ESS-1 Installation and Operation Manual

DESCRIPTION

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Broadcast Tools®, ESS-1 provides a cost-effective, small profile solution forstandard serial-to-Ethernet connectivity. Designed with the broadcaster in mind, the ESS-1 is equipped with extensive RFI protection. It is ideal for applicationsrequiring data support for both RS-232 and RS-422 communications. The ESS-1allows any device with a serial port, Ethernet connectivity and is ideal for serial tun-neling or applications where a COM port, TCP Socket, UDP Socket, or UDPMulticast functionality is needed. Serial bridging/tunneling allows two previouslynon-networked devices to easily communicate information and operate with exist-ing installed software applications on an Ethernet network. The ESS-1 also workswith software applications using TCP/UDP Sockets, allowing a serial device tointeroperate with the software applications without the need to install a driver. TheESS-1 is simple to install locally or remotely through most web browsers or our sup-plied configuration utility. The included “Device Installer” utility application willautomatically detect all ESS-1 devices on your network. A Set up guide is providedto make network configuration hassle-free. The ESS-1 is FCC part 15 verified andis intended for commercial use only. The small profile of the ESS-1 makes instal-lation hassle-free.

Features:• 10/100 base-T auto-sensing Ethernet port with Link & activity indicator -

Full/half duplex operation.• Supported protocols: TCP/IP, UDP/IP, ARP, ICMP, SNMP, TFTP, Telnet,

DHCP, BOOTP, HTTP, and AutoIP.• Built-in Web Server• Serial port baud rates from 300 to 920K baud.• RS-232 serial port with flow control. • RS-422 serial port via plug-in euroblock screw terminals.• Device Installer setup utility supplied.• COM port redirector driver included.• LED indicators for Power, TX and RX data.• Wide range input power requirements from 7.5 to 34 VDC.• 9 VDC wall transformer supplied.

(Optional CE certified 240 VAC power supply available). • Extended temperature range -40°F to +185°F (-40°C to +85°C)• Small profile packaging.

INSPECTION

Please examine your ESS-1 carefully for any damage that may have been sustainedduring shipping. If any is noted, please notify the shipper immediately and retainthe packaging for inspection by the shipper. The package should contain the ESS-1,this manual, 7 foot CAT 5 straight-through cable and the 9 VDC @ 1 amp wall trans-former.

SETUP

he Quick Start Setup Guide is supplied with some common application examples. Ifmore in-depth information is needed, please refer to our Advanced ConfigurationGuide available on the supplied CD or the download section of our web site:http://www.broadcasttools.com/

NOTE: DHCP and Auto IP are enabled with the IP Address set at 0.0.0.0 by default. If you are not familiar with Ethernet enabled equipment, it may be useful to contactyour IT department, network administrator or outside network consultant.

Information you’ll need to know1 - An available Static IP address to assign to the ESS-1.2 - Your network’s subnet mask.3 - Your network’s gateway address.4 -The data port number. The factory default setting for channel/port-1 is 10001.5 - Email setup information if applicable.

The ESS-1’s RJ-45 (Ethernet) is normally attached to a DSL/Cable router, Ethernet hubor switch. The supplied “Device Installer” software should be used to locate and con-figure your ESS-1. The “Device Installer” software is available on the supplied CD orfor download from our web site, http://www.broadcasttools.com/ under “Downloads”.

1 - Install the “Device Installer” software on the PC used for the ESS-1 setup.

2 - Connect the supplied straight-through CAT 5 cable to the RJ-45 connector onthe ESS-1 labeled Ethernet and the other end to your hub, switch or router.NOTE: If you are attaching the ESS-1 directly to your computer, you MUSTuse a XOVER CAT 5 cable.

3 - Connect the supplied 9 VDC power supply to the ESS-1 power jack. Verify thatthe power led and left “LINK” led above the RJ-45 is lit.

CAUTION!

Installation of the ESS-1 in high RF environ-ments should be per-formed with care.Shielded cable is sug-gested for all controlconnections. Allshields and the stationground should be con-nected to either of thescrews on the DB-9connector. For light-ning protection devices, check outwww.polyphaser.comand www.itwlinx.com.

Assigning an IP addressalready in use by anotherdevice may cause prob-lems with your network!

Com Port Redirector The function of this application is to redirect customer application data destined fora local serial (COM) port on a PC to the serial port of an ESS-1. Rather than goingout the local COM port, the data is transmitted across the Ethernet network usingTCP/IP. The ESS-1 attached to the network receives the data and presents it on itsserial port. Conversely, data sent into the serial port of the ESS-1 is transmittedback to the customer’s application via the network to the Com Port Redirector.Com Port Redirector then presents the data to the customer’s application as if it werefrom a local serial COM port.

1 – The following procedure should be performed on the ESS-1 before loading theRedirection software on the PC.

2 - Connect the supplied straight-through CAT 5 cable to the RJ-45 connector on theESS-1 labeled Ethernet and the other end to your hub, switch or router. NOTE:If you are attaching the ESS-1 directly to your computer, you MUST use aXOVER CAT 5 cable.
