Overview _____________________________________________________________________

The AW3 system is very easy to install. Generally mount the equipment on the wall, run the wires to the proper terminal on the equipment. Connect 12volt low voltage power supply. Turn power on to the equipment. Use the resident tag to set the range of the receive board with a small screw driver. YOU’RE DONE. it is that easy.

This guide explains how to install and operate the Alpha Watch 3 Platinum / Gold / Staff Controllers. The Alpha Watch 3 Platinum and Gold system are a fully functional Wander Control system. The “Platinum” monitors tags like other selective systems offered by Alpha Watch Inc. with an LCD Display which displays a Tags ID#. The “Gold” monitors tags like other selective systems but it does not include a display. The Staff Controller is a fully function Perimeter Locking system with no LCD Display. The “Platinum / Gold / Staff” has the ability to interface with a variety of other devices including Magnetic locks to hold the doors secure and alarm panels for remote enunciation of alarm conditions. Additional connections that are commonly made to the “Platinum / Gold / Staff” are external relays, elevator controls, CCTV camera systems, and a host of other peripheral equipment. All Alpha Watch equipment runs on low voltage. 12 Volts DC. The “Platinum / Gold / Staff” is fully programmable and upgradeable to keep up with the ever changing needs of today and into the future. The “Platinum / Gold / Staff” is compatible with any of the Alpha Watch 3 equipment. Some of the most common features of the Alpha Watch 3 Series” are:

* Platinum / Gold are able to detect the standard RF3 tag with factory programmed ID Bit.

* Variable egress times from 1 - 255 seconds (2nd Generation only) * Instant egress termination once the door has been closed after exit. * Field programmable egress code (1 - 5 digits) * Timed perimeter mode activation during a selected time of day. * Programmable audio signal to differentiate different units. * Ability to directly drive multiple magnetic locks * Alpha Watch 3 series equipment runs on low voltage 12 volts DC. * Tag Bands now come in Pink, Silver, Blue, Premium Gray colors

Basic Operation Platinum, Gold Controllers: Upon power up, the “Platinum / Gold” will continuously monitor a door and look for a tag to detect. If the door is opened while a tag is detected the system with activate an audible alarm to notify the staff of the problem. Electromagnetic locks may be implemented to secure the door. To pass through the protected door with a tag present, the staff member would enter an escort code at the keypad or the optional, “KP1, KP2” or depress a release button “Escort R”. Basic Operation Staff Controller: The Staff will continuously monitor a door. If the door is opened the Staff controller will activate an audible alarm to notify the staff of the problem. Electromagnetic locks may be implemented to secure the door. To pass through the protected door with a tag present, the staff member would enter an escort code at the keypad or the optional, “KP1, KP2” or depress a release button “Escort R”. INSTALLATION _____________________________________________________________________ Mounting: The mounting and wiring of equipment should be as follows: (Also refer to the General Wiring Diagram and Connection diagram for further assistance) Control Unit

1. Choose a place to mount the control unit within 3 feet of the protected door or area at

eye level. The control unit is shipped with a surface mount plastic enclosure. 2. Punch-out the desired access hole at the back of the surface mount box to use for

wiring. 3. Mark and Drill through drywall. (If desired, wires may be run through a wire mold

channel mounted vertically, but access hole must be drilled through the top of the surface mount box.)

4. Screw surface mount box to the wall. The back box must be securely attached to the wall (residents may try to remove the unit from the wall).

5. After the back box has been securely fastened to the wall you may pull the cables from the box out to your external connections. The following list shows the most common cable runs but this list does not necessarily cover all circumstances.

INSTALLATION _____________________________________________________________________ Door Contacts The standard door contacts shipped with the Alpha Watch System are a surface mount style. Hidden switches are available as a special order. The contacts consist of a switch section (has 2 screws) that are mounted to the doorframe and a magnet that is attached to the door. Spacers are also supplied, to space the switch and magnet from a metal door and frame. When mounting the magnet to the door, make sure that the distance from the switch is less than .5”. Use one door contact for a single door and two sets of contacts for a double door (one per door).

1. Mark and drill holes in the door frame away from the hinged side of the door using the actual switch (with two screw terminals) as a template.

2. Drill one extra hole above the switch screw terminals as an access for the cable. 3. Mount the door switch to the frame above the door using the screws provided. 4. Mark and drill holes in the top of the door for the contact magnet and close door, making

sure there is no more than a 1/8” gap between the switch and the contact magnet. Wiring: Control Unit

Once the back box is securely mounted and all cables are pulled you may proceed to wire the control unit to the cables that you have brought into the back box. The following list shows the most common wiring connections to the control unit, however there may be variations at your facility. Please refer to the Connection Diagram for more information.

Dip Switch “#1” should be up in the ON Position “Gold & Platinum”. When the Dip Switches are changed, the Platinum/Gold Controller must be powered down then powered up for the Micro to read the new dip switch positions to take affect. RX3 antenna JB2 should have a jumper “Black Berg Connector” across position #2 “Serial mode”.

KP1 & KP2 to Platinum / Gold / Staff Controller Installation

Purpose: This Document will explain how to connect the KP1 & KP2 to the 2nd Generation Platinum / Gold / Staff controllers. The New Controllers now accommodate different external keypads, with a Positive or Negative trigger mode to insert the controller into the Escort Mode.

There are 3 wires used on the KP1 & KP2 the colors and functions are as follows:

Red - Positive Power (6 – 12VDC) Black - Common Ground Green - Output

KP1 & KP2 Platinum Gold Staff Red J5 – Pin 1 - +12VDC

Black J5 – Pin 2 - Ground Green J3 – Pin 2 – Escort Trigger In

If using our KP1 or KP2 Keypads: Turn on Dip Switch #4 on Platinum / Gold / Staff Controller

* NOTE: Switch #4 on Controllers must be on or “KP1 & KP2” will not function. *

* If using the “Escort R” Pushbutton, Switch #4 must be in the OFF Position. *

INSTALLATION ______________________________________________________________________ Power Supply The 12 volt low voltage power supply should be placed in a location that has a fairly ambient temperature. The supply will operate safely as long as the temperature is between 45-85 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are using 18 AWG or larger cable you may place the supply up to 50’ away from the control unit. Make sure that the power supply is not wired into a switched 110 volt outlet.

1. A standard 110V grounded outlet should be provided above the ceiling (if possible) within 8 feet of the door to bring facility’s electrical power to the power supply of the control unit.

2. Securely attach power supply above in an accessible area within 10 feet of the control unit.

3. Drop 18 AWG 2 conductor cable through wall (or wire mold channel) to the control unit.

4. Connect to the back of the control unit at J5 pins 1 and 2 (pin 1 is positive +). 5. Connect to the power supply + (red) and – (black)

Door Contacts

1. Run 20 AWG 2 conductor cable through the access hole and connect to the switch as

shown below. If there is more than one switch, connect the switches in series.

Switch settings for Staff Control Unit

The Second Generation of Staff Controllers use small switches to select critical hardware

function. Unlike the first generation that used jumpers. There are several differences between the two generations of Staff units but we will concentrate on specific second generation functions right now.

The switches are located on the back of the control unit and are labeled 1 – 16. *Currently only four of the switches are used.* Switch 1 – On - * MUST BE IN THE ON POSITION! * Switch 2 - Off - ‘*’ key is used to reset alarm and disable lock. On - ‘*’ key is disabled. Switch 3 - Off - 9000 codes are inputted normally from keypad. On - 9000 are disabled while the auxiliary input is active. Switch 4 - Off - Positive voltage to trigger Escort mode “J3 - Pin 2”.

On - Negative to trigger Escort mode “J3 - Pin 2”.

Setting Range of RX3 Antenna When setting the range of the RX3 antenna, make sure there are no RF Tags, any where around the door you are setting up. Even if the RF tags are 100’ away on a table top this will affect the setting of the system. *MAKE SURE ALL TAGS ARE IN A METAL BOX, COOKIE TIN OR ALUMIN FOIL WRAPPED AROUND TAGS WHEN NOT IN USE! * To find the RF Tag ID# look at the back of the tag, there will be a 3 digit ### Number. That is the ID Bit. When setting up the system keep an eye on the ID bit on the LCD display and make certain the ID=### is the tag you are working with. “Since there is no LCD on the Gold Controller 9024 entered on the keypad will beep out the last tag read.” The Facility must be responsible on keeping count of where all the tags are located when the system is in operation. If a tag is lost or misplaced and close to a protected door, the controller will pick up the tag and lock the door, when the door is opened set off the alarm. This will be very frustrating for the facility.

When setting up the range of the Platinum / Gold Controller and RX3 antenna, (2) Door Switch should be connected & the door closed. The Platinum controller, LCD Display should display “DC” Door Closed on the LCD display. If “DO” Door Open is displayed and a tag is in the area of the controller, the system will alarm, at this point the controller must be reset to stop alarm condition. The RX3 Antenna system has a gain adjustment “RV2” on the circuit board. You will need a small screw driver to adjust the range “Sensitivity”. Place the RF Tag on your body in the same area that the resident will wear the RF Tag using a band. DO NOT PLACE TAG IN PALM OF HAND TO SET UP RX3 RECEIVE BOARD! This will give you inconstancy in the tag pickup range. Adjust RX3 Antenna gain so the red LED blinks, on the RX3 antenna. Walk out of the detected field with the RF Tag keeping an eye on the red LED on the RX3 antenna. The LED should stay off. Walk up to RX3 Antenna & LED should start to blink. Periodically look at the Platinum controller LCD display & check ID Bit make sure the number is equal to the RF Tag you are working with. If a different ID Bit is on the LCD, find the RF Tags that are giving you a false setup. The average range of a pickup area is 10’ to 15’ from a door. Depends on facility needs. *ID bit has to be equal to the RF Tag you are working with.*

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you need a fairly tight detection area on a double door we would recommend that you purchase a second antenna so that both sides of the door are covered without having to turn up the sensitivity of a single antenna to the point where you are picking up tags in

nearby rooms.

Helpful Setup Hints: HINT: 9029 – Test mode “Platinum / Gold Only”

In this mode the Platinum / Gold unit will produce a short beep every time a tag is detected. This is very useful when setting up the receive antenna. You don’t need to see the RED LED in order to set range on the RX3 Antenna. Good for checking long range detect area.

Note: to leave this mode simply enter 9029 again. (9029 toggles mode)

9024 – Beep out last tag identified. ( Platinum / Gold ) This command will beep out the ID# of the last tag the unit identified.

INSTALLATION - Receive Antenna _____________________________________________________________________ Mounting RX3 Antenna: The antenna should be mounted on the side of the door opposite the hinged side of the door that opens outwards around 18” above the floor for maximum reliability in tag detection. “Refer to Diagram (4)”

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you need a fairly tight detection area on a double door we would recommend that you purchase a second antenna so that both sides of the door are covered without having to turn up the sensitivity of a single antenna to the point where you are picking up tags in

nearby rooms.

Installation

1. Open the top of the antenna by removing four screws and pulling the top off of the antenna.

2. Mount the antenna next to the door to be protected at approximately 18” above the floor and opposite the hinged side of the door if possible. If you are protecting a double door with a wall mount antenna you may mount the box on either side of the door but preferably on the side that you believe will have the most traffic. “A second RX3 Antenna is recommended for a double door.”

INSTALLATION- Software _____________________________________________________________________ Software Set-Up Programming of Alpha Watch 3 “Platinum” PROGRAMMING - The “Platinum / Gold / Staff” control unit uses simple codes to access unit information and make changes to the setup of the system. The following section describes each of the Commands: 9001 – Change Escort Time ( Platinum / Gold / Staff ) * Wandercontrol Mode only! * This function allows you to set the escort time from 1 – 255 seconds. Example: to program an escort time of 45 seconds enter the following: “9001#45# 9002 - Change Escort Code ( Platinum / Gold ) * Wandercontrol Mode only! *

This function changes the default escort code of “217” to any one to 5 digit code desired. Avoid using codes that are similar to the command codes “90??”. This change is only effective while the system is in its default wander control mode, if the system is placed in perimeter mode that code would need to be changed as well (see 9008).

Example: to program a new escort code of “4312” enter the following: “9002#4312# 9003 - Change Alarm Pattern ( Platinum / Gold / Staff ) * Wandercontrol Mode only! *

The default alarm sound is a steady tone, you may select one of nine other sounds to help differentiate the control unit from other audible devices that you may have in the local area. All of the options are a sequence of on and off times that produce a different sound pattern. The following table describes each of the patterns available.

0 steady on (default) 1 on .75 seconds - off .75 seconds 2 on .31 seconds - off .31 seconds 3 on .19 seconds - off .38 seconds 4 on .06 seconds - off .06 seconds 5 on .75 seconds - off .25 seconds 6 on .5 seconds - off .25 seconds 7 on .25 seconds - off .50 seconds 8 on .25 seconds - off .375 seconds 9 alarm off

Example: to change from the default steady tone to a pulsing tone such as “5” enter the following: “9003#5#”

9006 - Enter Perimeter Mode ( Platinum / Gold / Staff )

This command puts you directly into the perimeter mode; this feature is very useful in the evening when there is little traffic at the door

9007 - Exit Perimeter Mode ( Platinum / Gold / Staff )

This command takes you out of perimeter mode and places you back into wander control mode

9008 -Change Perimeter Escort Code ( Platinum / Gold / Staff ) * Perimeterl Mode only! *

This function changes the default perimeter escort code of “217” to any one to 5 digit code desired. Avoid using codes that are similar to the command codes “90??”. This change is only effective while the system is in perimeter mode while in wander control mode use the 9002 command.

The clock in the “Platinum” system uses a 24 hour system of time keeping. The time is primarily used if the system is set up to automatically go into perimeter mode at a certain time of day. Example: to change the time to 9:15 PM (21:15) you would enter

the following: “9012#2115#”

9013 - Set Perimeter On Time ( Platinum / Gold / Staff ) This is the time that the control unit would automatically enter perimeter mode. Example: to enter the perimeter mode every night at 7:00 PM you would enter the

following: “9013#1900#” 9014- Set Perimeter Off Time ( Platinum / Gold / Staff )

This is the time that the control unit would automatically exit the perimeter mode and return to wander control mode.

Example: to exit perimeter mode at 6:00 AM every morning enter the following:

“9014#0600#” 9015- Set Max Tag ( Platinum / Gold )

This is used to set the maximum tag ID that the unit will read (default = 254). The range of tag ID’s is 1 - 254

Example: to set the maximum tag ID to 200 “9015#200#” 9016- Set Min Tag ( Platinum / Gold )

This is used to set minimum tag ID that the unit will read (default = 1). The range of tag ID’s is 1 - 254

Example: to set the maximum tag ID to 23 “9016#23#” 9023 – Beep out software version. ( Platinum / Gold / Staff ) This command will beep out the version number of the software installed. 9024 – Beep out last tag identified. ( Platinum / Gold ) This command will beep out the ID BIT# of the last tag the unit identified. 9029 – Test mode ( Platinum / Gold )

In this mode the Platinum unit will produce a short beep every time a tag is detected. This is very useful when setting up the receive antenna.

Note: to leave this mode simply enter 9029 again. (9029 toggles mode) 9030 – Toggle Escort Beep Function Default ON Beep when in Escort mode. 9099 – RESET ( Platinum / Gold / Staff )

This command will return all data to the defaults. NOTE: Removing Power from the Controller, the system defaults do not revert back to factory settings unlike the 1st Generation Platinum Controller.

Default data is as follows: Wander Control escort code – “217” Perimeter Mode escort code – “217” Escort Time – 20 seconds Wander alarm pattern – 0 Perimeter alarm pattern – 1 Perimeter on time – 00 Perimeter off time – 00 Min tag to read – 1 Max tag to read – 254 INSTALLATION - Software ______________________________________________________________________ Instructions for disabling the 9000 codes ( Platinum / Gold / Staff )

Step (1) turn on switch #3 on the back of the control unit Step (2) a switch must be connected to J4, pins 3 + 4.

When the switch is closed then all 9000 codes are disabled. If you want to program the 9000 codes, you can release this feature by opening the switch. Now the controller recognizes the 9000 codes again and can be programmed. When finished programming the 9000 codes, the Platinum controller can be locked out again by closing switch.

As a result, normal and therapeutic bathing procedures do not damage the tag. The tags are activated the day they leave the factory for maximum battery life. When the battery life is used up, the tags can be sent back to Alpha Watch, Inc. for Battery replacement at ½ the cost of a new tag unless you have purchased the Forever tag. “Battery Replaced Forever” Each resident tag undergoes extreme testing prior to shipping. When the tags are completed in manufacturing, they are sent to our quality control area for environmental testing. Each tag is water tested then heated to extreme temperatures for 1 hour. The tags are then taken from hot to a frozen state for 1 hour. The resident tags, sit at room temperature for 4 hours before final testing, which consists of tests for the proper range of operation. The last step is the ID code is programmed into the tag. All these steps insure that all the resident tags are the most reliable in the field. To find the RF Tag ID# look at the back of the tag, there will be a 3 digit ### Number. That is the ID Bit. The Facility must be responsible on keeping count of where all the tags are located when the system is in operation. If a tag is lost or misplaced and close to a protected door, the Controller will pick up the tag and continuously lock the door. It is recommended that each tag be tested prior to placing on a resident. The tags should then be tested by nursing at the start of every shift, or after every meal to insure that the tags are functioning properly. Resident tags should be tested a minimum of once a day. A resident tag tester is available for purchase from Alpha watch. The tag tester is a hand held unit that is used to validate RF-3 tags. Resident tags can be cleaned by soaking in alcohol for 5 minutes.

TAG ATTACHMENT AND REMOVAL ALPHA WATCH 3 tags are encased in a watertight plastic housing. As a result, normal and therapeutic bathing procedures do not damage the tag. Each tag may be assigned a unique identification number. HOW TO ATTACH A TAG Slide the band through the tabs of the tag from the bottom to the top. Place the tag on the top of the wanderer’s wrist or around their ankle. Bring the band around so that the wholes meet the snap. Adjust the band to a comfortable position for the resident. Take care not to make the band so loose that it will slip off. Select the proper hole and slip it down the post of the snap. Bring the excess band back over allowing the next whole to also slip down on the post of the snap assembly. Close the snap by bending the flap over and squeezing the two components together. Cut off any excess band with scissors. REMOVAL OF TAG To remove the tag, simply cut the band with scissors and slide the tag off of the band. Removal of the tag is necessary in the following instances: The tag is known to be worn out The resident will be leaving the Facility for and extended period of time. Take note of any unusual activity in the area of the door. 2. Are the systems a single door or a double door? 3. Is any other equipment hooked to the same 110 volt power source? 4. CONNECTIONS FOR ALERT 6 PANEL When you protect more than one door, let your staff hear and see which door is alarming. The Alert 6 gives you both audible and visual confirmation of an alarm condition. The Alert 6 Panel is equipped with a common alarm output to be used to drive other alarming devices such as strobe lights, dedicated audible devices, pager systems, and voice modules. ALERT PANEL HOOKUP - The following is the connection diagram for the Alert 6. Each of the controllers (Alpha Watch™ units) must have a wire run from them to the alert panel. With the door closed and latched apply input power to terminals 1 & 2. Slide Selector switch (DS1) # 1 to the on position to activate the set-up mode. Rotate the on-board keyswitch counter-clockwise. The 3101-b should now be unlocked (led1-off).
