Some “Good to Know” Facts about ….
Butterflies In Canada, 302 species of butterfly are represented from coast to coast; there are more than 20000 species in the world. These beautiful insects live in our gardens and most people enjoy watching them flying from flower to flower or resting on a sunny spot. Where do butterflies live? Butterflies can be found all over the world, most of them live in tropical countries where it is warm and because of the big variety of flowers and plants they have plenty of food sources. The only places you will never see a butterfly are in Antarctica and in some of the deserts because they would not be able to survive there. What do butterflies look like? The adult butterfly has four wings, which are covered with tiny scales that give them their colorful appearance, as each scale is a single color. They have six legs and two antennas with which they can sense the air for nectar and they have taste receptors on their feet. Butterflies range in size from a tiny ⅛ inch to almost 12 inches. Butterflies also have very good eyesight and can differentiate colors. How do butterflies become butterflies? All butterflies develop through a process which is called “ metamorphosis”. This is a greek word and means “ change in shape” or transformation. There are four stages in the metamorphosis of butterflies. First stage: The adult female butterfly usually attaches her eggs on the leaves of plants. This is the beginning of a new butterfly’s life cycle. Second stage: From the egg hatches the caterpillar or “larva”. Caterpillars are born very tiny and their only job is to eat and eat and eat. As the caterpillar grows, it splits its skin and sheds it about 4 or 5 times. Caterpillars can grow 100 times their size. Third stage: When the caterpillar is full grown, it becomes a pupa, which is also called “chrysalis “. The pupa is usually attached to the underside of a leaf where it will stay for some weeks and undergo big changes. For us it looks like the former caterpillar is wrapped up like a cocoon, but inside, the transformation from the pupa to the adult butterfly is happening, legs, wings, eyes and all other body parts are developing. Finally, the adult butterfly emerges from the pupa. Fourth stage: After the adult butterfly has emerged, it needs to rest for 3 or 4 hours before it is ready to spread its wings and fly out in the world. The adult butterfly will search for a mate in order to reproduce and then the cycle of life will start all over again. Butterflies can live from one week to up to a year, depending on the species. Some hibernate during the winter, others migrate to the south just as birds do. Monarch butterflies are known for their long migration, they will travel a long distance, sometimes over 4000km. Butterflies face many predators in their short lives, some of them are birds, wasps, ants, snakes, lizards, frogs, dragonflies, rats and spiders. Butterflies have very delicate wings. Do not touch them or you could ruin their wings so they can’t fly!
