Yes, this should be our motto!David and I attended an IAC Meeting in York recently hosted by Ivor Rose our
Chairman., to discuss just that – Moving forward and attracting new members to the IACand hence, more members for the Clubs.
With all the new technology of today it is essential we keep up with the times, bothin our filmmaking and in communications.
Several like minded people met and discussed various options, one being SocialNetworks, i.e. Face Book, Twitter etc.
SoCo is to take the suggestions of Social networks on board and hopefully re-instateour Web Site within the near future.
We all know that the Weymouth Club has been known as Weymouth Cine & VideoClub for over 56 years. Now it is time to GO FORWARD with a new name. From now onit will be known as WEYMOUTH MOVIE MAKERS. All telephone numbers will remain thesame except for our Website, which is: weymouthmoviemakers.weebly.com with ourwebsite e-mail being:
[email protected] free to contact us through the Website as it is now live, but still work in progress
for certain pages, so why not have a look!
Do you require an Entry Form? Although over the past two months Entry Forms havebeen sent to Clubs throughout the Region (did you get one)?
As we have found there is a problem with some parties not being able to openattachments. We have discovered this is a common problem with some of us usingvarious systems. To resolve this, lift the phone and give me a ring on: 01305 780140 orE-mail: [email protected]
The Closing Date for the Competition is Friday 22ⁿ August, so start sending yourentries in NOW!
THE SOCO AGM 2014 will be held prior to the Show at the same venue starting12.30pm. to which all are welcome.
Here in Weymouth at the moment we are enjoying what one would call “raresummer sunshine” and Weymouth Club members are out and about with their camerasfilming for those autumn productions as well as a major club production – more aboutthat later – watch the Website!
Happy Filming! And Remember Just Ring or E-Mail for that SOCO ENTRY FORM.Anne.
I was chuffed to be asked by foreigner (from outsidethe SoCo area) Frank Parker if I could do some filming fora film he is making regarding Oak Apple Day. An event thatcommemorates an historical event performed on thesame day in different parts of the country.
As he was filming elsewhere, I was tasked to go StNeot and film. A branch of Oak Apple is carried throughthe village and is hoisted up the church tower where itstays until the following year.
Frank had visited the organisers and provided detailednotes of what he would like filmed, together with a handdrawn map of the village. I visited the village, courtesy ofGoogle Maps, and “wandered” round to see for my self.
On the appointed day, I went with my wife, Sue, tofilm the requested footage. I placed a radio mic on theman who was to do the “historical talk” recording on onechannel whilst using an onboard mic to record theambient noise on the second channel.
Events did not go exactly as we had been briefed so Ihad to film what I could and hope I had not missedanything important. With only one camera getting a rangeof action shots, a collection of cut aways and otherinteresting happenings certainly kept me on my toes.
I won’t include any screen shots from the event asFrank has not yet released the film which will be used, amongst other things, to act as an archive of the event.
Later this week I’ll be sixty. And I know that will comeas a shock to many of you as you thought I was a lot olderthan that. Even I had to check my birth certificate, writtenwith a quill I believe.
I made up a spoof, This Is Your Life programme with aslight twist. Nobody, but nobody has a nice word to sayabout me. I had great fun writing and getting friends andfamily to record the inserts (or should I say insult) whichwill be presented at my birthday bash as part of a showperformed by The All Star Theatre Company.
I’ve talked of this group before; a company ofentertainers with Learning Disabilities who performvariety shows throughout the year.
I’m proud to be associated with them and lend mysupport by providing sound, lighting and video services tohelp present their shows in the best way possible.
We have just finished making a film entitled “HelpThem To Help You”. A self help film made by adults withLearning Disabilities for adults with Learning Disabilities.
The project has taken well over a year from the initialidea to final film release. The concept was to find out whatdifficulties they have through drama workshops then toreenact ways to overcome the difficulties.
It’s really comforting and reassuring just howsupportive people are when they know the Content,Audience and Purpose. We gained permission to film in allmanner of places that one may think off limits.
We filmed in police stations, police and council callcentres, civic centre buildings, a swimming pool, anarchery club, retail establishments and at support centres.
Everyone we had dealings with where so supportiveand generous with their time.
The call centres where the most difficult to achieve;we could not script anything as their actors would not beable to memorise lines and deliver them over and overagain. Neither had the call centre staff acted before andwhere quite nervous themselves.
I overcame the problem by taking the LearningDisabled actors to the call centre and sitting them out ofshot of the call handler. We then faked the phone call withthe call handlers desperately trying not to make eyecontact with them; which is of course the social norm.
About a year later, we filmed the other side of theconversation; the actors sat in their own homes makingthe phone call reacting to me reading what the callhandler had said and advising the actors what theyneeded to say.
Sounds complicated and it was to some extent.Getting the actors to respond as they had done previouslytook several takes.
Then in post production the two films where editedtogether to give the appearance of two cameras in twoplaces at the same time. Ah, the tricks of the trade!
The film has now been released on DVD and theInternet. The YouTube version has several advantages:it’s in high definition as opposed the the standarddefinition DVD; it can be seen almost anywhere in theworld; it’s very easy just to watch the section of interestto you; it’s absolutely free; you can send links to anyoneyou want free and it helps to promote the organisationsthat supported us.
If you have time, take a look. There is a play list here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jfbG5MTh0s&i

Hi Pip,You may be already aware of a problematic free
software download called FLVconverter.comI know the general advice is to be cautious with
freeware but I downloaded this to sort a quick problemand Avast took it's time chucking it out. Specifically whatfor I know not. Worth a mention in the local bulletin?

Hi PipI trawled through the 23 pages.Re the lead article about the late Oswald Morris -
chewing up film was not confined to amateurs.I was sat round a table having dinner one evening in
the Methodist residential youth hostel, Muswell Hill, north London, when in comes a lad who worked at the ITNpreview theatre.
"I've just graunched the first 5 minutes of ' Route 66Sunset Strip' - the viewers will never see it!".
We chuckled and just got stuck into the food. What it is to be young and foolish. Working with
another resident who had more sense - later a successfulprofessional cameraman - was where I first learned theart of adding sound to film.

CLUBSCLUBS The end of another successful season at Reading, andtwo of last year's new intake to our Beginners Course, now joined the committee. Rob and Vijay are both early30's, so it's wonderful to have new young blood involved.(see committee photo)
They have taken on the responsibility for nextseason's programme, so we are looking forward to somefresh ideas.
Before I stepped down from the programme co-ordinator's role, I had planted a few seeds to bookspeakers for next season. One film maker we were keento book was Philip Bloom.
After 17 years working innews covering the world'sbiggest stories, he launchedhis own company in 2006.One documentary he filmedpicked up numerous awardsand also a BAFTA.
http://philipbloom.net/
Philip's fee is howevermore than we, or indeedmost clubs, would normallybe able to afford so we came
up with the idea of inviting other local clubs and indeedanyone who is interested, to join us at Reading on theevening of Tuesday 18th November.
We have a large hall available, and the cost of £10 perhead will include refreshments. Philip will share his variedexperience with us, introductions to his films, a selectionof films, and also a Q&A session. It promises to be a greatevening .
So, if you are in travelling distance of Reading or evenif you might consider doing a stop-over, do email our clubsecretary to book your ticket in advance, using "PhilipBloom" as your subject.
[email protected] of you who are IAC members may have spotted
the full page article on page 14 of the June edition, writtenby Laurie Joyce, on the subject of attracting newmembers.
Laurie is once again looking forward to running hisexcellent beginners course which he improves year onyear, and is certainly a proven success to attract newmembers. Copies of Laurie's 26 page A5 booklet toaccompany the course, are available to order at £5 each, plus postage. (Due to copyright restrictions of certainimages, these cannot be duplicated, so do order enough ,and postage costs will be advised accordingly). Enquiriesto our club secretary, as above.

CLUBSCLUBS This Unit was founded by two of us, “refugees”, fromthe previous self imploded Stroud Video Makers.
So we play things close to our chest as it were andmembership is only open “by selected invitation”
as a result! We are specifically open to Young People.A further result of certain spurious comments from acertain element in the IAC in 2012, caused all our youngermembers to reject the IAC and they continue to do so!
So after quite a long time, it has been agreed that thisshort report can be written. Myself, I continue with myediting and post production class, each entry is limited toa small number by a “hat vote”, of necessity.
Currently the latest production is loosely based uponand adapted from a fairly recent factual occurrence whichwas reported to the police at the time.
The working title is “Ghost” but will be changed. Thestory line by myself is quite true. The script, with somechanges, is by Mike Szewzcuk.
Although a Joint Production we, of course, followedour Unit’s policy of involving young people.
Our youngest (‘Teen)actor is 12 years old BradChristy and introduces himto the vagaries of filmmaking!
Ry. aged 17, is fastbecoming a “veteran”, thisbeing the third production inwhich he has appeared!
The arranged shoot on aprivate estate of a friend ofmine took place through a
weekend in May which proved, by some “miracle”, to bethe only completely sunny weekend.
The others before andafterwards were quite wetand muddy. Perhaps ournow unseen “friend” helpedus. Certainly someone “upthere” was looking out forus!
It’s a simple story simplytold with Mike’s usual flairfor the “bizarre”! It’s all nowundergoing editing and Iwon’t enlighten you at this
stage. Might give you Daymares, night time would be adefinite matter!

A Mark Up on the Marx Bros’
Worry not this is not a piece of Marxist politicalpropaganda. So fellow vintage ratio “Aspecters” of 4:3 doread on and of course, the more Studentae and thoselooking forward to retirement also. (The world was notalways 16.9 / Widescreen)!
Harking back to the days when comedy was funny allyou of respectable “Vintage” will, hopefully, rememberthe films made by the Marx Brothers. No doubt the three,Chico, Harpo and Groucho.
Actually there were five brothers the other two beingGummo and Zeppo. These latter two having left theiroriginal Vaudeville act did not achieve the fame resultingfrom former three’s transfer to film and resulting inworldwide cinema audiences. In the beginning there weresix brothers but Manfred, the first, born in 1886 lived foronly three months succumbing to T.B. His grave is in theWashington Cemetery, New York.
Their parents were Jewish immigrants and lived in therun down slums of New York’s East Side, (Yorkville), whichno doubt was a contributory factor in the infant’s death atthree months of age. Their father was from Alsace andworked as a Tailor. Their mother was from East Frisia.
The brother’s family were also Artistes and theirmusical talents were much encouraged. Harpo wasextremely talented learning to play six differentinstruments to a high degree. He became dedicated to theHarp, hence his stage name, Harpo. Chico became apianist whilst Groucho was a talented guitarist and singer.
They first started professionally in Vaudeville, as theiruncle, Al Shean, was a performer, half of an Act calledGallagher and Shean. Groucho’s debut was in 1905 as asinger. From 1907 he and Gummo sang with MabelO’Donnell in “The Three Nightingales”. Later Harpobecame Nightingale number four!
Chico, Harpo and Groucho as a family comedy actenjoyed great success in Vaudeville, on Broadway and infilms from 1905 to 1949. Five of their thirteen full featurefilms were chosen by the American Film Institute beingamongst the top 100 comedy films with “Duck Soup” and“A Night At The Opera” in the top twelve. The brothers arealso included in the AFI’s “100 Years – 100 Stars List” ofthe most significant screen legends, the only group ofperformers collectively chosen.
Chico, Harpo and Groucho each developed highlydistinctive personas. The two younger brothers Gummoand Zeppo left. Gummo fought in WW1. Together botheventually became the biggest Agency in Hollywood.Gummo was never in any of the films whilst Zeppoappeared in the first three as a “straightman”. He was alsogifted in that he could imitate any of the other three andactually impersonated Groucho in the scene involving theBeauguard Painting in “Animal Crackers” when Grouchowas unable to perform.
Under Chico’s management and Groucho’s creativedirection they became Broadway Stars in “I’ll Say She Is”in 1924 / 1925 and two musical comedies, “TheCocoanuts” 1925 /1926 and again in “Animal Crackers”1928/1929.
Out of costumes the three looked very much alike. Ascene in “Duck Soup” sees Groucho, Harpo and Chico allappearing in greasepaint - eyebrows, moustaches, roundglasses wearing nightcaps quite indistinguishable, enabling them to carry through the “mirror scene”.
The Marx Brothers became popular just as motionpictures changed to “Talkies”. They signed a contract withParamount The first two films released were “TheCocoanuts” 1929 and “Animal Crackers” 1930. Their thirdfilm “Monkey Business” 1931 – the only film in whichHarpo is ever heard, in this case singing! Their 1932 film“Horsefeathers” took/takes the “mickey” out of theAmerican College System. Later their film “Prohibition”saw them featured on the front cover of “Time Magazine”!
The Marx Brothers last film for Paramount was “DuckSoup” 1933. It was the sixth highest earner behind“Horsefeathers”.
They then contracted with MGM with Irving Thalbergwho improved story structure and brought out Harpo’sharp solos and also Chico’s piano solos – remember thatleft hand first finger pointing and running along thekeyboard – “plonk”?
Their first MGM flm with Thalberg was “A Night At TheOpera” 1935. It was a “hit” followed in 1937 with a biggerone “A Day At The Races” . Unfortunately Thalberg died, suddenly and MGM strangely, “chopped” their contract!
They then made one film for RKO “Room Service”1938 and were then “reinstated” by MGM with the film“At The Circus” 1939,
“Go West” in 1940 and “The Big Store” in 1941. TheMarx Brothers then retired. However, Chico got them tomake two more films: “A Night In Casablanca” 1946 and“Love Happy” 1949 both released by United Artists.
Throughout the 1940s and onwards Harpo and Chicoappeared in Night Clubs and Casinos. Chico also fronted abig band called The Chico Marx Orchestra - introducing avocalist, 17 years old Mel Tormé!
Groucho began a solo career with “You Bet Your Life”from 1947 to 1961 on NBC TV and Radio. He also wrote anumber of books such as: “Groucho and Me”, “Memoirsof a Mangy Lover” and “The Groucho Letters”.
They all continued together from time to time on TV.On January 16 1977, The Marx Brothers were inductedinto The Motion Picture Hall of Fame.
Over the years many TV shows, “Personalities”, havepurloined many of their jokes. There are also at least 45books about The Marx brothers!

Calne's History
Recently I’ve been carrying on with my project ofmaking short videos of the various works of art around mytown of Calne. I’ve done seven up till now and plentymore to go.
The original intention was to make one long record ofthem all but, thinking about it, I decided that very shortfilms of each was the best in the end.
I appreciate that these may not be of major interest ifyou are not from the area but here are links to a couple.
I may inflict a few more of them on you in futureissues of Soco News.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw-O8gNmcAU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHydqZwjmJg
They really explain themselves so there is little pointin telling you more about them.
It’s interesting that until I started to look into ourpublic works of art I wasn’t aware of the many interestingitems around. It’s hoped that these videos will make thetown’s residents and visitors more conscious of them.
One of the reasons forshowing them to you is to pointout that, wherever you live, therewill almost certainly be similarattractions worth recording.
Remember, what ever you dowill be a worthwhile video recordfor your home area. Now thesummer is here why not get outand about with your videocamera and make some shortrecords of your local attractions.
The local library will be agood starting point for information. Let’s see some of yourresults in the next issue of this magazine.

IMAX - Who Invented it ?Well, once more, we find there's some "history" that
preceded the first commercial success of an invention. And, pioneering contributors, sometimes are forgotten.IMAX is another case in point.
But first, let me dig into the "history" of old Dave'searly childhood years. We were brought up on a sugar-cane farm, in the 1930's depression, towards the end ofthe "horse era" in a strict German Lutheran churchenvironment - no sports, no booze, no dancing, but - I wasallowed one social luxury. If I carted manure from thehorse stalls on Saturday morning, for the family garden, Icould go to the Saturday afternoon matinee movies andsit with the boys in the front canvas bleachers, horse-playing with buddies, punching, pushing, wrestling, talking loudly - waiting for the Anthem to announce thestart of the Show. The "dames" of my age sat at a discreet, respectable distance well behind "that disgusting uncouthbehaviour" in the front bleachers. The boys' racket quicklysubsided and on came some cartoons, a Pete SmithSpecialty, a travel movie (impatient noise level rising), andfinally the main course: Hopalong Cassidy, white hats andblack hats, a lot of horse-flesh, much cheering ,only asmall band of "dames" featured in the plot, then into thechases, gunplay & fights.
As the wounded and dead disappeared from viewafter the first melee, it was time to put into the moviesome female interest. Romantic interchanges, a song tothe plonkety-plonks of a "geetah" - and a dramaticincrease in the horse-play, punching and racket amongthe bleachers all through the "love muck". Back to thegunplay and the horse opera continued. Hearts beating inthe front rows. "Look out, Hopalong, he's got a gun!"
I'd made up my mind about my life's career. I'd be amovie-maker and produce westerns!
By an odd quirk of fate, agood buddy of mine hadinherited a hand-cranked toy35mm movie projector and abox of old silent movies on 400ft. reels. He allowed me to takeit all home. Yair, I'm getting tothe point of IMAX. Patience, please. The odd thing about my"baby" was that the film wasdrawn down to the film - gateby a "beater." No claw, no
intermittent sprocket. There was a wooden handle whichwhen rotated, through its crude "gear-box", sped the filmframe by frame through the gate at about 16 fps. Themovies were all watchable, but the images jumpedaround as the film imprecisely stuttered along, draggedimperfectly by the beater. OK, OK, patience, please.
A theatre movie was exhibited many times beforeeach print was pensioned off and placed in its retirementhome. Because each "pull-down" of each film framerequired a steel "claw" or sprocket teeth physically to"lean on the bottom" of film perforations, by the time theprint was retired, the sprocket holes had wore down. Theimage on the screen, thus, had become unsteady.
[Footnote: An 8mm Bolex projector, the M8, featureda claw that pulled each film frame down, but at the end ofeach pull, its cams lifted the claw almost imperceptibly
upwards, so that it didn't wear away at the sprocket holesas it withdrew. Betcha you didn't know about that memoirof the "sprocket era."]
Back to the "beater" thingee on my toy projector. Thebeater caught each frame on the sprocket holes edges ofthe film, not into the holes themselves, and the beaterpulled the film down frame by frame at a rapid rate. Nowearing away at the bottom of sprocket holes. In my toyprojector, wearing away the sprocket holes was of noconsequence. The "beater" was an inexpensive means oftransporting the film. And this kind of film transport, mypatient friends, leads to IMAX.
A guy in Europe had apparently adapted my toybeater with heavy-duty engineering to a 35mm projectorused in cinemas. But he didn't patent it. A fella, namedJones, in Brisbane used this adaptation and did patent it.
Three dudes from Toronto arrived in Brisbane to seeJones' machine and have a friendly chat with him.Canadians. An engineer, a financier and a promoter. Jonessold the three wise men his patent for $10,000. Jonesshowed movies in a Brisbane cinema, but he couldn't seeany other financial future for his invention. Unknown toJones, the dream that the Canadians pursued was to showtheir IMAX movies on a huge screen, several storeys high.Impact, as if the audience was actually immersed in theplace featured in the IMAX movie. Viewers looked up anddown and sideways, actually turning their heads.Umpteen tracks of audio added an " ambient presence ofreality" to the show.
So the IMAX team visited Eastman Kodak atRochester, New York State, just across the other side ofLake Ontario, to see if Eastman could supply a wide-gaugefilm. "Yes, in stock. Negative, print stock, processing. Wecan supply you with 70mm film. "Well, boys, we'll have togo that route. A 35mm frame magnified to storey's highwill have grain the size of golf balls. " Each 35mm framemeasured 1 inch by 3/4's of an inch. A 70mm framemeasured 3 ins. by 2 ins. You do the math.
Next step. The engineering team designed and builtan up-scaled version of Jones' 35mm machine so it'd showthe 70mm film. The film frame lay horizontally. And theydesigned an IMAX camera using 70mm film. The team fedsome work-print 70mm IMAX film through the up-scaled70mm projector. Pieces of film flew across the room. Tornto shreds. They called it "The Windmill". A chaff-cutter.Back to the drawing boards.
The film base of 70mm film was too fragile towithstand the stress on the film, even with Jones' "loop"adaptation. Now, using 70mm film, with an acetate basethe same thickness as that in 35mm film, the film had toaccelerate and decelerate at a much faster rate. Even withthe "magic loop" system of transport, the stress provedjust too much. Substantial engineering improvementswere added to both projector and camera. One innovativedesign feature was the use of "suction cups" whichsteadied the film-flow, rock steady, to project each frame.
The camera consumed film at about six feet a second.(for old stills camera folk, that's about two rolls of 120 filmper second.) And at the projector in the theater projectionbox, the film was fed from a flat-bed core some three orfour feet wide, each frame lit by a very powerful Xenonlamp. One early IMAX title, "Niagara", first screened at theNiagara Falls IMAX theater.
Who invented IMAX ? The maker of my toy 35mmprojector, Jones in Brisbane or the three wise men fromToronto?

It is a wonder that Heath Robinson did not come upwith this one. Note that it was not designed for“Champers”, just those who drink good old Merlot plonk!
