The UniversityThe University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, founded
in 1886, combines the advantages of a strong pri-vate tradition with those of a state-assisted insti-tution. With an enrollment of more than 8,600
students, UTC is a vibrant, comprehensive, met-ropolitan university with curricula that combine
strong grounding in the liberal arts with the appliedprofessional programs essential to the economic vitali-
ty of the region.
Bachelor’s, master’s, selected doctoral, and post-graduatedegrees are awarded through our Colleges of Arts andSciences; Business; Engineering and Computer Science;and Health, Education and Professional Studies; and theUTC Graduate School.
In 2003, UTC implemented its first doctorate in physicaltherapy. Since that time, the campus has added a Ph.D. incomputational engineering and an Ed.D. in learning andleadership.
Stretching beyond the traditional classroom, UTC encom-passes the entire area as a learning laboratory, and studentshave a variety of opportunities for experiential learning.
UTC faculty, staff, and students are proud of these and otherrecent achievements:
• Computing power of the UTC SimCenter ranks 90th in the world and supports the research center’s Internet2 connection.
• The Probasco Chair hosts internationally recognized economists on campus for public lectures.
• Project REEL, a $3.6 million federally funded grant, isallowing UTC education faculty members to establish astatewide center specializing in early childhood education.
• Research projects underway on campus range from thedevelopment of a disease resistant American chestnut treeto ways to reduce wind drag on tractor trailors.
The campus is assisted in its academic mission by theUniversity of Chattanooga Foundation Inc. With an endowment that exceeds $100 million, the foundation supports scholarships, professorships, and academic enhancement programs.
As UTC looks to its future and the emerging needs of themetropolitan region, it will continue its commitment to quali-ty education, excellent research, and dedicated service.

I hear the millwheel, tique tique taqueMy father is having a house built. It’s being built with three gables. There are three carpenters building it.The youngest is my darling
What do you have in your apron? It’s a pie made of three pigeons.Let’s sit down and eat it.
While sitting down they all lept up,Causing the sea and fish to tremble,And the stones on the bottom of the sea.
Alma MaterLyrics by Elizabeth HullihenPerformed by The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chamber Singers
Lookout Mountain o’er us guardingCeaseless watch doth keep.In the valley stands our collegeWhere the shadows creep.
Chattanooga, ChattanoogaLoud the anthem swell;Sing, O Sing of Alma Mater,All her praises tell.

Academic RegaliaThe mortarboard, or Oxford Cap, was introduced in the 1890s andconsists of a closely fitting headpiece with a flat, square top. Thecode allowed for one exception: a soft cap that may be worn bywomen.
Black tassels may be used for any degree. Gold metallic tassels arereserved for doctors and governing officials. Some institutions, including UTC, use gold tassels to represent undergraduate honors.
Academic robes are usually black. The bachelor’s degree holder’sgown is simply constructed in straight lines. Its only distinguishingcharacteristics are long, pointed sleeves. Until 1960, master’s degreeholders’ gowns came with long, full sleeves and slits at the elbows. After 1960, sleeves dropped to the wrist, allowing men to foregowearing coats underneath the robe. Doctoral degree holders’ robesare adorned with velvet panels on the front and the neck, and threebars of velvet at the bell-shaped sleeves.
Academic regalia had its beginnings in medieval Europe, where cler-gymen draped themselves in heavy caps, gowns, and robes forwarmth in unheated buildings. In those days, schools were operatedby the church, and the priests served as teachers. Church fashion, then, became scholarly fashion.
When education and religion began to follow different paths, muchof the pomp and circumstance of the church was retained in aca-demic ceremonies. Each school developed its own commencementand a different wardrobe for its faculty and students.
Europeans brought their popular traditions to the New World, and in1643 America experienced its first commencement at HarvardUniversity.
To avoid confusion in color and style of academic clothing, represen-tatives from most American universities met in 1895 to consider auniform code for academic costume. The result was the AcademicCostume Code, which is still in effect today. About 98 percent ofAmerican institutions adopted the code.
The code covers three main areas of academic regalia—caps, gownsand hoods.
Chancellor’s Chain of Office
The University Mace and Chancellor’sChain of Office are significant icons ofthe institution and stand as impressivesymbols on permanent display in theLupton Library when not in service.
Creation of the mace and chain wascommissioned to New York artist andprofessor of silversmithing at StateUniversity of New York Kurt J. Masdorfin 1977.
The University Mace and Chancellor’sChain of Office are emblazoned with theinstitution’s name along with symbols ofTennessee, the state whose citizens weserve. Borrowing from ancient traditions, these hand-crafted ceremonial piecescreate interest and respect by both par-ticipants and observers. They havebecome important representations hon-oring and identifying our educationalpersonage.
