Making Friends of Enemies
A fight recently broke out in the car between our two grandchildren. As the older brother struggled to cope
with the tension, his five-year-old sibling calmly summarized their relationship with the wisdom of a
sage: “You and I are ‘frienemies.’” This is the dilemma of human history that has always been torn between the conflicting impulses of enmity
and amity, war and peace, competition and cooperation. In the midst of world wars, corporate
rivalries, and family feuds, Jesus comes as mediator to remind us that we are destined for a new
relationship as adopted children of God. Baptism forms a spiritual bond in Christ that transforms even natural born enemies into sisters and brothers in the
one family of God.
ON THE ROAD From the time they were called by Jesus, the disciples led a wandering life. They must have watched closely as he preached to crowds both large and small, cured the sick, and forgave sins. He also spent time teaching them in private, but they did not always understand what he was telling them. You might think the disciples did not know enough to be trusted to act on Jesus’ behalf. We hear today, however, that Jesus did send them out, but
with special instructions. First, they had to travel in teams of two. Second, they were to travel light, wearing a stout pair of sandals and
without a single extra item of baggage to slow them down. Third, they were to accept whatever accommodation was offered them, and not go looking for something better. Finally, they were not to force their attentions on the unwilling, but instead to move on to the next place. So ready or not, willing or not,
excited or nervous, they set off in teams to do the work of healing, forgiving, and teaching. On the road of life we also follow as disciples of the Lord, we do better when we work with other people. We can pray in private, read our Bible alone, follow particular devotions on our own, and these are all good for building up our spiritual life, but our faith only flowers when we share it in the community. Parishes rely on
groups of committed people to serve. Some ministries serve other parishioners, such as ministries of the altar, wedding and bereavement ministries, and religious faith formation. Others serve people in the wider
community, such as RCIA teams, returning Catholics committees, evangelization groups, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, community blood drives, or Habitat for Humanity. Join a ministry and live a fuller life!

LEAVE THE HEAVY BAGGAGE BEHIND
In today’s Gospel, when Jesus sends the disciples out two by two, he orders them to take
nothing for their journey. No bread, no bag and no money for their belts. Jesus’ “no bag” instruction sounds very wise if we’re flying. If you check four or more bags you’ll likely be paying up to $100 each. But perhaps Jesus is speaking of a heavier kind of baggage that we need to leave behind if we are going to follow him. That heavy bag is fear. It
is packed with images of being unqualified, fears of not being able to perform, of not knowing
what to say or do, fear of being rejected and the ultimate, humiliating image of failure.
Leave that heavy bag of fear at home and “fly free.”

A Mom picked up her five year old daughter after Religion Class. On the way home she asked the little girl what the lesson had been
about. Her daughter replied, “Don’t be scared, you’ll get your quilt.”
Needless to say the Mom was perplexed, but said nothing.
The following Sunday, she ran into the teacher on her way to Mass and asked what they had studied the previous week in religion class.
The teacher replied: “Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming.”
