Welcome to the Winter edition ofIMHA - On the Move It has been abusy and productive fall here at IM-HA and I hope that it has been forthe research community as well
Last month the IMHA Institute Advi-sory Board (IAB) gathered in Halifaxfor our fall IAB meeting IMHA con-tinues to hold IAB meetings in differ-ent cities in Canada to connectwith researchers at academic insti-tutions across the country We also
use the opportunity to host an outreach activity involvingresearchers and the public ndash Halifax was no exception
Whereas IMHA has been hosting Cafeacute Scientifiques dur-ing our last 9 consecutive board meetings we decidedto host an open forum on the evening following the firstday of our meeting this time About 40 Dalhousie re-searchers and representatives from our partner organiza-tions in the Halifax area attended After a presentationabout IMHA and CIHR people had the opportunity toask questions and network with one another and with
members of our board One of the main topics of conver-sation was the changes to CIHRrsquos open suite of programsand enhancements to the peer review process (pleasefollow the link to get the latest updates) We were hon-oured to have Dr Martha Crago Vice-President(Research) at Dalhousie University welcome our guestsand attend a session with the IAB the next morning Over-all it was a great opportunity for IMHA to learn about theresearch program at Dalhousie to meet some of thecommunity and to share updates from CIHR and IMHA
In funding news IMHA is pleased to announce that weare once again partnering with Muscular Dystrophy Can-ada on an Operating Grant Priority Announcement(Rachel Fund) which will provide funding for applicationsin the area of Myotonic Dystrophy The Rachel Fund is aninitiative to advance research on Myotonic Dystrophyinitiated through a donation provided by Tribute Commu-nities a generous donor to Muscular Dystrophy CanadaPlease see page 2 for new funding opportunities as wellas others with fast-approaching deadlines
Wishing you health and happiness in 2013
Sincerely

Oral health is essential for overall health and well-being Whilethe oral health of Canadians has improved dramatically overthe past 30 years many challenges remain Drs Debora Mat-thews Dennis Cvitkovitch and their team who were recentlyawarded a Network Catalyst Grant hope to address some ofthese challenges through their newly established Network forCanadian Oral Health Research
IMHA had the opportunity to hear Dr Matthews present anoverview of the network at the IAB meeting in Halifax last monthShe highlighted the networkrsquos main purposes 1) to developand support research infrastructure to facilitate collaborativeinterdisciplinary research teams and 2) to promote knowledgetransfer and translation among researchers policy makers den-tal professionals and the public
The network will link oral health researchers from ten universitiesacross Canada with the mission of
Promoting the mentoring of the next generation of oralhealth researchers
Guiding the development of sustainable infrastructure Aiding the development of interdisciplinary research teams Enabling the sharing of research-related resources Facilitating communication between and among knowl-

CIHR-supported study reveals faulty weight shift-ing as the most common cause of falls in seniors
Dr Stephen Robinovitch a CIHR-supported researcher at Simon Fraser Uni-versity has provided new evidence on how and why seniors fall Dr Robino-vitch and his colleagues used video cameras set up in two long-term carefacilities in BC to capture the falls of residents In analyzing the footagethey found that the most frequent cause of falls was incorrect weight shift-ing followed by other causes such as tripping or being bumped by some-one or a closing door This research provides new insights into how toprevent falls which are the number one cause of injury in older adults Theresults were recently published in the journal The Lancet Dr Robinovitch isa member of the advisory board of the CIHR Institute of MusculoskeletalHealth and Arthritis and principal investigator of the CIHR Team in theCause and Prevention of Falls in Residential Care
