Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC

1. Go to this NCR website to find the tool:

http://www5.ncr.com/support/support_drivers_patches.asp?Class=retail_RealScan

It is nearly half-way down the page, it looks like this:

NCR scanners do not support flash drivesthat are 16 Gigabytes or larger.

Please use a small-capacity device.

When you first start up the utility, you will be told if you do not already have a flash drive installed in the PC you are using to set it up. Plug the drive in, and the program will automatically detect it for you.

Once you plug one in, or if it sees one already inserted, then it will verify which one (if more than one) is to be used.

Click on submit if the one shown is OK.

You may get this message if you’ve used your flash drive to flash other scanners:

Page 9: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

You have to check the box under “Enter filename” AND enter the binary firmware flash file to be flashed into the scanner. There is a browse button to the right of the “Enter filename” box if the desired file is not displayed in the pull-down menu.

11. The utility will then show pictures of the different PXA scanners that have the USB Host Flash Drive, 7878, 7874, 7884, and 7893. Choose the scanner type you will need to clone or otherwise work with by clicking on the pull-down menu. You CAN prep the drive for all three scanner types, just in case. Go to each scanner type tab, and click the desired function for each model. Pictures for each scanner type are shown below.

Make sure you check the Parameters and/or Firmware options on that page because if you just click on Target Scanner and don’t tell the program how to prep the drive, then when you click the Prep Flash Drive button, the default operation is to do NOTHING!

Page 10: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

Page 12: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

The browse function will show you all the scanner-specific flash files in the chosen subdirectory, but if you choose a flash file for a different model of scanner than what the Target Scanner is, then you will get an error message:

This config screen will go gray and a warning will pop up if you unplug the flash drive at this point (or any point prior to being told to by the application):

Once you reconnect the flash drive, the application will start over from the very beginning again.

12. When you have selected the desired file name, or have finished choosing whatever function you need to perform, click on the Prep Flash Drive button. It will inform you when the operation is complete, and the flash drive is ready to be plugged into the scanner.

The flash drive detached box will pop up when you pull out the flash drive. That is OK.

NOTE: If you do NOT get the three-descending tones from the scanner when you remove the flash drive after reflashing, chances are you just flashed OLDER firmware into the scanner than what supports flash drive capability.

** INFORMATION **The reason you can prep all of our scanners at one time is that in the .ini file this program generates, it assigns a different number to each scanner type. A sample ini file is here:

Clone Mode

You can ‘clone’ any 7878/7874/7884/7893/7812/7879 scanner. For example, say your customer has both 7878’s and 7884’s, and you arrive to change the digital board in one of each of them. You can do this easily by running the Flash Drive Prep program and clicking on the Clone/Memory Dump tab.

You’ll be given a choice whether to clone firmware, the EEPROM (program parameters) or both.

As soon as you check the button saying you want to clone a unit’s EEPROM, you will get this warning message:

Click “OK”.

If you want to clone the firmware too, the message will come up again.

This Clone/Memory Dump section is active for all scanner types (787x) until it is turned off. That is, if you click either Firmware or EEPROM (or both) in the Scanner Cloning box, then this is what is done with EVERY UNIT, regardless of Class/Model, and any settings done in the Parameter section are ignored.

Page 16: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

Note that if you forget you set ‘clone’ on your flash drive and later plug it into a scanner, the clone process will begin immediately. You might want to mark your flash drive as “clone” or something similar so no accidents happen.

Page 17: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

Now, you must choose a “gold” 7878, 7874, 7884, 7893, 7812 and/or 7879 to use as the ‘master’ (unit to be cloned). When you plug the flash drive into the 7878 (for example) to be cloned, there will be a series of three ascending tones FROM THE SCANNER, and it will upload the firmware and/or EEPROM image into the flash drive automatically, and assign them file names based on the serial number of the scanner that was cloned. You can then go to another class of scanner, say 7884, and it will upload its firmware and/or EEPROM image into the flash drive without affecting the 787x clone information.

The scanner will give you a series of three of the SAME tones when it is done with the flash drive. Then you can remove it, and the scanner will give you a series of descending tones, just like what happens when you plug the flash drive into a PC.

Once it knows you have the “gold” image on the flash drive, you can go to any of the matching scanner class units in the store, in any order, and reflash them. The date the scanner assigns to the uploaded file in the subdirectory will be the build date, that date which is shown on the 7827 remote display when scale zero is pressed.

Note, 7878 ONLY, It is possible to accidentally remove the ability to flash via the thumb drive if you force a reflash of old firmware onto newer-resident firmware that supports this capability. The Released 7878 GCA firmware does NOT have this flash drive (USB Host) capability, so don’t flash GCA firmware over something newer!

The 7878 has four USB host drives. The 7874, 7884, 7812, and 7893 each have one. There are four on the 7879, as well.

The scanner firmware warns you when you are about to reflash firmware onto it.It will say “Load Program in 3 seconds…2…1…0…”, and then flashing will occur. This gives you time to remove the flash drive if you plugged it in erroneously.

The light bar on the 7874 is vertical. The light bars on the 7878 and 7884 are horizontal. The “pivot” point is on the upper-right of the 7874. That is, the bottom LED on the 7874 is the left-most LED on the 7878 and 7884.

Uploading the firmware FROM the flash drive TO the scanner will look like the LEDs going upward on a 7874. Downloading the firmware FROM the 7874 TO the flash drive looks like the LEDs going downward. Remember the pivot point for the 7884/7878!

On the 7879, the bezel sides will be pink, and pink LEDs will march across the top as flashing continues.

Additional details about the clone process: How does it know to push parameters into a scanner instead of pull them out?

The flashdrive.ini file will contain only the "Y" at the end, it says: [CLONE]fw_clone=Neeuser_clone=Y

Important: In the file names below, substitute the “xxxx” for the model of the scanner currently being cloned. For example, xxxx.clone , xxxx_fw_clone.bin  , and xxxx_eeuser_clone.bin will actually be 7878.clone, 7878_fw_clone.bin, and 7878 eeuser_clone.bin if you’re working with a 7878. What happens is that when you plug it into the scanner, it knows whether to put something ON the flash drive or pull something OFF the flash drive depending on whether a special file is already there. When you plug it into the first scanner, it see's the "Y" and then creates a file called xxxx.clone also on the flash drive with the ini file along with the kind of file you put the Y next to.  Just having that file tells the scanner to be the one to pull parameters or firmware off the flash drive.

When you plug the flash drive into the second scanner, it sees the xxxx.clone file and knows to pull the parameters out. If you wanted just the parameters, you will have  xxxx.clone  and xxxx_eeuser_clone.bin after plugging the flash drive into the "gold" scanner. If you wanted just the firmware and no eeprom, you would have  xxxx.clone  and xxxx_fw_clone.bin after plugging the flash drive into the "gold" scanner. If you wanted BOTH firmware and eeprom, all three files,  xxxx.clone, xxxx_fw_clone.bin  , and xxxx_eeuser_clone.bin would be on your flash drive after plugging the flash drive into the "gold" scanner. In summary: xxxx_eeuser_clone.bin  will contain the "gold unit" eeprom parameters.xxxx_fw_clone.bin   will contain the "gold unit" firmware.

Advanced Feature: Dump Memory

This is for diagnostic purposes only. There are no user-interpretable or user-changeable values in this file.

To produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump:

Click on Prep Flash Drive

Once complete, this message will pop up on the computer:

Page 20: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

Remove the drive from the PC (no need to click on the “safely remove hardware” icon in the system tray).

When you remove the drive, you will get a warning message:

That is expected.

When you insert the drive in the scanner’s host USB port, the scanner will make a three ascending tone sound to indicate it has detected the flash drive.

There is be 15 seconds of silence - there will be no LEDs on the scanner or sounds from the scanner until the dump process is complete. When complete, the scanner will produce a quick steady-state triple beep sound. You can pull the drive out any time after that, and the scanner will make a three descending tone sound to indicate removal.

The file created will look something like this:“7878_xxxxxxxx.dmp”, Where7878 is the scanner class number; xxxxxxxx is the unique serial number.

Note: The date of the file corresponds to the date of the FIRMWARE BUILD. The scanner does NOT have a real-time clock, so the date will NOT reflect the date of the dump.

What happens if you don’t have your laptop with you when you have to fix a scanner (replace a board, etc)?

The scanner has some programming sequences that let you clone a unit if you did not get a chance to run the Flash Drive Prep before going to the store.1

HOWEVER YOU MUST HAVE PROGRAMMING TAGS!

1. Buy a fresh flash drive at the store you’re in, or pick one up before going to the store to work on the scanner. Do NOT insert it into the scanner yet.

2. Go to GOOD SCANNER, the one you want to clone FROM.

3. Use one of these three sequences to set up the newly-purchased flash drive (SCAN&RESET not needed)

PROGRAM MODEHEX 7HEX FHEX C ;This will clone Firmware AND parameters

---or---

PROGRAM MODEHEX 7HEX FHEX D ;This will clone Firmware only

---or---

PROGRAM MODEHEX 7HEX FHEX E ;This will clone Parameters only

The scanner will speak:

“Attach USB flash drive”

1 If the scanner sounds an error tone, then the scanner has an early version of firmware and the user should use the Flash Prep Application to configure the flash drive.

Page 22: Installing the Flash Drive Prep Program on your PC€¦  · Web viewTo produce a memory dump, go to the “Clone/Memory Dump” screen, and click on the button for Memory Dump: Click

You must insert the flash drive immediately after completing the programming sequence. If you do NOT insert the drive within ten seconds, the scanner will produce a Bad Tone, and speak “Program Tag Error!” You will need to either reset the unit or scan Abort.

Once inserted, the scanner will speak again after it produces a series of three ascending tones:

“Load Program In three seconds…Two …One…Zero…

Scanner will go into flash mode by itself (motor shuts down, Light bar turns Pink), and will produce a series of tones, ending with a set of three steady-state tones indicating the process is complete. You can remove the flash drive now.

IMPORTANT: Programming the scanner for clone operation via barcodes supersedes any previous setup done either with scanner programming tags or with the flash utility.

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: You must insert the flash drive AFTER scanning in the programming sequence. If you insert the flash drive first, then it will carry out any pre-existing directives already programmed into it from a previous use.
