In the institute both fundamental and applied research are represented in the fields of particle physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics, material, earth and environmental sciences, archeology, medical and industrial technology. Be- sides research and teaching (training of students, diploma workers, PhD students and research fellows), ATOMKI shares in extended R&D activities through its laboratories, clusters and spin-off companies. Infrastructure and knowledge ATOMKI is a center of knowledge and expertise in atomic and nuclear physics and the application of their methods in material and environmental sciences. The Institute has 4 strategic infrastructures in the National Research Infrastructure Register, among others its Accelerator Centre. The wide range of international and domestic collaborations also demonstrates the competitiveness of the institute. OF THE HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (ATOMKI)

Address: Hungary, H-4026 Debrecen, Bem tér 18/cTelephone: +36 52 509 200Director: Zsolt Fülöp ([email protected])Website: www.atomki.hu

ATOMKI belongs to the re-search network of the Hun-garian Academy of Sciences and also has a contractual partner ship with several institutes and universities, among them with the Uni-versity of Debrecen, based on a long-standing coopera-tion in research and educa-tion. In the institute both funda men tal and applied research are represented in

the fi elds of particle physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics, material, earth and environmental sciences, archeology, medical and industrial technology. Be-sides research and teaching (training of students, diploma workers, PhD students and research fellows), ATOMKI shares in extended R&D activities through its laboratories, clusters and spin-off companies.

Infrastructure and knowledgeATOMKI is a center of knowledge and expertise in atomic and nuclear physics and the application of their methods in material and environmental sciences. The Institute has 4 strategic infrastructures in the National Research Infrastructure Register, among others its Accelerator Centre. The wide range of international and domestic collaborations also demonstrates the competitiveness of the institute.

ATOMKI’s main facilities and equipments:

MGC 20E cyclotron accelerator Electron Spectrometer for Chemical Analysis

5 MV and 1 MV Van de Graaff accelerators Laboratory for Environmental Studies

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source Radiochemical Laboratory

Laboratory of Ion Beam Analysis SIMS/ SNMS Laboratory

Participation in major internationally organized programs:

NOGAFLUIS (FP7-People)Mass spectrometry measurements of noble gas content in fl uid inclusions in stalagmites

ATOMKI-PPROCESS (FP7-ERC)Nuclear reaction studies relevant to the astrophysical p-process nucleo-synthesis

CHARISMA (FP7-Infrastructures)Cultural Heritage Advanced Research Infrastructures for Conservation and Restoration

ENSAR (FP7-Infrastructures)European Nuclear Science and Applications Research focusing on nuclear structure, astrophysics and nuclear science applications

COLLEXCIT (FP7-People)Study of semiconductor X- and gamma-ray detector response as a function of the band gap and plasmon

ENIAC-CSI (FP7-SME)Central Nervous System Imaging R&D for novel class of PET solid-state sensors and architecture

Innovation and clustersThe main goal of organizing the innovation activity in clusters is to ensure high quality scientifi c research and diagnostic service especially for Central European partners. ATOMKI is a member of several clusters.

Pharmapolis Debrecen Innovative Cluster (www.pharmapolis.hu) that provides preclinical services for determination of the effi cacy of drug or drug candidates. Its two project companies:

- Icono-Pharma project company and- Pharmatom project company.

Thermal Health Care Industry Cluster (www.termal-egeszsegipariklaszter.hu) is the organization of pre-clinical and clinical studies related to health care research.

Hungarian Space Cluster (www.hunspace.org) is dealing with development of space technology for components of satellites, data transfer/ evaluation and electronics.

Prizmatech (www.prizmatech.hu) Instrument Manu-facturer and Developer Cluster of Debrecen - coordi-nated by ATOMKI - collects and organizes, in network based cooperation, the market participants, companies, research institutions and higher educational institu-tions of health care, environmental and me-chatronics industry in-terested in instrumen-tal and methodological development.

Examples of major innovation achievements:

The miniPET-II: small animal PET scanner for preclinical drug studies (partners: University of Debrecen, MEDISO Ltd., Budapest University of Technology and Economics)

CardiotomTM: mobile 3D gamma camera for diagnosis of acute myocardial heart infarction (partners: Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institute, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden)
