somaybe there was a thirst forrevenge among the visitors asthey went about their business.

Ronan Finn struck first as heglanced a superb header in the16th minute off Conor Powell’scross to send the large travellingHoops fans into raptures.

Rovers were far superior and noone among the crowd of almost3,000 was surprised when they deservedly increased their lead inthe 33rd minute as Shane Robinsonscored for the second cup match ina row with a well executed volleyfrom eight yards.

Both O’Brien and Russell forcedgreat saves from Barry Murphy butRovers held on through a stormylast ten minutes to set up the semifinal clash with Sligo...and hopefullya repeat of ‘87!

Richard BrushINTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

60

Currently in his second spell with The Hoops, Brushie has been pushingBarry Murphy all the way in the battle to be Rovers number one.

InRovers recently caught up with the likeable Englishman for a chat.

How is the mood amongthe squad? The mood's really good in thecamp, obviously it's got a lot betterafter the last few results, it wasgreat to get the wins after the wobble we had. We were away claypigeon shooting yesterday and itwas good fun. I was the only onewho couldn't take part which was apity. I'm only coming back from ashoulder injury so it's probably notbest to put a shotgun up against itand start firing!

It's unfortunate the way theleague’s gone, we just haven't beenable to grind out the results. We stillhave some big games to come withthe League Cup final and the FAICup, hopefully we can keep this rungoing. It would be a great achieve-ment to end up winning three cupsthis season.

How is the shoulder? It's fine now, I'm back training and

fully fit. I've never been the luckiestwith injuries. This is the second injury I picked up this season, Ipicked up a groin injury before thestart of the season so I didn't get agood pre season and went in second choice. Then when I finallyget a chance I get another injury!Unfortunately I seem to get themthroughout my career.

On a personal level areyou enjoying this season? Well apart from the injuries yes, Ihave enjoyed it. Obviously as ateam we haven't shown the formthat's expected of us, we feel wehad the squad this year to chal-lenge for the title. But on a personallevel training’s gone well and thegames have been ticking alongnicely. I’m delighted to be back atShamrock Rovers. I really enjoyedmy last spell at the club and whenTrevor spoke to me about comingback, there was no decision to bemade as far as I was concerned.

Have you been thinkingabout your plans for next season yet?No I haven't, I just want to get thisseason out of the way first before Istart thinking about next season.I know it's a cliche but I'm just tak-ing each game as it comes. Obvi-ously I'm looking to stay at Roversfor another year. With the squadthe manager has put together I thinkRovers will be going to some excitingplaces next season and I want to bepart of that. Contracts aren't beingspoken about yet anyway.

You've been playing inthe League Of Irelandsince 2006, what, if any, changes have you noticed? When I first came over from Eng-land it was the tail end of the bigname top earners but there was stillprobably more money in theleague than there is now. Has therebeen an improvement in the stan-

dard in the league? I don't know, it'sa tough one to call. Some of theplayers are really good technicallyand you don't get too many teamsthat just play long ball.

I suppose the Premier is maybe abit more competitive now than itwas back then. There were someteams that were a lot weaker thanthe teams in the rest of the division,no disrespect to them but you hadteams like Dublin City who wereprobably an example of this. Thereis quality in the league now thoughas is proven by the amount of play-ers from here who are moving overto the UK and doing well.

Did the Irish phenome-non of football fans here supporting Englishclubs rather than theirlocal team surprise youwhen you came herefrom England?Yeah it is a bit of a strange one allright! Obviously there is an attrac-tion to big players, big clubs and inthat sense the English PremierLeague is attractive. But personallyI feel that if you're a football fan youshould want want to watch livefootball, which doesn't seem to bethe case in Ireland. The teams inour league all play the right wayand anyone can beat anyone, it's alot better than people think, itwould be great if more football fanshere gave it a chance, they mightbe surprised.

Does the lack of interestfrom the general publicannoy the players whoplay in the LOI?To borrow another cliche but it is afunny old game. As players we loveplaying football, and we're lucky

InTallaghtMaster42_Layout 1 18/09/2013 22:44 Page 60

Page 61: InTallaght EDITION 42

61 enough to get paid for it, so we justget on with it and don't really thinkabout that too much. We obviouslywould love to play in front of big-ger crowds but that's the way it is.

Who has been the biggestinfluence on your career? My parents have been my main in-fluence from when I was veryyoung. When I was 12 I was play-ing with Coventry but living inBirmingham so that meant theyhad to drive me there and back alot during the week for trainingand matches. It's about a 30minute drive. Plus they would haveto buy all my equipment like myboots and gloves which they did. Ireally appreciate everything theydid for me.

Who has been thetoughest opponentyou've ever faced?Jermaine Defoe in that Europa League match at WhiteHart Lane. I remember getting aback pass and when I took a touchhe was on the 18 yard line, nextthing he was right on top of meand blocked my clearance! Ab-solutely lightning quick he was.

And your most memorable match? That game with Spurs. There's beena couple of memorable ones butthat was the best, the whole thingof going home to England andplaying against such a great teamas Spurs. We were expected to beannihilated and while we wereunder the cosh for long spells weheld our own and even took thelead. Some people say “Oh it wasonly the Spurs reserve side” but ifyou look at some of the players

they played that night most ofthem were internationals. Weearned a lot of plaudits that night.

Who was your favouriteplayer when you were a kid?Peter Schmichael. He was so differ-ent and so good, the best in theworld when I was growing up.

Have you ever met him?No unfortunately I haven't but Ihave got to meet some other goalkeeping legends along the way. Steve

Ogrizavic brought me through atCoventry. Andy Goram was withCoventry as well when I was there.Absolute mad man he was! He usedto get all the young lads to takeshots at him and he would divearound saving balls with his head!He was also a very nice guy.

Finally Richard what kind of stuff do you like to do away fromfootball to unwind? As I'm still commuting from Sligo, and I have a wife and a little girl, I

don't have much time for anythingelse really apart from house work!I'm massively into music, I loveheavy metal.

Do you get to play it in the dressing room?No not really, if I stick it on it getsturned off straight away! ShaneRobinson is in charge of the music,I'm not sure what it is, I think it'ssupposed to be House music. My music would be a bit more inyour face!
