Recruiting seasons are classified into four distinct periods: evalua- tion, contact, quiet and dead. Here are their definitions: Evaluation Period: A time when coaches may go off-campus to evaluate the athletic skills and academic qualifications of prospects, but may not have off-campus personal contact. Coaches may observe a prospect’s game or practice, and may go to the prospect’s school and visit with his/her coach, guidance counselor or teachers. Evaluation periods occur throughout the year. Coaches may have contact during this time only if a prospect comes to the institution’s campus. Contact Period: A time when coaches may have in-person, off-campus contact with a prospect and his/her family. Home visits take place during this time. Coaches are limited to three off-cam- pus contacts during a prospect’s senior year (Basketball allows contacts in junior year). Quiet Period: A time when coaches may not make in-person recruiting contacts with prospects and their family members except on the institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus contacts or evaluations may be made during a quiet period. Dead Period: A time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evalua- tions on or off the institution's campus. Prospects may not visit campuses during this time. It is ok for coaches and staff to write or telephone a prospective student-athlete during a dead period. Dead periods usually surround the initial National Letter of Intent signing dates to ensure that the prospect does not have the pressure of in-person contact while trying to decide where to sign. Other dead periods may be during a holiday or coach’s convention. This is designed to give coaches some relief from recruiting. We will include more information about recruiting rules in the next segment of “Recruiting 101.” For questions, please contact Dan Goldberg, Assistant Athletic Director Compliance at [email protected] or (310) 206-3302.
