To Our Friends and Partners,

Inspired philanthropy is thriving in Placer County and is reflected at the community foundation. In 2016, your investment created a ripple effect of change and growth by providing nearly $740,000 in grants to many worthy organizations. Some of you chose to grow the impact of services provided by local organizations, others felt inspired to give internationally. For us, it continues to be a privilege to help you translate your passion into action and we are honored to be your partner in philanthropy.

In addition to providing these important grants, PCF strengthened our commitment to provide bold leadership in the community and support collaborative problem-solving. We launched Placer Housing Matters, helping to shine a light on the local housing crisis. We provided training to nearly 300 community volunteers at our Nonprofit Leadership Summit. We championed efforts for job growth and economic development in each of Placer County’s downtown districts through our work with California Main Street Alliance. We aligned our scholarship programs for deserving students and strengthened the pipeline of our future workforce.

Placer Community Foundation’s assets grew to $14.5 million and the number of charitable funds at PCF increased to 92, which includes two significant new funds; The Walter and Irmgard Schichtel Fund for disadvantaged youth and the Mary Paolini Fischer Fund for animal welfare. We also welcomed eight new members to our Legacy Society, bringing us to 83 generous and forward-thinking members who’ve left a planned gift or bequest to our community. As donors, you have defined Placer Community Foundation as “professional, trustworthy, conscientious, and compassionate” and you’ve told us that you highly value the knowledge and insights we can share about charitable work going on in our communities. We appreciate and value that trust you have in us as we help you engage in purposeful grantmaking.

Your support is what allows us to work together on solutions that strengthen and enrich our community. Thank you for your generosity and dedication to a brighter future for Placer County. On behalf of Placer Community Foundation’s board and staff, we are grateful to work with you.

Please call us or stop by our office anytime—we’d love to hear your ideas and help you accomplish your philanthropic goals.

In Gratitude,

Continuing a Family Legacy

Vicki and Alan Takagishi descend from two families with deep roots in the community. Vicki and Alan have chosen to leave a gift in their estate plan to Placer Community Foundation which will establish the Alan L. and Vicki E. Takagishi Endowment Fund at PCF. This unrestricted fund will support a variety of causes in their place of home for generations. It’s a perpetual gift exemplifying the pride and care they have for the community in which they built their lives.

Inspired Philanthropy

Protecting Open Space and Wildlife Beyond Their Lifetime

Paul and Andrea McKim named Placer Community Foundation in their estate plan and have directed the Foundation, upon their passing, to support nonprofit organizations locally and nationally that are working to preserve and protect land for wildlife and to support the care and well-being of animals.

A Lifetime of Helping Children and Families

Rick and Kathy Saletta have always worked with kids, especially disadvantaged kids, and after retirement that compassion for children has spilled over into their volunteerism and philanthropy. Rick is on the board for PCF and Kathy is an active member of PCF’s Giving Circle. In addition to the Rick and Kathy 4 Kids donor-advised fund at PCF, they have planned for a gift through bequest and are members of PCF’s Legacy Society.

We know that our fund will do the most good because

they’re a part of our community—there’s a high level of trust.

You can look the people at PCF in the eye and know that you

can trust them—it’s been that way with everyone we’ve met.

—Paul McKim

The Foundation is committed to the greater

good and reflects the tight-knit community

within Placer County. There are multiple ways of

giving and you can count on the Foundation’s

board and staff to closely care for and stay on

top of your wishes.

—Rick Saletta

Purposeful Grantmaking

Gold Country Wildlife Rescue

Amount: $2,000 from the J.A.E. Fund for Animal and Environmental Welfare

Purpose: To support operations of their new, expanded facility including the purchase of new cages for the many and varied animals they are called upon to house and rehabilitate in Placer County.

Why it matters: Gold Country Wildlife Rescue takes in injured and orphaned wildlife where they are rescued, rehabilitated and released at no cost to the public. Their team of staff and volunteers help thousands of animals each year return to their rightful place in the wild.

Child Advocates of Placer County

Amount: $67,250 from multiple funds at Placer Community Foundation

Purpose: To provide programs, services, and laptop computers to hundreds of at-risk and foster youth. These programs result in a reduction in arrest rates and substance abuse, an increase in educational success, and development of independent living skills, all of which provide a stronger sense of belonging, empowerment and a bright future.

Why it matters: Young people are the upcoming stewards of our communities. They are future parents, our workforce, our leaders, our community citizens.

The Axiom Youth Center in Lincoln

Amount: $5,000 from the Giving Circle at Placer Community Foundation

Purpose: Allows at-risk high school students the opportunity to form an after school Student Leadership Team where members gain leadership skills, create meaningful relationships with adults and peers, gain employable experience, and a greater community connection.

Why it matters: The Student Leadership Team is driven and designed by the students themselves. This builds platforms of success for students to realize and utilize their untapped potential.

Investing resources for the greater good.

Bold Leadership

Helping Local Nonprofits Grow and Thrive

270 local nonprofit employees, board members and volun-teers attended PCF’s 6th annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit. The Summit, a key part of the Foundation’s Nonprofit Initiative, is intended to teach practical skills to the leaders of our nonprofit sector so it will continue to thrive and grow to meet demand. This year’s training was facilitated by Becky Lunders of teamWorks with a focus on building a solid foundation of volunteer leadership.

Fostering our Future Workforce

PCF worked with First 5 Placer, First 5 California, Placer County Health and Human Services, Placer County Office of Education and Sierra College to bring Dowell Myers, Ph.D. to the Dietrich Theatre at Sierra College. Myers presented on our children’s doubled importance for a successful new future. He urged, “If we intend to maintain our economy we must get more serious about educating our future workforce.”

To that end, our John G. and Lillian M. Walsh Family Scholarship Fund awarded 11 students to attend Sierra College to pursue a degree or certificate in Mechatronics, Engineering or Welding—addressing a growing need for professionals in these fields.

Quality, stable, affordable homes in a vibrant community contributes to individual and community success throughout Placer County. Attainable and well-located housing options are at the heart of individual economic opportunities and strong local economies.

Given the current housing crisis, PCF has created Placer Housing Matters, a project with the goal of educating the public and shining the light on the need for attainable housing for our workforce in Placer County. To learn more, visit PlacerHousingMatters.org.
