Who is CCI?

• Certifying board for perioperative nurses and registered nurse first assistants

• Incorporated in 1979 and headquartered in Denver

• Two credentialing programs: CNOR and CRNFA

• CNORs = 34,000 and CRNFAs = 1,400

• Programs are nationally accredited

History of Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management

• Program launched in 2007.

• Since that date, over 750 managers have enrolled in the program.

• Developed from data collected in a large-scale, national survey.

• Designed address a significant situation facing most surgical services departments:

To ease the nursing shortage, the retention of current nursing staff has become critical. All research and literature shows that the nurse manager is a key component in the retention process. Yet, many nurse managers are often thrust into the role without formal leadership or management preparation.

• This program is structured to provide detailed knowledge in the six most important areas of management.

• The only Management Certificate Program specific to perioperative

services and may be completed according to a participant’s schedule.

What is a Certificate Program?

• A certificate program is a non-degree granting education or training program.

•  Two criteria for a Certificate Program:

1. A learning event designed to educate an individual(s) to achieve specified learning outcomes within a defined scope.

2. A system designed to ensure that an individual(s) receive a certificate only after verification of successful completion of all program requisites including but not limited to an evaluation of learner achievement.

• Conferred a Certificate of Mastery at the end of the program.

• Individuals are not granted a designation or associated acronym (for example, CAE for Certified Association Executive)

•  There are no ongoing requirements to maintain a certificate.

• The program content was determined from a national survey of surgical services managers.

• The content is focused on the six general areas of expertise needed to be successful in the managerial role. 1. Professionalism 2.4 CEs

• Findings from a survey of past participants include: • 76% of respondents said they purchased the program to expand their skills

in surgical services management.• 66% of respondents said that the pre-assessment exam provided a helpful

roadmap to complete the program.• 94% of respondents said the case studies were applicable.• 87% of respondents believed that the six modules were adequate to cover

the topic of surgical services management.• 83% of respondents didn't feel additional topics needed to be covered in the

Baptist Memorial Hospital Perioperative Leadership Institute, Memphis, TN

• Baptist Memorial Hospital is utilizing the Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management as the foundation for their 18-month Perioperative Leadership Institute.

• 18 surgical services managers from 15 hospitals participated in the PLI program.

• Goals of Baptist PLI:1. Create a leadership development/succession plan to help build the

leadership pipeline within perioperative services.

2. Make succession planning and leadership development more than just an annual exercise.

3. Develop and execute a management development program to prepare high-potential employees.

Kaiser Permanente Southern CaliforniaPerioperative Leadership Academy

• Kaiser Permanente is utilizing the Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management as the foundation for their seven-month Perioperative Leadership Academy.

• 25 surgical services managers from 25 hospitals are participating in the PLA program.

• Started in December 2010.

• Goals of the Kaiser Permanente PLA:

1. To enhance the directors capacity to manage their facility’s surgical services organizations.

2. To focus on activities of planning, organizing, leading and coordinating resources.

3. To help identified leaders manage their own learning.

Sample Program Structure

1. Pre-Assessment Survey. Each month, participants take an online pre-assessment survey of 15 questions.

2. Read one of the modules prior to attending the Monthly Managers Meeting.

3. Attend and participate in Monthly Managers Meeting which feature hospital speakers.

4. Complete online Post-Assessment Test and evaluation form.

5. Receive Certificate of Mastery with CE award statement upon successful completion of all six modules and submission of evaluation forms.
