2.4 Configure the license server
2.4 Configure the license server
This chapter describes the floating license of FlexNet, the network floating license management program adopted by Advance CAD, along with the operation check procedures for Advance CAD.
FlexNet requires a server and a client. A server which runs the license server is called a server machine, and a com-puter which only runs Advance CAD is called a client machine.A single computer can be a license server and a client machine at the same time. At least one license server machine is required on the network to issue license to client machines. Configuration of a license server is a bit complicated, but configuration of a client machine is simple.
Perform the following steps to configure the license server.
Caution. The user who installs FlexNet must belong to the [Administrators] group.
2.4.1 Install FlexNet
FlexNet is software used to start, stop, and manage the license server. A safe installation is to place the license management software in the local disk of the server machine. It is not needed for client machines which do not start the license server.Perform the following steps.
(1) Obtain the FlexNet software.Download the FlexNet software from our web site.
Downloading site
http://www.ctc-g.co.jp/solutions/acad/dmenu.html
The floating license system uses TCP/IP. Therefore, IP addresses and host names must be able to resolve to one another. Before performing the following settings, configure related settings properly, such as %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
[Caution]

> set LM_LICENSE_FILE=PortID1@server1;PortID2@server2;PortID3@server3
Even for redundant servers, a corresponding number of entries separated by semicolons;is required (three in the above case).Use the same PortID for the three servers.
> set LM_LICENSE_FILE=PortID@server1;PortID@server2;PortID@server3
Note) From Version 13 or later, client machines will no longer need "NWLink IPX/SPX-compatible transport." ?However, this change caused a change in the method to obtain DISPLAY names, compared to Version 12 or older. As a result, two licenses are necessary to start Advance CAD Version 13 (or later) and Version 12 (or older) on the same screen.
2.5.2 Check startup of Advance CAD

Appendix A Floating license
A.1 Overview
Floating license
Up to Version 8, Advance CAD used node-locked licenses, in which the actual workstations that can run Advance CAD had to be specified in advance. From Version 9, Advance CAD employs floating licenses, which limits the number of simultaneously running Advance CAD instances.
A floating license does not limit the workstation which can run Advance CAD. Therefore you can run Advance CAD from any workstations connected to your network. We received requests from customers to employ float-ing licenses so they can effectively utilize their licenses. The license management software used for this software is FlexNet Publisher (formerly FLEXlm) from Macro-vision Corporation.
License server
A license server is a program which manages the number of currently running Advance CAD instances. A license server machine is a computer which runs a license server. A license server manages a single LAN (local area network) or multiple LANs connected to a network. For multiple LANs which are not connected to a single network, a separate license server must be installed for each LAN.Workstations that run Advance CAD must be able to be served from a license server via a network. Such appli-cation which is served from the license server is called a client, and a computer which run a client is called a cli-ent machine. Since license servers and clients interact via TCP/IP sockets, workstations from different manufacturers can coexist on a same LAN.The amount of data transmitted for obtaining or releasing a license is less than 1 kilobyte per transaction. The CPU time used by a license server can be as little as few seconds per day if the number of clients is small. Unless there are hundreds of clients, the workload of a license server is small and negligible.
Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21) 41
A.2 Simultaneous access license count for Advance CAD
Licenses are counted by the number of displays. In other words, even if multiple Advance CAD instances are started at the same time, only one license is used as long as the instances are displayed on the same screen.
In a configuration where Advance CAD is operated by remote login from another workstation such as an X termi-nal, one license is used because the data is displayed on the screen of the X terminal instead of the workstation run-ning Advance CAD.
In contrast with the previous node-locked licensing method, upgrading a workstation to a higher model does not result in paying license transfer fees or changing the license file. However, the license server machine is an excep-tion.
When the license management program has stopped, Advance CAD will not start up. In addition, currently running Advance CAD instances will not accept commands other than saving models and exiting the program. In this case, you must save the active model as required and stop Advance CAD. Wait for the license program to restart, and then restart Advance CAD.
Optional functions (seat license)
This licensing is applied to NC, P&ID, sequence diagrams, DXF/DWG interface, CADAM interface, and ACADWorks. These functions are also managed by floating licenses. Take P&ID for example. When the ini-tial P&ID command is entered, a license is obtained. When a P&ID license is not purchased, or the number of concurrently accessed licenses already exceeds the number of purchase, the function cannot be used. The P&ID license is returned when you exit Advance CAD.
Workstations that can use optional functions are also not specified. Therefore, you will not need to change your license file when the workstation that uses the option is changed. Optional function licenses are only needed for simultaneously used instances, not for the number of machines. Therefore, it is possible to buy only a limited number of licenses.
Optional functions (site license)
This licensing is applied to outline fonts and JIS part data.Only one license is needed per license server. Any number of instances of Advance CAD managed by that server can use the function.
42 Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21)
A.3 How to select a license server
A computer or computers to be used as license server machine(s) must be specified. Once a computer is registered as a license server machine, changing the license server to another computer system is limited. For the computer to install the license server machine, take your administration framework into account and select a computer that is seldom replaced. Do not specify a computer that frequently reboots or stops as a license server.
In case a license server fails due to an accident or other reasons, licenses cannot be issued and Advance CAD cannot be started. When you restart the license server, the issue is resolved. This issue seldom occurs. To ensure safety when many licenses are served from a single server, you can employ one of the following two methods.
First, there is a way to run the same license server on three computers. This is called a redundant server configura-tion. When three servers are used, the licensing service will continue if two of the servers are running. In this way, even if the primary license server fails, another license server can respond. You can then repair and restart the failed machine. This configuration virtually eliminates server failure due to an accident. However, if two servers fail, license cannot be served. To use this configuration, three license server installation workstations must be registered. All servers use the same license file.
Another method is to split a license and run multiple independent servers. For example, if a LAN has an Advance CAD license with 100 instances, you can split the license to 30, 30, and 40 instances and assign a separate license server for each split part. With this method, when a license server fails, licenses managed by that license server can no longer be used. However, licenses managed by other running servers are still available. As such, you can avoid the situation that no license is available. In this configuration, you must use a separate license file for each server. This means that the configuration is handled as multiple sites installed on a single LAN.
As long as the number of licenses served by a single server remain small, a single license server can be safely used.
Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21) 43
44 Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21)
A.4 Issue and change licenses
Determine license server configuration
Determine whether to use a single server, a redundant server configuration, or a multiple independent server configuration (a LAN split to multiple sites).
For multiple LANs which are not connected to a single network, a separate license server must be installed for each LAN.When using multiple sites, you must also determine the number of Advance CAD licenses and optional func-tion licenses (such as CADAM interface) managed by each server.
Avoid a multiple independent server configuration which serves only one client or a very small number of clients. Such configuration cannot utilize the advantages of floating licensing.
Obtain a license file
Specify a host name and host ID of the server machine. The host ID is important. The host name can be changed later, but if the correct host name is known in advance, you can omit the task to change the name.
For a redundant server configuration, three host IDs are required. To use multiple sites, a license file is required for each site. Please inform us of a host ID for a server machine for each site. After your license application is reviewed, a license file will be issued.
Host names and host IDs can be looked up as follows.
Change license configuration
Since floating licensing is introduced, the following cases will not need license reissue. Therefore, no cost is necessary.
• Change in the client machine host ID due to workstation replacement• Relocation of an optional function within a site
However, the following cases will need license reissue. Therefore, additional cost will be necessary.
(1) Change of license server machineA license file will be void when the host ID of the license server machine is changed. For a redundant server configuration, the license will be void even when part of the server machines undergoes a change in host ID. A change in license server configuration will also need license reissue.
• Switch from a single server to a redundant server configuration• Switch from a redundant server configuration to a single server• Split a single site to multiple sites• Merge multiple sites to a single site
Operating System Host name Host ID
Windows 7 ipconfig /all Refer to the Physical Address.
Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21) 45
(2) Transferring licenses between sitesWhen there are two sites and you need to transfer part of the licenses from one site to another, the license file must be reissued. This is the same for the transfer of optional function licenses.
46 Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21)
A.5 License file
Starting from Advance CAD Version 17, a license borrowed function is added. For this reason, the license file for-mat has changed, and a license file for Version 17 or later does not support starting Advance CAD of Version 16 or older.
Starting from Advance CAD Version 18.10, Windows Vista support is added. For this reason, a license file for Ver-sion 18.10 or later does not support starting Advance CAD of Version 18.02 or older.
A license file contains the following types of lines.
• Server information lineSERVER hostname MACaddress port-no.
• Vendor daemon information lineVENDOR daemon-name daemon-dir option-name
• Feature information lineFEATURE feature-name daemon-name version date #users......
The items in each information line are separated by an arbitrary number of spaces.
The following is an example of a license file.
SERVER myserver 0123456789ab TCP:7282VENDOR CTCMDARD C:\FLEXlm\CTCMDARD.exeFEATURE advancecad_win_base CTCMDARD 21.000 permanent 1 BORROW=1344 \ ck=156 SIGN=A889C96440E4FEATURE advancecad_win_dxf CTCMDARD 21.000 permanent 1 BORROW=1344 \ ck=181 SIGN=9D0FFEE8F506
The information in a license file must not be modified, except for the following four items which your system administrator can modify. Modify them to match your server machine environment.
• Host name in the server information lineIf the host name shown in the license file is wrong, correct the name.
• Port number in the server information lineSpecify a TCP/IP port number to be used by the license server. /etc/services shows the port num-bers used by the operating system for network services. Specify an unoccupied port number of 1025 or more.
• Path name in the vendor daemon information lineSpecify a directory where the daemon program resides. If the daemon program directory is wrong, correct the directory.
• Option file name in the vendor daemon information lineAn option file is a file used by your system administrator to specify control over FlexNet Pub-lisher lm functions such as "specify processes not to be output to a log file" or "reserve a license for a specific user."If options are not specified, do not enter a file name.
Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21) 47
A.5.1 License file details
(1) Server information line
SERVER hostname MACaddress(hostid) port-no.hostname : Host name of a license server machine. This item can be edited.
If host names are not specified at the time of issue, the values would be "host1"..."host5". Change them to appropriate host names.
MACaddress : MAC address of a license server machine. This information must be specified at the license application of the Windows version.
hostid : Host ID of a license server machine. This information must be specified at the license application of the Solaris and Linux versions.
port-no. : Port number to be used for communication between the license server pro-gram and Advance CAD.This item can be edited. The value is 7282 at the time of license issue. When changing, use a number not listed in the /etc/services file and which is 1025 or more.
There is basically only one SERVER line, but three lines are required for the redundant server config-uration. When using multiple SERVER line for a redundant server configuration, use the same port-no. for all servers.
(2) Daemon information line
VENDOR daemon-name daemon-dir [option-name]
daemon-name : Vendor daemon name. This item is the name of a program managing application programs that use floating licenses. In Advance CAD, the name is CTCMDARD.
daemon-dir : The name of directory where the vendor daemon resides. This item can be edited. The directory name is arbitrary at the time of license issue. Please edit it to include correct information. Enter the full path to the directory where the vendor daemon resides. The vendor daemon for Advance CAD (CTCMDARD) resides at the exe directory. Therefore, if the home directory of a user who uses Advance Cad is /acad, the daemon directory will be /acad/exe.
option-name : Option file name. This item can be edited. This item is not listed at time of license issue. Option file is used when you want to manage licenses based on users. If not neces-sary, this can be omitted. Enter the full path to the option file name.
(3) Feature information line
FEATURE feature-name daemon-name version date #users borrow checksum code
feature-name : Feature name that can be provided. This item shows the function names that can be provided by each application.
daemon-name : The name of the vendor daemon which controls the function. The name of the vendor daemon that controls Advance CAD features is CTCMDARD.
version : Version number of the function. This is the major version number of Advance CAD. It is not necessary to change this number when Advance CAD under-goes a minor version upgrade.
date : Expiration date of the license. This item is written in the "day-month-year" for-mat. "Day" is a number from 1 to 31, "Month" is a three-letter abbreviation of months in English, and "Year" is a four-digit number. "permanent" 0 means that there is no expiration date.
#users : Maximum number of functions that can be used. This item shows the maxi-mum number of functions that can be provided by each application.
borrow : Maximum duration (hours) in which the license can be borrowed. This is set to 1344 hours (8 weeks).
checksum : Checksum code. This item is used to check validity of each feature line.code : Password for each function.

A.5.2 FlexNet Publisher TCP/IP port number
From FLEXlm V7.0, the port number to be used for communication between vendor daemon (CTCM-DARD) and client (Advance CAD) can be specified. This function is useful in cases when a client out of a firewall accesses the FlexNet Publisher server machine inside the firewall. If access via the specified port number is accepted from outside the firewall, access is available for the clients outside the firewall as well. However, please note that this might form a security hole.To use this, write a VENDOR line in the license file. For example, write as follows.
VENDOR CTCMDARD C:\FLEXLM\EXE\CTCMDARD port=1050
By specifying as above, Advance CAD and the vendor daemon CTCMDARD will communicate via port number 1050.The VENDOR line is supported from FLEXlm V7.0 and has the same function as the DAEMON line. Because you cannot specify a port number with the DAEMON line, use the VENDOR line when a port number must be specified. The following shows part of a license file with the VENDOR line specified.
Old license file (part)
SERVER ctc 0123456789ab TCP:7282DAEMON CTCMDARD C:\FLEXLM\EXE\CTCMDARD
A license file with a port number specified for communicating with the vendor daemon (part)
SERVER ctc 0123456789ab TCP:7282VENDOR CTCMDARD C:\FLEXLM\EXE\CTCMDARD port=1050
This function is only available for Advance CAD V15.00 or later.
A.5.3 Merge license files
When other software that adopts FlexNet Publisher is running, you will have multiple license files issued by corresponding vendors. In this case, if license servers for multiple software are configured to run on the same machine, multiple license files can be merged.Compare the license files. The files that meet the following conditions can be merged.1) The number of server information lines are the same. 2) The host ID or IDs of the corresponding server information lines are the same. To merge two license files, delete server information from one of the license files and add the remaining lines to the other license file. For safety, create a copy of the original license file in advance.
Suppose there is the following license file.SERVER myserver 000011112222 TCP:7282VENDOR foo C:\path\fooFEATURE foo 1.000 1-jan-0 4 XYY83971C3879A1101F6 ck=15
The following Advance CAD license file is to be merged.SERVER myserver 000011112222 TCP:7282VENDOR CTCMDARD C:\FLEXlm\exe\CTCMDARD.exeFEATURE advancecad_win_base CTCMDARD 21.000 permanent 7 BORROW=1344 \ ck=197 SIGN=9818B6BC7096
Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21) 49
The merged file will be as follows.SERVER myserver 000011112222 TCP:7282VENDOR foo C:\path\fooVENDOR CTCMDARD C:\FLEXlm\exe\CTCMDARD.exeFEATURE foo 1.000 1-jan-0 4 XYY83971C3879A1101F6 ck=15FEATURE advancecad_win_base CTCMDARD 21.000 permanent 7 BORROW=1344 \ ck=197 SIGN=9818B6BC7096
There may be a case when a license file cannot or would not be merged. In this case, run separate license server instances for a license file issued by each vendor. Specify different port numbers for all server information lines so none of the lines would have the same number.
50 Installation Guide (Advance CAD Version 21)
A.6 Notes on FlexNnet Publisher (formerly FLEXlm)
A.6.1 Search order of license paths
From FLEXlm Version 7 (Version 6 for Windows), the search order of the licenses changed as follows. (The ver-sion of FlexNnet Publisher (formerly FLEXlm) used by Advance CAD Version 21 is Version 11.14.)
• Windows versionA license path is registered under the registry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FLEXlm License Manager ". This value is created when Advance CAD is successfully started. This registry entry takes priority over the LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable. When your license server is changed, configure the CTCMDARD_LICENSE_FILE environment variable or use the lmpath command (see "A.7.5 Set license environment variables") or lmtools (see "A.8.5 Configure the license environment variable") to configure.
A.6.2 Notes on obtaining display names (Windows only)
Advance CAD only uses one license when multiple instances of Advance CAD are started on a single display. This is because FlexNet Publisher keeps attributes such as user name, host name, and display name per obtained license, and Advance CAD adopts a method that the same display name is counted as the one license. This method is the same even if Advance CAD versions are different.

A.7.7 Borrow a license
There are cases when you want to use Advance CAD for a short period installed on a laptop out of office in a meeting or a business trip. This is possible if the license server in your office permits access over the firewall, but it is generally not permitted due to security issues. In this case, you can use the FlexNet Borrow function to temporarily borrow a license for using Advance CAD.After the borrowing period expires, you will not be able to start Advance CAD.On the other hand, the number of borrowed licenses is subtracted from the license server. When the borrowing period expires, or the license is returned before expiration, the number of licenses is restored.
lmborrowBorrow a license from the server. This command supports users to check out the license.
Common options{all|vendor} enddate[time] "all": Specify vendor daemons for all license servers accessible from
the client."vendor": Specify for each vendor daemon. For Advance CAD, specify CTCMDARD."enddate [time]": Specify the return date of the license.
