CAL FIRE M150R; BK KNG Mobile Radio SOP - Standard Operating Procedure for M150R Installation

Objectives: 1) Determine the location for the Installation of the KMB-9 mounting tray for the RF Deck 2) Establish procedure for the 12VDC power connection wiring of the KNG M150R mobile radio RF Deck and Remote Control Head, defining wiring configuration step-by-step for “Ignition Sense” 3) Installation of Remote Control Head RCH.

“Ignition Sense”

1) KMB-9 Mounting tray:

Install the M150R RF deck into existing Kenwood radio KMB-9 if applicable. If not, install KMB-9 in

the proper location as necessary. i.e. back side of front passenger seat storage box. See below picture:

orientation is so that future firmware/code plug updates are possible via Mic port & USB port.

When replacing a KENWOOD radio with the new KNG M150R, Remove the KCH-11, face plate, RF deck, KSA-1, remote cable & power cable. EXCEPTION: DO NOT discard the KLF-2 Noise Filter, KMB-9 mounting tray, and KES-5 speaker. These items are suitable to be reused with the KNG M150R.

KMB-9 mounting tray, new install Mount the KMB-9 in a place that is accessible to the PSC Radio Tech for programming

of future code plugs & firmware updates. The RF Deck orientation is important. Make it easy

to remove RF Deck from KMB-9 with service loops of all wiring/coax cable.

The Orientation required is so that the USB & Mic ports are easily accessible for Cloning and

programming at RF Deck. Do not relocate Property tag or PSC Service tag on the RF Deck.

2) KNG M150R wiring instructions “Always Hot” Ignition Sense Standard: For the RF Deck KAA0630 power harness; Connect the provided quick disconnect coupler that has Red & Black leads to the RF Deck Mobile. Connect Red A+ 8 AWG wire to the POSITIVE terminal of the battery using the in-line 30 amp fuse/holder. Using other POSITIVE voltage point is not recommended by Relm but if vehicle console fuse panel has sufficient capacity to handle the added 30 amp draw, it is permitted to make POSITIVE terminal connection at that point. For vehicles with David Clark Wireless Headset system, install KLF-2 noise filter in-line near the 12VDC source. Re-wire KLF-2 if vehicle already has one. This 12VDC source is to be always hot and not switched. When running the wire from radio to 12VDC source, make sure that it is secured and use FireStop sealant when passing through the firewall. It is recommended to use split loom tubing, grommets, and tie-wraps to secure wire path. Install the Black 8 AWG wire to the NEGATIVE battery terminal. BK authorizes connection to the vehicle console fuse panel ground terminal if running wire to battery is impossible. Otherwise make sure you have a good chassis ground.

KAA0630 power harness

Alternative: Black 8 AWG wire to chassis location. If necessary, scrape paint to ensure good ground and terminate using terminal lug as in picture.

2.) continued KNG M150R - RCH Remote Control Head KAA0660 wiring instructions

For the DB25 KAA0647 accessory plug - Ignition Sense The KAA0647 to the RF Deck - run the Ignition Sense wire to the switched 12VDC source but wait to connect to RF Deck until after everything else is done.

Install minimum 22 AWG wire jumper to the console fuse block ignition switched terminal, use minimum 2 - max. 5 amp fuse if terminal isn’t already fused. Switched 12VDC power via Ignition Sense, low current draw. The accessory plug Red/White wire with male spade connector at the RF Deck end is to be coupled to a female spade connector – leave Red wire disconnected. Kenwood KCT-18 Ign. *Note: The DB25 connector must be installed on both RF Deck & RCH or radio will not power on.

2.) continued KNG M150R wiring instructions - RCH Control Cable KAA0636

Connect the RCH Control Cable; It is either the KAA0636 which is 17’ long or the KAA0637 which is 25’ long. The DB9 side goes to the RCH & the USB end goes to the RF deck. Either port on the RF deck will work. If more than one RCH is used, you will have to assign them using the Dual Head procedure later in these instructions.

2.) continued KNG M150R RCH KAA0638 Power Cable installation instructions;

The RCH KAA0660 requires “Always Hot” 12VDC power. If not wired properly, the radio will drain the battery in idle condition. The radio systems requires the Ignition Sense wiring so the radio can shutoff and save volatile memory.

KAA0638 16ga RED w/ 7.5amp ATO inline fuse to same 12v source as RF Deck. 16ga BLK to same location as RF Deck BLK.

2.) continued KNG M150R wiring instructions – RCH Power KAA0638 wiring RCH wiring installation instructions;

Power wiring: o Connect the provided quick disconnect coupler that has Red & Black leads to the

RCH. Connect Red A+ 16 AWG wire to the POSITIVE (Not Switched) terminal of the vehicle battery or console fuse panel un-switched power. Use the provided 7.5 amp fuse – in the Yellow wire in-line fuse holder that comes with the RCH install kit. Don’t connect to Ignition Switched side. Always Hot to allow proper shut-down.

o Connect the Black 16 AWG wire to chassis ground at vehicle console fuse panel.

3.) KNG M150R RCH – Remote Control Head KAA0660 Installation instructions,

“Control Head” installation instructions;

Connect the RCH to the Troy console faceplate, p/n FP BK-KNGM150-R. Make sure that the RCH “clicks” into place on the faceplate. There are two nubs on the RCH and it should protrude about 1/4 of an inch from the faceplate. Use the provided hex nut bolts that are in the KAA0630 RF Deck installation kit – not the plastic knobs in the KAA0638. Install star washer in-between the faceplate flange & the RCH as a spacer. Then use hex nut bolt with flat washer & star washer on outside of faceplate flange into the RCH. Tighten so that RCH doesn’t swivel, rattle, or recede later due to vibration.

Note: Do not program code plug nor attempt to Clone to the RCH KAA0660. Always update via RD Deck. This is not like the Kenwood. BK has published Service Bulletins stating that the connection between the “Control Head” and “Mobile” has switches and relays that can corrupt the data.

All CAL FIRE KNG M15R mobile radios are to be upgraded to the new platform of Firmware FW 5.5.0f “All-In-One” and programmed with new Software RES 5.5.3 to include the Mobile Display Disabler application and then perform the “Touchscreen Calibration” on each Control Head. Refer to PDF KNG M150R Firmware Upgrade Procedure for CAL FIRE

KNG M150R RCH – Remote Control Head KAA0660

Make sure that you tighten the screws so that they don’t come loose. We have had several problems with RCH becoming wobbly and rattling due to improper installation. Take the time to do it right the first time. If the installation is out-sourced to a Contractor, please provide this SOP so that they know what CAL FIRE is expecting.
