Dear reader,

In the second half of last year we proudly pre-sented you the first issue of our newest com-munication tool: RENSON® Inspiration. In the first edition of this magazine, we dig deeper into the topic of sun protection. ‘Acoustics’ is the buzz word of this issue. With constantly increa sing outdoor noise levels affecting our living and working environment, acoustic com-fort is becoming more and more essential, even when dealing with ventilation and sun protec-tion. RENSON® has been working on this issue for quite some time now and has been able to build up a lot of experience. We even have our own testing laboratory where we can carry out the necessary tests in the area of acoustic damping and develop project-related solutions.

The success of RENSON® is based on this ex-tensive know-how, which the company has built up over the years and is also the basis for the development of innovative solu tions. Innovation is a recurring theme when you take a closer look at RENSON®. That will not change in the future. We always want to be ready with systems that offer a solution to the problems of tomorrow. We also continue in optimising our existing products in terms of comfort, design and durability: Oxyvent®, Fixscreen® EVO Next Generation, Fixvent® Mono AK EVO, revolutio-nary sun protection system IRISS, Camargue® New Edition, argenta® invisidoor® DL and AX, …

Read more on the topic of acoustics but also about our strengths and options in the field of ventilation and sun protection in this RENSON® Inspiration brochure.

“This noise is making me absolutely crazy!” Whoever says this sentence, is really not exag-gerating. Noise is part of our life. More than 90 % of the people have problems with exter-nal noise: planes, traffic, building projects, loud music, even playing children seem to disturb us more and more. Our buildings need to be adapted, so that we are protected against this noise. Therefore, the improvement of the acous-tic comfort is a main topic when developing ventilation and sun protection systems.

The acoustic comfort is often forgotten. It is, however, essential for a good health and com-fort of the owners and improves the productivity of the employees. A good acoustic insulation of a building guarantees better living and working conditions and improves the relationship be-tween the users.

Being able to control the level and frequency of noise needs to be taken into account when de-signing a sound absorbing façade for buildings. The different sources of sounds, including those from kids playing outside to fast moving and ur-ban traffic, must be taken into account. The level of noise may vary as well as the frequency. Fast traffic noises do not equal the lower motor noise of buses and other slow driving urban traffic. The sound of airplanes and trains has yet another sound. This highlights the complexity of reducing low tone sound when designing a façade.

In some countries there are building regulations related to acoustics; in other countries no regu-lations are available. As a specialist in natural and acoustic ventilation we provide solutions that create a healthy indoor climate in buildings and meet the acoustic requirements. An extensi-ve R&D department can make use of the latest technologies in order to accomplish the neces-sary analysis and tests and works together with international organisations to provide innovative solutions in ventilation and sun protection.

Ventilation and acoustics

Window vents guarantee a healthy indoor air quality through the continuous supply of fresh air. However, people say that the supply of air also means noise is entering the building. For installations in buildings along a busy road or in a noisy neighbourhood specially developed

acoustic window vents can be used. These are equipped with acoustic foam and keep the noise outside as much as possible.

Solar shading and acoustics

External solar shading blocks the sunrays before getting in contact with the glass façades, avoi-ding overheating of the interior. As these systems are installed in the façade of a building, it is difficult to believe they can influence the acous-tic comfort inside the building. Due to specific installation above the window frame and the opening in the box, e.g. for sun screens, these systems definitely can increase the level of noise inside the building. By integrating acoustic foam in the vent, the acoustic insulation of this kind of systems is significantly improved.

Solar shading, ventilation and acoustics

Sometimes ventilation and sun protection are combined in one product. Therefore, we com-bine a self-regulating window vent and a wind- resistant sun screen. This means the fresh air is entering the building through the vent in which the screen is integrated. For this installation, the vent has an opening on the internal side of the building. Compared to the installation with a sun screen, the performance of the acoustic foam in this setup is even more important.

Louvres with acoustic blades

such as lots of traffic and the noise of throbbing engines in a car park. Cooling installations of schools, the industry as well as power sta tions can also produce a lot of noise. For this kind of installations, it is necessary to keep the noise inside the building to reduce the inconveniences. Specially developed louvres and continuous lou-vre systems (CLS) with acoustic blades result in an extremely functional wall cladding, which allows fresh air to enter the building while pre-venting the noise of cars and machines to get out of the building.

In some applications, however, it isn’t important to prevent external noise from entering the buil-ding. It is clear that malls in the middle of city centres cause inconveniences for the neighbours:

Wall cladding and acousticsLouvre panels and the Linius® continuous louvre system of RENSON® are aesthetic aluminium so-lutions, allowing airflow and protecting the buil-ding against wind loads, rain and vermin. They are also ideal for concealing unsightly equipment or façades. Fitted with acoustic material these systems also block noise. These acoustic blades are made of extruded aluminium, filled with in-organic, non-flammable mineral wool and are perforated at the back. Today, RENSON® offers a complete set of louvre panels and acoustic wall cladding solutions with noise reduction ran-ging from 6 to 17 dB Rw (C;Ctr), or even higher.

No noise pollution for the people living next to Kaufland in Marl, Germany

Shopping centres must be visible, regardless of whether they are located in the centre or the suburbs. An impressive façade must lure the customers. Large panes of glass are display windows but also provide a pleasant light in the shopping centre. If that glass is then combined with concrete and metal, you end up with a very inviting façade. Louvre panels and aluminium blade wall systems not only contribute to the beautiful look of the building, they also have a functional role, such as ventilating the interior, hiding installations or reducing noises.

A shopping centre in the middle of the city, like the Kaufland centre in Marl, Germany, creates a lot of traffic noise for the neighbourhood. Parking garages are also usually equipped with acoustic aluminium louvre panels and wall cladding. The high level of noise reduction is achieved by filling the blades with inorganic, non-combustible mineral wool. “After extensive research, we chose the Linius® L.150ACS from RENSON® for the shopping centre in Marl. The architects from the EPA Planngsgruppe GmbH explain: “This blade, which was extensively tested by the international research institute IFT in Rosenheim, combines a physical free area of 34.3 % with a noise reduction of Rw (C;Ctr) 11 (-1;-2) dB and thus perfectly meets the requirements for this project.”

Greenbridge or ‘House of renewable energy’

In 2004 the University of Ghent built a ‘Greenbridge incubator’ on the science park with thirty offices focusing on the guidance and support of starting and growing businesses, preferably with a focus on sustainability. The site was recently expanded with a second incubator wing giving room to twenty-five additional offices, a seminar room for 220 people and a redesigned demonstration hall for innovative and creative products, better known as The Energy Box. Greenbridge, architecture studio Johan Verborgh and engineering company Ingenium created a model in the field of energy sustainability with a K level of 20 and an E value of 53. Monitoring is the key word of choice.

The offices on the first floor are equipped with demand-controlled type C ventilation from RENSON®. To increase the performance, a heat pump recovers heat from the exhausted air. “The Screenvent® Mistral AK combines a natural self-regulating and sound absorbing air supply with an integrated wind-resistant sun protection screen. The mechanical extraction is done with CO2 controlled adjusting valves. Even the supply is CO2-controlled at certain levels,” says architect Johan Verborgh. “Thanks to burglar-proof louvre panels – type 431 WK2 – with large gaps, big airflows naturally cool the building at night. The structural aluminium sun protection, type Icarus®, on the front and south façades prevents the rooms from overheating.”

Maitland on the “De Horst Estate”

In the spring of 2012, the Maitland Theatre opened its doors. It was immediately considered a tribute to Charles Maitland, founding father of De Baak, who also established the foundations for a special learning environment for De Baak, powered by elements from art, culture and nature.

Maitland is a completely round building, that looks like a disc rising from the ground, partly sunk into the ground of the De Horst Estate in Driebergen (Netherlands). This building serves as a theatre, where meetings can be organised for up to 278 people: conferences, lectures, theatre and music performances. It is equipped with the latest audiovisual equipment. The building is extremely versatile. A large part of the stand can be folded up, it has a flexible wall and a grandstand on the roof.

Large glass panels with a maximum height of 7 m allow enough daylight into the building. “On warmer days we have to be careful that the sun does not end up overheating the room,” says architect Ferdinand van Dam from OTH Architects. “After a thorough evaluation of the various options, we chose the wind proof Fixscreen® from RENSON®. We worked together with the firm’s project team to develop a solution for the windows, as we needed a height of 7 m. This is definitely not a standard solution, but RENSON® worked with us to find a suitable solution to our ‘problem’.”

The LEGI laboratory was in urgent need of expansion. The architectural office Unanime was assigned the project. They drew up a master plan consisting of the partial renovation of the main building and two new buildings to be built to the existing main building: GEMME and CORIOLIS. ‘GEMME’ includes the reception area of LEGI and consists of 250 m² on the ground floor and 325 m² on the first floor. On the ground floor you will find the reception, a cafeteria, five administrative offices, an archiving room, a storage room and sanitary facilities. On the first floor there is a meeting room, an office for two people and 16 individual offices for the researchers. ‘CORIOLIS’ consists of four floors and includes offices, a chemistry laboratory, a utility room and a storage room. Architect Sébastien Feyeux of Unanime explains the concept of the façade. “The façade of the building is made of wooden frames, cladded with larch wood slats arranged in a random order, horizontally or vertically. The whole purpose is to create a dynamic façade which will adapt over time. The design was achieved in cooperation with COVERMETAL using a variant of the dynamic sun protection system Cilium® from RENSON®. On the south side, hori-zontal folding shutters were installed with wooden slats. In the openings of the eastern and western façades, vertical slats were mounted on structures that open sideways.” In addition to this eye catching architecture, the designers also focused on energy efficiency and sustainability of the buildings by using shed roofing, ventilation and natural cooling.

This year, the patients and staff are officially moving into the new Southmead Hospital in Bristol. This is to be one of the major health care institutions across Europe. The Brunel building, at the centre of the site, will not only accommodate 802 beds, but will also have casualty, neurology and neuro-psychiatry departments, a burns unit, and orthopaedic, general medical, surgical and therapeutic services.

The new buildings of Southmead Hospital offer many advantages for patients, visitors and employees. From the main entrance you can easily get to your specific destination in the building. But you can also go to the inviting atrium with lots of natural light and good air quality. The casualty department has a separate entrance. Furthermore, rooms with lots of light, colour and artwork, create a pleasant indoor climate.

To ensure good air quality in the rooms and other spaces, the designers from NBBJ & Building Design Partnership installed Invisivent® EVO window ventilators from RENSON®. They ensure that there is a continuous supply of fresh air in the rooms. These window ventilators were adapted by the RENSON® project team, so that they could easily be integrated into the proposed design.

Healthbox® Smartzone The demand-controlled ventilation system that RENSON® introduced with C+® under the slogan “VENTILATE WHERE YOU LIVE” already brought about heat savings with the guarantee of a healthy indoor climate. With the Healthbox® Smartzone they went one step further. To ensure even better indoor air quality, they also used nightly exhaust ventilation in the bedrooms in addition to the demand-controlled extraction in damp areas. The demand-controlled ventilation system controls each bedroom with a specific control module. This ensures an even better energy level in a cost-effective way.

• 8 connection points to dissipate the air in a demand-controlled manner towards 8 rooms

• Demand-controlled ventilation based on moisture and/or VOC or CO2

• Automatic adjustment of nominal extraction rates at initial installation

Easyflex® Easyflex® is a flexible plastic air duct system with high performance in all areas: the combination of high air flows at low air velocities results in a very quiet way of ventilation. The high air density of the whole ensures, in turn, that the pre-programmed flow rates in all areas are met. An excellent distribution of the compressive stress on the duct and a limited height ensures that the ducts can be set in the pressure position and even in concrete. The simple structure of the system results in a faster installation time and also easily allows you to make changes afterwards.

• Flexible air duct system: antistatic and antibacterial treatment• Limited height: placement in cement, concrete, false walls• Easy and quick installation• High air density• Large dimensioning - High flow - Low air velocities - Acoustic comfort
