Install Keys and Beam Maps

The Exede network consists of multiple “spot beams” that each cover a specific geographic region. Each spot beam has a specific set of RF

parameters that prevent interference with the neighboring spot beams. The modem must use the correct RF configuration in order to connect to its

closest spot beam.

The RF configurations are set by entering in a specific installation key when pointing the dish. To determine the correct installation key for your

location, use the network beam maps in this document. There are two different network maps, the first map with the orange shaded regions, are spot

beams for the ViaSa-1 coverage area. The highest terminal speeds will be achieved under these beams. The other map is for the Augmentation Beam

coverage area. While these beams provide high speed service, if you have a choice in regions where the ViaSat-1 and Augmentation beams overlap,

one will want to select the beam key for the ViaSat-1 beam.

The beam maps are overlaid with iso-elevation lines. These lines are the approximate starting elevation, that the installer needs to use, for initial

pointing of the reflector.

Step-1: Look at the appropriate beam map and determine which beam covers the area where the terminal will be installed.

Step-2: Look up the install key based on beam number. Pick the install key for your terminal type. The center-fed Pro Portable terminal uses a

different install key than the non-center-fed fixed, semi-fixed and auto-acquire terminals. Make note of this install key for entry into the

modem later.

Step-3: Note the terminal location and estimate the starting elevation as determined by the iso-elevation lines on the beam map.

Example: Assume an installation in the town of Phoenix Az, Looking at the ViaSat-1 beam map, we see that Phoenix is under beam 363 and at an

iso-elevation line around 51-degrees. Looking up beam-363 on the install key list shows an install key of JBGM-TQF2-9PMH-3LGW (for a fixed,

semi-fixed or auto-acquire terminal). This install key will be used in step 5 of the pointing job aid located at http://www.viasat.com/exede-enterprise-installer-
