Insulation Solution from TWIGA for Hotel Projects-Cost Saving
Fire and Health Safety issues
U.P.TWIGAJanuary 2010
TWIGA TWIGA Introduction of TWIGA
• A leading manufacturer of Glass Wool Insulation (green building material) in
India for more than 30 years.
• An ISO 9001 Company.
• A licensee of ISOVER-Saint Gobain.
• Total Capacity : 18000 MT per annum. Capacity addition is underway to meet
future demands.
• Three manufacturing units- Ambernath (near Mumbai) Sikandrabad (U.P),
Ghaziabad (U.P)
• Production line for Flexible Duct & Preformed Pipe Section has been set up at
its existing manufacturing facilities.
• In 2009 Twiga has received FM approval for its Glass wool products for use in HVAC and Building insulation.
TWIGA Topics Today
• Basics about insulation.
• Performance of insulation—Glass Wool as a Green Building Material
• Glass wool Application in Hotel projects :
-> Duct Wrap-> Duct Acoustic-> Insulated Ventilated Facade-> Dry wall/Partition Wall
• Case Study on Cost and Performance
• ECBC/ ASHRAE Compliance
• Health Safety of Glass wool
• Product Profile
TWIGA Basic Thermal Sc: Fourier Law of heat conduction
CONDUCTION :Heat flow without physical movement of the medium.
• The rate of heat flow ( Q in W/m2)
-directly proportional to the temperature difference ( T1-T2,where T1=hot face temp. T2=Cold face temperature)
-Inversely proportional to the thickness of the material (L)
-Depend on the nature of the material and its temperature ( K-thermal conductivity)
Q = K.A (T1-T2) / L
or, Q/A = (T1-T2) / (L/K). or, Q/A = (T1-T2) / Ror, Q/A =U.(T1-T2)
What is thermal insulation?
The material resist the heat flow when subjected to a temperature differential across it.
[ R= L/K ]
TWIGA
Better Insulation implies to :
- Lower K-value (Property of the material)
Basic information of a product and it have to be a tested data. It is independent to physical dimension of the product.
- Higher R-value (Property of the Object or Product and/or System)
Can be derived from the eqn. R= L / K.- Lower U-value (Property of the system)
Can be derived from U = 1 / (R1+R2+…)

Elaboration on Insulated Ventilated Façade / Rain screen
• A complex system of wall insulation where a ventilated air gap is ‘constructed’ after an external layer of glass wool insulation on masonry wall.
• It is a protective covering of the building skin hence it increases building life.
• Provide good insulation value to meet required energy performance.
• Superior aesthetic, yet easy to install.
• As per ECBC 2007 the U value of Opaque wall should be 0.44 maximum.
• ( U-0.43,can be achieved by using 24kg/m3 density of Glass wool with 60 mm thickness)
TWIGA
Dry Wall Construction/Partition Wall
• Light weight partition system
• Metallic framework (Studs, Floor and Ceiling Channels)
•Plasterboards fixed to framework using self tapping screws
• Finished with a jointing compound and paper tape for a monolithic finish.
•High thermal and acoustic performance with Glass wool insulation.
TWIGA Examples of Drywall systems
1. Dry lining systems
2. Interior partitions systems
3. Apartment partition walls

Some Facts
1. In Oct.2001 IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) re evaluated 1988 IARC assessment of glass fiber and removed glass, rock and slag wool from its list of substances “possibly carcinogenic”.
2. WHO’s report on SVFs 1988: “Fibers were not a cause for adverse health effect in building occupants”.
3. TWIGA introduced the manufacturing of Bio-soluble glass fibers in India under technical guidance of ISOVER SAINT GOBAIN.

Other Related Studies
• NAIMA (North American Insulation Manufacturer Association) study in 1997 :
-Impact of SVF’s (synthetic vitrified fiber) on Indoor Air Quality.
-Total 205 samples collected from 51 commercial and residential building
-21 outdoor samples collected from 19 outside building.-Result : air borne respirable fiber level is in the building
sample is very low and primarily organic, where the SVF and total inorganic fibers could not be calculated as the amount is negligible. SVF were found only 2 in 205 samples examined.

Cont.
●Duke University Medical Centre Study in 2001*:-HVAC system is not a significant source of glass fiberemission.-Fiber count in supply diffuser was very low averagevalue being 0.00015 fiber/cc.
Based on all these studies, it is quite conclusive that Fiberglass wool is completely safe and don’t have any health hazard.
