MOVING INTO THE ‘GOOGLE’

AGE: Watch lessons at home &do homework in the class-room!

GTU to support flipped class-room, manycolleges shows interest

Ahmedabad: Gujarat TechnologicalUniversity (GTU) is planning to supportfaculty members who want to launch intheir class-rooms latest concept of flippedclass-room. After putting the proposal onGTU website, many colleges have showninterest to start flipped class-room. Manyfaculty members have also shown interestin this unique concept.

In traditional regular class-rooms, studentslearn in the class-room and then doinghomework after reaching home. In flippedclass-rooms, the students will watch videolectures at home and obtain all thenecessary information, come to class-room, they will do homework in front ofprofessor. If a student has some problem inunderstand the lesson, professor can teachthem immediately.

Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor ofGTU said that the methodology of teachingand assessment have not changed duringthe last 158 years. The rest of the world hasmoved ahead and made their class-room

study more interesting and meaningful. Asthe quantum of knowledge goes onincreasing, we have to adopt the newmethodology. The flipped class-room isone more step under the Active Learningand Creating Excitement (ALCE) project, which is going on since last Four years inGTU.

Gujarat Technological University under its

initiative, known as “Active Learning”,wants to support the Faculty Members,

who may want to experiment with the ideaof “Flipped Classroom”. The flippedclassroom is a pedagogical model in whichthe typical lecture and homeworkelements of a course are reversed. Shortvideo lectures are viewed by students athome before the class session, while inclass time is devoted to exercises, projects,or discussions. If a Faculty Member, withthe approval of his/ her Head ofDepartment and Principal, wants toconduct the experiment for a particularsubject, that he/ she is teaching, GTU willprovide support in each and every possiblemanner.

Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approachin which direct instruction moves from thegroup learning space to the individuallearning space and the resulting groupspace is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment wherethe educator guides students as they applyconcepts and engage creatively in thesubject matter. The Four Pillars of F-L-I-P

are: (1) F=Flexible Environment, (2)L=Learning Culture, (3) I=InternationalContent, (4) P=Professional Educator.

Under the Active Learning and CreatingExcitement (ALCE) in the laboratories, workshops and classes of GTU, workshopsfor Faculty Members in various subjectareas are organised. Regular lectures onselected subjects are telecast under its

ACTIVE LEARNING VIDEO LECTURECOMMUNICATION (ALVCOM) seriesprogram. MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE(MOOC) movement at GTU already startedsince last 4 years. Massive open onlinecourse (MOOC) concept is there,

Youth Power will be mainsource of transformationof India: Governor

Two student conf er red PhD: 4300students receives degrees in GTUconvocation

Ahmedabad: “India is passing throughtransformation phase. Youth power will bethe main source for the transformation. The degrees which universities areproviding to students is not only to make acareer, but also to transform self, to

at Chandkheda campus on Thursday, 28th

January, 2016.

He told students that technology hasbrought massive changes in our life. Due toglobalisation we are facing toughcompetition. Knowledge revolution andtechnology are becoming engine ofgrowth. GTU is very big university, having486 affiliated colleges. In this ageUniversities have to take steps as a part of

synergy process. Once upon a time we haduniversities like Nalanda, Takshashila and

Vikram University, where students from allover the world were coming to study. Nowtime has changed and our students arepreferring to study abroad. We have tochange this trend. Our Prime Minister ShriNarendra Modi wants more speedytransformation. That’s why he is givingprogrammes like Make in India, Start up &innovation.

Hon’ble Shri C.P.Gurnani, ManagingDirector & Chief Executive Officer of TechMahindra, who is also Vice Chairman – NASSCOM, was the Chief Guest for theConvocation Ceremony. He delivered the

Convocation Address on the occasion. Hesaid that scenario in retail sector ischanging. Similarly every industry willchange as a part of the revolution. Thissituation is of VUCA i.e. Volatile, Uncertain,

Complex, Ambiguous. Yet there are someunderline good news. Nobody can imaginethat A.M.Nayak, who started his career asgraduate engineer trainee can reach topposition in a big company, Dhirubhai

Ambani can become the head of thelargest business empire. Shri Gurnaniadvised students that please don’t stop

Hon’ble Vice Admiral (Retd) Anurag GThapliyal, Director General of Coast Guard(Retd) was the guest of honour. He toldstudents that it is very easy to set a goal, but it is very difficult to achieve it. Collegesteaches that everything and anything ispossible. Hard work has no substitute. Nowit is our responsibility to give back to thesociety. More you give, more you get.Remain r ooted to ground. Don’t stop

anything than excellence. Say what youmean and mean what you say. He gave 5point formula: A=Ability or skill,B=Balancing time, C=Courage,D=Dedication, E=Enjoy what you doing.

Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor ofGTU said that our society and our way oflife has been transformed by technologicaldevelopments over the last two centuries. Most of the developments have beentriggered by needs of the armed forces. Thus Internet and wireless technologies, which have created the mobile revolution, would not have been possible without thesupport from Defence Advanced ResearchProjects Agency of USA. During the last twoyears, GTU has also been trying to involveDefence Research & DevelopmentOrganization of India as a partner in

research for mutual benefit.

GTU is the only technological university, which has been awarded an Incubator bythe National Science & TechnologyEntrepreneurship Development Board,Department of Science & Technology,Government of India. The Department ofIndustries, Government of Gujarat has alsorecognized GTU as a Nodal Centre forchannelizing the help to the start-ups. GTUwould like to develop the relationship withTech Mahindra in all its fields of interest sothat our IT students as well as students indifferent fields of engineering can benefitfrom the relationship.

This year, 4300 students from variousfaculties graduating from various collegesin Gujarat will be receiving degreecertificates on the occasion. Total numberof students getting degrees will be around36,000. Total 148 students were awarded
