How are our students supported by Educational Technology and Information Literacy doing?

• Higher levels of achievement in Research and Inquiry based tasks on SBAC for our black and brown students than other parts of exam

• Achievement gaps persist in Research and Inquiry based tasks however• Study shows gains with Learning Tools to support our emerging readers• Sense of Belonging Data remaining flat or slightly down with roll out of

Technology Standards Update• OSPI is in final stages of

adopting ISTE Student Standards as new Ed Tech Standards

• These 7 traits match the goals of our Educational Technology and Information Literacy Programs.

• We have done trainings with ISTE and sent staff to national conferences

Updated Information Literacy Standards• Updated standards

provide a clear connection between the library program and other BSD initiatives.

• Librarians are focusing on the Include standard by diversifying our collection to make sure they include both window and mirror resources.5

Examples of Supporting ISTE and ALA Standards with the RTS and Librarians• Updated 4th Grade Social Studies CBA assessment coordinates

research and inquiry in the library with a redesigned task incorporating student voice and a more diverse group of historical figures in designing a new stamp

• Co-Teaching in 7th Grade ELA Argumentation Unit leveraging several of the King County databases as well as beginning the student’s “Research Toolkit” that grows 6-12 with the students.

• Research, Gamification, and Creative Communication piloted with RTS in 9th Grade Biology course using Minecraft, KCLS databases, and Office Mix to design a Mars Colony

SSB 6273- Digital Citizenship• In 2016, Legislator passed a bill requiring OSPI to study

improvements to Media Literacy and Digital Citizenship• In reviewing recommendations, our district began incorporating

Common Sense Media lessons and resources K-12.• K-5 lessons are provided in the library, 6-12 the Research

Technology Specialist supports integrating objectives into content areas

Universal Design for Learning

10

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.- It helps account for variability in planning and implementation

of lessons- UDL is included in ESSA language at the federal level

UDL: Learning Tools• Access provided to All students to read and write with more or less support using

student devices• BSD participated in a research study on use of "Learning Tools" that support narration

and dictation• http://bit.ly/onenoteudl

• Increases in reading proficiency documented in study match anecdotal stories from students and staff

Technology for Inclusion

12

• OneNote Class Notebook Platform allows for Curriculum Delivery and Collaboration between Para-Educator, Classroom Teacher, and Co-Teacher

• Technology used extensively in our 6-12 schools currently to support inclusion model

• Beginning stages of piloting classroom devices to support a similar experience for our K5 students

Community Engagement• Parent Universities and other Learning

Nights for Families are a new starting point to begin engagement around Technology and Information Literacy

• Room to continue to grow this experience beyond just K-8

• Curriculum Accessibility • Elementary OneNote overview on

www.bsd405.org• Continue to Recommend Secondary

Parents Sit Side by Side and Access Class Notebook’s of students (or access remotely)13

Diverse Books• Ongoing PD for all librarians• Sought out book lists from publishers with suggested titles• Evaluating collections to determine current diversity

• Lots of books with animal characters• Many books with black and brown characters• Looking for more specific characters that are culturally relevant to

our population• Collaborating with teachers to find culturally responsive texts to

add to collections and use in the classroom• Publishing companies are just now publishing more diverse

books.14

National Attention on Research and Inquiry"Many people assume that because young people are fluent in

social media they are equally perceptive about what they find there," said Professor Sam Wineburg, the lead author of the report and founder of SHEG. "Our work shows the opposite to be true.“

Stanford SHEG study helped shape how the Librarians and Research Technology Specialists integrate research skills, media literacy, and how to "read" the web.

SBAC Analysis:• Research and Inquiry for Secondary Students of Most Concern tends

to be an area of strength when disaggregating SBAC scores by Claim• This matches with Zaretta Hammond’s work on Culturally Responsive

Teaching with Research and Inquiry Tasks often lending themselves to student voice, authenticity, and relevance for all students

• Comparative Strength in Research and Inquiry not present for our Elementary Schools• This can be understood through limited opportunities for co-teaching

between librarian and classroom teacher as well as limited access to device to support research and inquiry. We are piloting what classroom sets of devices looks like in elementary school currently.

• Achievement Gaps in Research and Inquiry Persist for Black and Hispanic Students as well as Students Receiving SPED or ELD Services

King County Library Partnership• Every student has digital access to all resources in the KCLS

online library• Supports access to high quality research databases and choice

reading in and outside the classroom• Our usage is significantly higher than neighboring districts

5th Grade Technology Pilot• Goal: Build a model of high quality technology

integration for an elementary classroom that enables more opportunities to develop the ISTE traits for students.• Currently budgeted for 10-14 Classroom Sets of Computers for next

school year• Invited classrooms and grade-levels to apply to be part of pilot• Selection Process will include:

• Choosing grade level applications over a single teacher application• Willingness to be part of a PLC (Professional Learning Community)• Title School Status

• Already have a couple classrooms piloting different types of devices at different age bands to make sure we have the right device for a formal pilot

• Will collect SBAC and IAB Research/Inquiry Data in addition to student and staff perception surveys and focus groups to help shape tech integration moving forward22

Opportunities• Expanding our KCLS partnership to leverage resources beyond

databases and ebooks such as free access to a live, professional tutor online.

• Finding ways to measure other ISTE traits such as digital citizenship and collaboraiton without adding another standardized test

• Balancing Technology Access with Digital Health and Wellness• Continuing to Expand our Community Engagement particularly

in healthy technology use habits at school and home• Expanding early pilots such as Genius Hour in elementary

school that align with ISTE and Technology Transformation Frameworks such as T3.23
