Sail On Titanic
Emotionally chargedCelebrate is perhaps not the right word when talking about the sinking of
RMS Titanic. It is 100 years since that fateful night and it seemed appropriate
to mark the occasion somehow. Most of you will have seen the magnificent film
version, and some of you may have seen the very powerful and atmospheric
stage musical. We have included music from both of these in tonight’s concert.
We have also widened our scope a little with songs about the sea itself and the
rivers that flow into it.
Again I hope I have stretched the singers, especially with the opening of
Vaughan Williams’ ‘Sea Symphony’, one of the most arresting openings in the
classical choral repertoire – ‘Behold The Sea Itself’. They have certainly risen
to the challenge, as always.
After the huge success of our Christmas concert, this term has been completely
different. Much more emotionally charged in some places; dare I say it, more
dramatic. There have been tears. And as always, lots of laughter. The spirit in the
rehearsals has been as uplifting as ever as we piece together what we hope will
be a dramatic and enjoyable concert for you.
It’s so good to have you with us.
Gary
On 10 April 1912RMS Titanic sailed from
Southampton with 2,200passengers and crew. Four days
later she collided with aniceberg and sank. Only 700 souls
survived. 14 April 2012 marksthe 100th anniversary of
that tragic event.
Gary GriffithsInspiration Music DirectorI have been singing for as long as I can remember.Probably my first public performance was singingthe ‘Twelve Days Of Christmas’ at Tettenhall WoodInfant School in Wolverhampton, where I grew upin the 70s. The Grammar School was my majormusical influence – music was everywhere. SchoolChoir, Choral Society, Musical Theatre Group, JazzBand – alongside the Youth Orchestra (where Iwas principal oboist) and the Concert Band(principal percussion).
Maths (my other passion) ran alongside for while, but when it came to Universityit didn’t stand a chance really. It had to be music, and so to York. Threewonderful years of almost constant music making (being a singer, oboist andpercussionist meant I could be in every group going) also included being ChorusMaster for York Light Opera, and Musical Director for Pickering Musical Society –which in turn led to my own business arranging music for choirs and orchestras.
I was by now (mid–90s) a tenor (yes really) in the Choir of York Minster with allthat entails; daily services in the Cathedral as well as many world tours, concertsand recordings. After 18 years of what was in the beginning a dream job, I leftand became part of the creative team behind the formation of SingLive; againwhat in the beginning was a dream job.
Now, with Inspiration as my sole focus, I really do have my dream job. Weeklyrehearsals are a joy. Our trips around the country and abroad are like taking afamily on holiday – even if it is a rather extended familyof 400. And I do think of the singers as just that.My musical family.
Andy BoothAccompanistAndy, who was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, started learning music when he was three yearsold. A natural at theatre organ, he progressedonto classical piano where he excelled. In his earlyteenage years it was a very natural step for him toprogress into arranging and conducting where hestarting with the school choirs and then onto thelocal operatic societies and adult choirs.
Andy now regularly MDs the Sheffield Theatrespantomime (Evolution Productions – 2009 SnowWhite, 2010 Peter Pan and 2011 Sleeping Beauty) and was the MD for thereopening of the Crucible Theatre (2009 Crucible Awakes). He has nationalcredits including ‘Rejoice!’ – 2010 Orchestra of Opera North and Inspiration UKchoir, ‘Viva Las Vegas’ – 2009 An Elvis Tribute Tour, ‘Full Monty’ – 2010 SheffieldCity Hall, ‘Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street’ – 2011 SheffieldLyceum. His own orchestra, The Fono Philharmonic, regularly performs at theBarlow Proms and is often out and about or found in professional orchestra pits.
His TV appearances include concerts with the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus(ITV) and besides having his music played on the radio, he has also been knownto appear on air coaching local radio celebrities (Becky Measures and SeanGoldsmith – Peak 107FM).
As MD, he has worked with a wide range of people including Shona Lindsay, PaulKeeting, Toyah Wilcox, Hayley Tamadonn, Pauline Mclynn, Matt Ford, Toby Foster,Bernie Clifton, Nigel Planer, Gemma Sutton, Gemma Wardle, Jeff Hooper andLance Ellington.
His passion though is the Carolare Choir (Chesterfield), which he still runs everyweek and was started in 1933 by his great grandfather. In itself it is a choir ofnote having had such illustrious singers as Kathleen Ferrier, Isobel Baillie andRobert Easton as soloists for various concerts.

Titanic received six icewarnings on the day of the
collision. The wireless operator, who was preoccupied with
transmitting passengermessages, ignored
them all.

Titanic carried 1,178 lifeboatseats. The legal requirement
was 962. A total of 2,208 lifeboatseats were needed. The law at thattime based the number of lifeboats
required on the gross registeredtonnage of a ship, not her
passenger capacity.
The ship’s band playedmusic up to the last few
minutes before Titanic sank. None survived. The last songsthey played included ‘Songe
d’Automne’ and the hymn‘Nearer My God To Thee’.
The temperature ofthe Atlantic at the time
of sinking was 31°F. CharlesJoughin was the only person to
survive the ice cold Atlanticwater. He reportedly had
been drinking heavily.

Historically RMS Titanicis known as the ship thatwas called ‘unsinkable’.
However, even though she wascalled so in news stories afterthe sinking, neither The White
Star Line nor Harland andWolff ever declared
her unsinkable.
Inspiration at Disneyland Paris performingthe first ever Christmas Choral Celebration
In the final momentsit was reported thatpassengers rode the
exercise bicycles in thegymnasium to pass time
before the ship sank.
Inspiration teamChristine RowlandsChristine has been working with Gary and Inspiration sinceits conception. As well as singing in the choir Christinechoreographs and stage manages the Leeds choir, she alsoassists with the lighting for the Newcastle concert. On theday of the concert she has to fit 300 plus singers onto therisers by voice, friendship and needs. This is no mean featand she couldn’t do it without her team of volunteers.
Christine says, “It is wonderful performing and workingwith everyone in Inspiration and I’m looking forward toa calm sailing tonight.”
Barbara SumroyAfter discovering the man called ‘Gary Griffiths’ 13 yearsago when I was 18!!, I was ecstatic when he started upInspiration and honoured when asked to be RehearsalManager. I enjoy my Monday evening ‘Sing-a-long-a-Gary-and-Andy-and-299-other-singers’ so much,I never want it to end.
Although the subject of this concert is the sadremembrance of so many lives lost, you will be takenalong a journey of different emotions. Make sure youhave your hankies handy for the tears and laughter too!
Inspiration is also very honoured to be able to singalongside The Orchestra of Opera North.
Jane LarderJane has always enjoyed singing, but it wasn’t until shemet Gary that she had the chance to do more than singin the church choir. She looks forward to greeting herInspiration family each week and sharing their laughterand tears.
Jane says, “The extra space for rehearsals at the CivicHall means that, as long as Christine can fit us on stage,we have room to expand and I hope to meet even moreold and new Inspirationers after Easter.”

14 years prior to theTitanic tragedy, author
Morgan Robertson wrote anovel called Futility. This fictional
novel was about the sinkingof the largest ship ever built
after hitting an iceberg inthe Atlantic Ocean.
