Scene 1.

Mariana: (talking with mother on the phone)

Mariana: Hola mami cmo ests? Acabo de llegar de la Universidad.Estoy muy contenta con mis clases, los compaeros son amables y elprofesor tambin. Espero sacar buenas notas en las asignaturas.

Nilmary:Estoy muy contenta de que ests bien, espero queests estudiando fuerte y aprendiendo mucho ingls. Buenosuerte, te deseo mucha suerte en tu ao y recuerda quepagamos tu universidad para que vayas a estudiar y no aperder el tiempo en fiestas.

Mariana: Vale mam, no seas pesada, ya sabes que voy a eso.

(Mariana takes out her books right away and beings to study)

(Simone: Mariana is an exchange student from Spain. She has just gotto Bishops and is very excited about her classes. She is very ambitiousand wants to get good grades. Her mom reinforces her to study hardas she is in debt to offer her daughter the possibility to study abroad.Mariana doesnt want to disappoint her mother but make her proud, soshe starts to study)

Scene 2

Nilmary (as teacher): Okay Mariana, are you ready to do yournews presentation?

Marianna: I am ready!Presentation: (leo mal)

Simone: How were you affected by the flood? What was the damage?

Did you lose anything?

Jordan: What was the water like? Was it smelly?? Was there rats in it??Nilmary: Did anyone die? How long did it last? How did you getout of your house??

(Mariana shocked, stuttering, trying to express herself but speaksSpanish instead)

(Simone: Back at home Mariana is concerned about her first week ofclass. She worked so hard on her presentation but couldnt answerquestions that she couldnt prepare for. She feels as though she failedand is worried about her mark. She calls her mom to tell her about her

worries.)

Mariana: Hola mama! Hola cario! Mam estoy preocupada por miprimera emana de clase. He trabajado muy duro y no entiendo laspreguntas que me hacen en clase. Es que tuve una presentacin elotro da, me preguntaron muchas cosas y como no saba lo que meiban a preguntar, no me lo prepar, entonces no supe como contestar.Entonces creo que he sacado una mala calificacin. Adems miroomate no ha aparecido por la habitacin y no he tenido con quienpracticar. Bueno mam, ya hablmos, adis.

Nilmary: No te preocupes, yo s que t has trabajado fuertepara tener buenas calificaciones, pero que no te olvides detener tu cabeza en los libros.

(Simone: She tells her mom how she stayed in all frosh week to workand still wasnt comfortable to answer spontaneously to questions afterher presentation. She tells her mom she thinks that she had probablyfailed the presentation and is getting a bad grade. Her mom comfortsher and tells her to keep studying hard. Mariana also tells her momthat she is curious about where her roommate is. She hasnt showed

up yet. Her mom says that she is worried about what kind of girl she isand warns her to not be distracted from her studying)

(Simone: Marianna is in the kitchen studying and her new roommateJordan comes in.)

Jordan: HIIIIIIIIIII! Oh my goodness it is so nice to finally meet you!! Myname is Jordan. I should have e-mailed you about my trip, youveprobably been wondering what your roommate has been MIA huh?!!

..Marianna: Eh, MIA?

Jordan: So my family and I have been DIEING to go on a trip and thefirst week of classes is not a big deal and all frosh stuff anyways soWHY NOT right?! So tell me about yourself, I want to knowEVERYTHING! What have you been doing?

Marianna: ah uh uhm..my uhm name uhm are uhm Mariana.I am the student exchange from Spain. Your mouth move reallyfastly.

Jordan: NO WAY I loooooove Spain. OMG Enrique Iglesias.

BABY I LIKE IT. THE WAY GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR.I CAN BE YOUR HERO BABY. I CAN TAKE AWAY THE PAIN OH YAHHHHH!Or wait or wait who am I right now???Shake your bon Shake your bon bon alright!

Mariana: hahahaha .mi madre va a flipar!! (says in Spanish)

Jordan: Reunion tonight, all the girls are going to Pizzaville will youpleeeease come?

Mariana: Eh StStstudying?

Jordan: You have time for just a dinner!?Mariana: Hmm Okay.Jordan: Dont worry my friends will love you! Youll have so much fun.One of my friends spent a year in Spain hed love to meet you!

Mariana: Okay.

(Simone: Two weeks laterThe girls have become great friends.Marianna has gone to two football games, a basketball game and thebar 3 times, and is really starting to like university. Jordan has shownher the library and has convinced her to study in the library with her

instead of locking herself in her room. She has made many friends andis really starting to improve her English.)

Nilmary: Thank you for your presentation. Really interesting.Now does anyone have any questions?

Jordan: what part of your research did you find the most informationon?

Mariana: I really founded a lot on the situation of the dolphins.

Nilmary: And what was so striking about this?

Mariana: Well Ill never go to Marine land thats for sure! They areexploiting those poor animals. They are not happily in those pools andare stressed out. They are supposed to travel thousands of miles a dayunderwater and now they are contained in a small pool with a lot ofnoise. Dolphins commit suicide every year. They just come up to theservice and dont go back under. I want to save the dolphins!

Nilmary: Well done!

(Simone: Marianna comes home and is so pleased with her

presentation. She is so much more comfortable. Jordan and friends arewaiting to hear all about it.)

Jordan: How did it go!?

Mariana: So great! I cant believe how much my English improved. Ithas made studying so much easier. I owe this to all of you! You havebeen so great being patient with me over the last couple of weeks andhelping me with my English and talking with me. Thank you!

Simone: Group hug!

(Throws away dictionary)

Marianna: Hi mom! Oh wait I meanHola!

Nilmary: Como te fue en el informe oral esta semana? Fuemajor qeu el del mes pasado?!!

Mariana: Claro que si me fue mucho major. Sabes que hubo un grupode estudiantes que me hizo unas preguntas muy dificiles y pudereponderlas todas!! Estoy super contenta.

Nilmary: Me alegro mucho por ti hija!! Estoy muy orgullosa deti!
