Here are two questions we are asked often about graduating student athletes: May a UCLA donor or fan send student-athletes a graduation gift? No. It is not permissible for UCLA donors or fans to give graduation gifts or other celebratory gifts to student-athletes. Under NCAA rules, such gifts are considered impermissible extra benefits regardless of their value. Do NCAA extra benefits rules apply to our former student-athletes even though their eligibility is exhausted and they no longer are attending UCLA? NCAA rules hold former student-athletes to the same standards as current student-athletes for the purposes of awards and benefits. When student-athletes play their last game for UCLA, the athletic department and its boosters generally are not allowed to reward them with gifts or additional benefits even years later. This rule is in place to prevent coaches from using post-eligibility rewards as a means of recruiting top athletes, explaining that they cannot receive such benefits as a student-athlete but with the promise of such gifts after their playing days are over. RECENT BOOSTER NCAA VIOLATIONS - DON’T LET IT HAPPEN HERE! In recent months, the following schools were sanctioned by the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions for NCAA violations involving boosters: Sacramento State – Impermissible financial aid assistance in the form of tuition payments were provided to student-athletes by a booster. University of San Francisco – Former head coach allowed a booster to have impermissible contacts with prospects and prospects’ parents and impermissible benefits were provided, including free rounds of golf, lodging and transportation. University of Tennessee Chattanooga – Three tennis players received reduced-cost housing and use of cars from a booster. The head coach failed to meet his responsibility when he knew about this arrangement yet failed to inform the school’s compliance office or inquire if it was ok. Penalties for the schools above included recruiting restrictions, scholarship reduc- tions, multi-year probations and post-season bans. The involved boosters received multi-year disassociation penalties involving the loss of all privileges and benefits, including exclusion from institutional athletic facilities and home athletic events. Member schools are required by the NCAA to be diligent in preventing boosters from providing impermissible benefits to prospects and student-athletes, both by monitoring booster interaction with student-athletes and through targeted booster education. Nathan Anderson: “Excluding athletic venues, my favorite place on campus is the top of Janss Steps. There no better view on campus than at the top of these iconic steps.” Neema Barbod: “The grassy area next to Janss steps. A favorite spot to take a nap between classes or study sessions during my time as a student. The whole area between Royce Hall and Powell Library at the top of Janss steps is collectively my ideal favorite spot on campus.” Gina Garrett: “My favorite place is the Fowler Museum. It's the polar opposite from the world of athletics—where games rely on quick solutions for a team's success— and where the arts is all about personal contemplation and how each work is individually interpreted.” Alicia Junker: “My favorite place on UCLA’s campus is the top of Janss Steps. Every time I walk up these steps and the top of Royce Hall and Powell Library slowly appear, with the landscape of UCLA Athletics resting behind me, I am reminded of not only how beautiful this campus is, but how many inspiring and transformational individuals have walked these same steps. I also love that Coach Wooden used these exact steps to condition his student-athletes.” Kat Lauer: “My favorite place on campus is between Royce Hall and Powell Library. The picturesque buildings really encompass the tradition and history of UCLA. They also happen to be two of the four original buildings at UCLA, which were built in 1929. The architectural designs of each left an impression on me from my very first visit to UCLA as a child.” Emily Lerner: My favorite place is the Murphy Sculpture Garden in north campus. Besides being able to look at artwork by Rodin, Matisse, and Miro, among others, it’s the best place to relax on a bench and soak in the quiet and beauty of UCLA campus.” Jill Machuca: “My favorite place is Ackerman Union. I love the student store, book store and the food!” Josh Rebholz: “My favorite venue is Royce Hall. I saw Coldplay there in 2014 and it was incredible. That venue is just remarkable.” Zack Rosenfeld: “Without a doubt, my favorite is Royce Quad. Every year we are fortunate to hold my favorite event of the year, the Football Kickoff Dinner, here, so for me Royce Quad represents the epicenter of the UCLA campus. Nothing beats this spot atop Janss Steps, in between Royce Hall and Powell Library, with views of the Bel-Air hills and our Athletics venues.” Lydell Sargeant: “Powell Library. It’s a beautiful building, inside and out.Brian Smith: “Janss Steps. These 87 steps were the main entrance to UCLA when founded in Westwood. At the top of the steps, you have the four iconic original buildings to the east. To the west, you have a wonderful vista looking towards Annen- berg Soccer Stadium, Intramural Field, Drake Stadium and the dorms.” Taylor Swearingen: “My favorite place is Dickson Plaza, located between Royce Hall and Powell Library. Standing there at the heart of campus always gives me a special feeling and reminds me of the great history of UCLA.” GET TO KNOW YOUR WOODEN ATHLETIC FUND STAFF! UPCOMING EVENT Director’s Dinner - May 21, 2018 On May 21, UCLA Athletics and Dan and Anne Marie Guerrero hosted our most generous Wooden Athletic Fund donors for the annual Director’s Dinner. Held at a different UCLA athletic venue for donors at the Director’s Circle and Wooden Benefactor levels each year, this year’s event was held at the Spieker Aquatics Center, home to UCLA Water Polo and UCLA Swimming and Diving. Student- athletes from our 2017-18 NCAA Championship teams welcomed guests as they entered the venue, and posed for photos with attendees before moving on to the cocktail reception. This year’s event had everything: the finest five-course dinner, wines and artisanal cocktails, UCLA Diving student-athletes performing world-class dives off the diving platform, a group of synchronized swimmers, and a wonderful evening and ambience with nearly all of UCLA’s head coaches in attendance. During dinner, each head coach spoke about their 2017-2018 season and gave insider updates on what to expect in the 2018-2019 year, but, above all else, this was UCLA and our head coaches’ chance to express our sincere gratitude to our most influential donors who make a tremendous impact in the lives of UCLA’s student-athletes and so dramatically enhance their ability to succeed. If you are interested in more information regarding next year’s Director’s Dinner, please call 310-206-3302, email [email protected], or visit www.WoodenAthleticFund.com. GRADUATION AND STUDENT-ATHLETES

This month, about 120 Bruin student-athletes will attend graduation ceremonies and will receive a coveted UCLA diploma. Here are two questions we are asked often about graduating student athletes:

May a UCLA donor or fan send student-athletes a graduation gift? No. It is not permissible for UCLA donors or fans to give graduation gifts or other celebratory gifts to student-athletes. Under NCAA rules, such gifts are considered impermissible extra benefits regardless of their value.

Do NCAA extra benefits rules apply to our former student-athletes even though their eligibility is exhausted and they no longer are attending UCLA?NCAA rules hold former student-athletes to the same standards as current student-athletes for the purposes of awards and benefits.

In recent months, the following schools were sanctioned by the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions for NCAA violations involving boosters:

Sacramento State – Impermissible financial aid assistance in the form of tuition payments were provided to student-athletes by a booster.

The head coach failed to meet his responsibility when he knew about this arrangement yet failed to inform the school’s compliance oce or inquire if it was ok.

Penalties for the schools above included recruiting restrictions, scholarship reduc-tions, multi-year probations and post-season bans.

“It has been a true privilege to represent the Bruins. UCLA Athletics has given me more opportunities than I could have ever thought possible. The environment of optimism and respect in our Athletics Department truly changes lives. This environment is made possible by our donors, who ensure that we have every tool to realize our academic and athletic dreams. I can’t thank our Bruin donors enough for all they do for UCLA student-athletes.”

Excluding athletic venues, what is your favorite place on UCLA’s campus?

Nathan Anderson: “Excluding athletic venues, my favorite place on campus is the top of Janss Steps. There no better view on campus than at the top of these iconic steps.”Neema Barbod: “The grassy area next to Janss steps. The architectural designs of each left an impression on me from my very first visit to UCLA as a child.”Emily Lerner: “My favorite place is the Murphy Sculpture Garden in north campus. Besides being able to look at artwork by Rodin, Matisse, and Miro, among others, it’s the best place to relax on a bench and soak in the quiet and beauty of UCLA campus.”Jill Machuca: “My favorite place is Ackerman Union. I love the student store, book store and the food!”Josh Rebholz: “My favorite venue is Royce Hall. I saw Coldplay there in 2014 and it was incredible. That venue is just remarkable.” Zack Rosenfeld: “Without a doubt, my favorite is Royce Quad. Every year we are fortunate to hold my favorite event of the year, the Football Kicko Dinner, here, so for me Royce Quad represents the epicenter of the UCLA campus. Nothing beats this spot atop Janss Steps, in between Royce Hall and Powell Library, with views of the Bel-Air hills and our Athletics venues.”Lydell Sargeant: “Powell Library. It’s a beautiful building, inside and out.” Brian Smith: “Janss Steps. These 87 steps were the main entrance to UCLA when founded in Westwood. At the top of the steps, you have the four iconic original buildings to the east. To the west, you have a wonderful vista looking towards Annen-berg Soccer Stadium, Intramural Field, Drake Stadium and the dorms.” Taylor Swearingen: “My favorite place is Dickson Plaza, located between Royce Hall and Powell Library. Standing there at the heart of campus always gives me a special feeling and reminds me of the great history of UCLA.”

Director’s Dinner - May 21, 2018 On May 21, UCLA Athletics and Dan and Anne Marie Guerrero hosted our most generous Wooden Athletic Fund donors for the annual Director’s Dinner. Held at a dierent UCLA athletic venue for donors at the Director’s Circle and Wooden Benefactor levels each year, this year’s event was held at the Spieker Aquatics Center, home to UCLA Water Polo and UCLA Swimming and Diving. Student-athletes from our 2017-18 NCAA Championship teams welcomed guests as they entered the venue, and posed for photos with attendees before moving on to the cocktail reception. This year’s event had everything: the finest five-course dinner, wines and artisanal cocktails, UCLA Diving student-athletes performing world-class dives o the diving platform, a group of synchronized swimmers, and a wonderful evening and ambience with nearly all of UCLA’s head coaches in attendance.
