Our pediatric radiologists are subspecialty trained and are keenly aware of the unique chal-lenges that pediatric patients present. We offer experienced guid-ance in selecting the most appropriate exam for each patient. Wake Radiology is the first practice in Raleigh to open a dedi-cated pediatric outpatient imaging center. Four fellowship-trained pe-diatric radiologists have created a child-friendly environment for our young patients, who range from a few days of age to 18 years old. We know that combining advanced radiation therapies with exceptional care, compassion, and dignity makes the difficulties of cancer treatment a little easier for our patients to manage. Image guided radiation Therapy (IgrT)Our advanced IGRT allows for precise positioning of the patient prior to each radiation treatment. This leading-edge technology, coupled with Intensity Mod-ulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) when needed, accurately directs a radiation beam to spare more healthy tissue and lessen side effects.

mammosite® radiation Therapy system for Breast cancerFor the treatment of breast cancer, this internal treatment is delivered twice a day for just five days, compared to six weeks for traditional radiation treatment. Dr. Scott Sailer was the area’s first radiation oncologist to offer MammoSite.

Liver Brachytherapy This state-of-the-art procedure implants tiny microspheres into the liver to de-liver a continuous radiation dosage over 14 days. This innovative therapy can be beneficial for patients who have inoperable liver tumors or who have not responded to other cancer therapies. Dr. Andrew Kennedy is internationally re-spected for the work and advances he’s made using microsphere technology.

magnetic resonance Imaging (mrI)Combining a 1.5T magnet and radio frequencies, MRI creates high-quality im-ages that can demonstrate internal structures with amazing detail. MRI is excel-lent for determining the extent of an injury or disease process and can detect or exclude cancer with a higher sensitivity than other imaging modalities.

computed Tomography (cT)CT is an advanced imaging technique that combines special X-ray equipment with advanced computers to generate cross-sectional images of the body. CT imaging provides greater detail and clarity, revealing more than regular X-ray.

Ultrasound (U/s)Ultrasound, which captures images in real time without using radiation, em-ploys high-frequency sound outside the range of normal hearing to depict inter-nal organs as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

PeT·cT and nuclear medicine PET·CT is a powerful tool that localizes and stages cancer. Using a radioactive tracer and 3-D imaging, we can visualize the function of organs and tissues, including the presence and extent of disease. Nuclear imaging also uses radiotracers to diagnose both benign and malignant diseases.

Interventional radiologyMinimally invasive procedures performed under image guidance can be used to diagnose disease through biopsy, provide direct access to veins via ports and PICCs used in dialysis or antibiotic therapy, and to relieve pain from varicose veins, spinal compression fractures, and uterine fibroids.
