1 INSURANCE COURSES About IIU The Insurance Institute of Uganda was established in 1964 as the training arm of Uganda’s Insurance Sector with a mandate to carry out education, training, and professional development in the sector. It is also the representative professional body under the Law. The above mandate is recognized under the current Insurance (Amendment) Act 2011, which came into force in 2011 IIU is a private tertiary institution licensed by the National Council for Higher Education (NHCE). INSURANCE COURSES

About IIU

The Insurance Institute of Uganda was established in 1964 as the training arm of Uganda’s Insurance Sector with a mandate to carry out education, training, and professional development in the sector. It is also the representative professional body under the Law.

The above mandate is recognized under the current Insurance (Amendment) Act 2011, which came into force in 2011

IIU is a private tertiary institution licensed by the National Council for Higher Education (NHCE). All its programs are accredited and recognized by NCHE.

GETTING STARTED

Membership

Individual IIU membership is a prerequisite for enrollment on any of the IIU study programmes. You are required to enlist at least for ordinary/student membership upon admission. Membership fees are due every beginning of the year

Course Commencements/Intakes

IIU conducts two intakes per year:

• 15th February

• 15th August

Deadline for application is usually two weeks before the commencement of the programmes.

Certificate of Proficiency (COP)Entry requirements

To be admitted to the Certificate in Insurance programme, the following shall apply:

• Uganda Certificate of Education(UCE) with a minimum of three passes

OR

• Possession of appropriate or relevant professional qualifications from reputable institutions

Completion

To complete the Certificate in Insurance programme, one must accumulate at least 30 credits.

Who should do this programme?

The COP is the foundational course in insurance introducing the basic insurance principles. A subset of the Certificate in insurance course, the COP course is appropriate for those who are new to the industry, either direct from school with, without Matric or direct from a tertiary qualification with a non-insurance qualification. It also provides a valuable introduction to insurance for those employed in support activities to the industry, such as IT, auditing, accounting and secretarial support.

Examinations:

The examinations are held twice a year in April and October. Please note that the assessment usually involves two Continuous Assessment (CAT) tests per sitting before the final examinations are sat. The CAT test contribute to the final results

Sponsorships:

IIU does not have sponsorship programmes for its courses. However students attached to corporate member companies usually access sponsorship from their companies

Who should do this programme?

The certificate in Insurance is appropriate for candidates wishing to gain a broad understanding of insurance principles, key disciplines and products. It is good for employees who have no formal insurance qualifications but wish to objectively demonstrate insurance knowledge and understanding plus anyone working in specific technical claims handling or underwriting roles.

Insurance staff employed in support functions such as human resources, marketing, IT and finance wishing to develop an understanding of the industry in which they work, or staff working for an organization whose primary business is not insurance, but which offers insurance advice and products as part of its overall service to customers may also apply.

i) Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE)

OR

ii) Possession of a certificate in insurance from a reputable professional insurance institute

OR

Any other qualifications e.g. Degree, Diploma, Professional that will be assessed by IIU for admission

Completion

To complete the Diploma in Insurance programme, one must sit and pass the required number of papers as stipulated by the syllabus (see subjects

table). Students will be exempted from papers they passed under the COP programme if any

Who should do this programme?

The Diploma in Insurance is appropriate for:

i) Insurance technicians and those who aspire to be technicians.

ii) Supervisors, team leaders and those with long-term ambitions of assuming managerial responsibilities.

iii) Anyone wishing to hold a recognized, respected insurance qualification.

iv) Insurance staff employed in support functions wishing to develop their knowledge of the insurance business.

v) Those wanting to develop their knowledge and understanding as part of a progression towards completion of the Advanced Diploma in Insurance and Chartered status.

• Your application will not be considered if it is not fully filled or if any of the required attachments are missing

• Take a personal interest in the status of your application and do not leave it in the hands of your company coordinators

Application procedure

Application forms can be acquired from the IIU premises or downloaded from the IIU website. There are two types of application forms: one for new students and another for continuing students (only students who have registered for courses beginning with April 2015 intake fall in the category of continuing students)

• Fill the appropriate form completely and attach all the necessary attachments (make sure you sign the form personally

• Pick a payment-slip from the Institute and pay the registration fees in the IIU bank account.

• Hand in the fully filled application form together with all the attachments and proof of payment of registration fees

• You will receive an application advice –slip indicating when to check for your admission

• Pick your admission on the day indicated (for students who meet the minimum requirements only)

• New students should soon thereafter present their original academic certificates for verification by the Head of examinations and awards.
