The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with the mandate and the responsibility of training all the categories of health manpower needed in the country.

• Trivhuvan University Teaching Hospital was completed in 1983 with support from JICA
• Three years Postgraduate Generalist (Family Physician of MD General Practice) Training was started with the collaboration of Calgary University

About TUTH
• Established in 1983 with the cooperation of the Government of Japan.
• provides practical field for the academic training programs (basic, graduate and postgraduate).
• It has the largest number of medical specialties in any hospital in Nepal with 22 departments.
• It has 500 beds and expanding.
Role of TUTH
Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital has been established to fulfill the following roles:
– To provide a teaching base for the Institute of Medicine for all types of academic programs.
– To provide tertiary level of health services to the patients in Nepal and be a lead national hospital in this area.
– To act as the main center to conduct health researches in Nepal and resolve problems in this area in Nepal.

BPK Center for Ophthalmic Studies• Established under the umbrella of IOM with the
mission of to improve the eye health status of people of Nepal.
• With service as priority, the centre has yet another equally important purpose of producing highly skilled ophthalmic human resource determined to fight against blindness.
• The struggle of the centre to minimize blindness does not remain confined to the national territory only its also trains ophthalmic manpower for many other developing countries as well.
BPK Center….
• The postgraduation education in ophthalmology at the centre aims to produce specialized medical professionals for nations.
• Apart from developing models for prevention of blindness from ocular trauma at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
• the centre also aims to serve as a resource centre for collection and dissemination of information and knowledge through library, museum, instrumentation and documentation facilities.
Established on 26th April 2009 under T.U. Institute of Medicine (IOM) with the following principle objectives:
– To provide the best specialized care to the patients with Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular diseases.
– To provide highly skilled human resource in the aforementioned fields and
– To carryout continuous research to contribute in the advancement of these services.
Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center
Center is running with a overall Bed capacity of:
– 61 bed that includes 45 general beds
– 6 ICU beds
– 8 CCU beds
– 8 emergency
– 3 general Cabin beds
– 1 special CCU cabin.
MCVTC Facilities
Emergency service– offers cardiothoracic and vascular emergency service for
round the clock.
– A well equipped 8 bedded emergency care section is specially oriented for Cardiac emergencies.
– Patients are taken care by on duty house officers under direct supervision of DM residents and by consultants if required.
Operation Theater– recently completed the construction of 3 world class
modular operation theatre.
– it will also help TUTH extend transplantation services.
MCVTC Facilities….
Cath Lab– Cardiac Cath Lab (Philips) has been installed.
– Center is providing all adult and pediatric cardiac intervention.
– Perticularly Coronary Angiogram, Elective and Emergency Coronary Angioplasty, Pacemakers including ICD and CRT implantation, device closure of congenital heart disease and many more percutaneous catheter intervention are provided.
