THE TRANSLATION OF LITERATURES IN BASQUE, CATALAN/VALENCIAN AND GALICIAN: INTERNATIONALISATION STRATEGIES IN THE BRITISH BOOK MARKET

Thu 3, 3:00 pmOnline event, via Zoom. In English and Spanish

This event will discuss current challenges and opportunities faced by literatures written in the Basque, Catalan/Valencian and Galician languages in their translation into English. Scholars, delegates from source-culture institutions and representatives from the British publishing houses that are currently leading the translation market will explore the following questions: What makes British publishers translate literature written in lesser translated languages? Do translation grants matter? What is the circulation and dissemination of translated literary works from these languages? How are they received in the anglosphere? Will the 2022 edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair, in which Spain will be guest of honour, be a turning point in the internationalisation of these literatures?

TWO HISPANISTS IN CONVERSATION ABOUT SPAIN AND ITS HISTORYWith Robert Goodwin (UCL) and Alexander Samson (UCL).“Hispanglia, the Traces of Spain in England” Series, 2

Thu 10, 6:00 pmOnline event, via Zoom. In English

A broad-ranging conversation, a mutual interview that will touch on politics, colonialism, imperialism, art, literature, theatre, and British attitudes to Spain across the ages. As a touchstone to that discussion, we bring in Dr. Samson’s fascinating recent research into the question of ¿what did it mean to be a “Spaniard” or español in the Habsburg period? We will also reflect on Dr. Samson’s recent research into the relations between England and Spain during the early modern perio and his long standing love of Golden Age theatre. We will endeavor to set those subjects within the broader story of Castile and her empire as told in Spain: the Centre of the World, 1519-1682 (Bloomsbury 2015) and América: the Epic Story of Spanish North America, 1492-1898 (Bloomsbury 2019).

    HISTORY. LECTURE

THE SPANISH CRAZE: AMERICA’S DISCOVERY OF THE ARTS & CULTURES OF THE HISPANIC WORLD, CA. 1880-CA. 1930 By Richard L. Kagan (Johns Hopkins University)

Wed 16, 7:00 pm Online event, via Zoom. In English

At the close of nineteenth-century Spain and the United States went to war. Paradoxically, that same era ushered in new interest in Spanish, and more broadly, Hispanic culture throughout the United States. This ‘craze’ for Spain manifested itself in multiple realms: art and architecture, as well as in literature, food, fashion, and design. This illustrated lecture explores the origins of this ‘craze,’ the factors that fueled it, and, finally, why its etched itself into American culture in ways that the “mini” Spanish craze of Edwardian Britain did not. Richard L. Kaganis the author of, among other well-known books, of The Spanish Craze. America’s Fascination with the Hispanic World, 1779-1939 (University of Nevraska Press, 2019).
