The inaugural P.T.S.A. Charity Golf Classic will be held on April 2 at Cannon Ridge Golf Club. The final Principal’s Coffee for this school year will be held on April 6 from 8:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. Please feel free to drop by for refreshments and an opportunity to visit. Mid-Term Exams will be April 5-7; the third nine weeks grading period will end on April 7, and report cards will be sent home with students on April 15. Spring break will begin on April 16, and classes will resume on April 25. Parent/Teacher confer- ences will be April 28 from 3:00—5:00 P.M. Appointments are necessary, so please con- tact the main office to schedule a time to meet with your child’s teachers. Our spring athletic teams have begun a full and rigorous schedule. Softball, boys’ and girls’ tennis, and the track and field teams will practice and compete here at James Mon- roe. The lacrosse, boys’ soccer, and girls’ soccer teams will continue to play their games at Maury Stadium, and the baseball teams will play at Armstrong Field which is located beside Walker-Grant Middle School. Please join us in support of our spring sports teams. Students in grades nine through eleven have met individually with their guidance counse- lor regarding their course requests for the 2011-2012 school year. These course selec- tions are extremely important, and each student has a copy of what was chosen. I en- courage you to review carefully your student’s selections, and I suggest you contact his/ her guidance counselor if you have any questions or concerns. The process of creating the master schedule is underway. As our underclassmen are making plans for the next school year, many of our seniors are receiving letters of acceptance from colleges. Their excitement over what the future holds is understandable, however, it is imperative that they continue to put forth consistent effort as they approach the culmination of their high school years. With the onset of the final quarter, I hope that all students will remain focused as there is yet so much to do. I hope all of you have had the opportunity to obtain your usernames and passwords for the Schoolnet Parent Portal. At the informational session on March 30, we also provided information on how to calculate your student’s grade point average and information relat- ing to bullying and cyberbullying. The power point used in the information session is post- ed on our website. I also encourage you to visit the school counseling website for addi- tional information. Sincerely, John B. Dear Parents and Friends: The month of April is upon us, and with it will come many exciting events at James Mon-roe High School. The inaugural P.T.S.A. The next meeting of the Gifted Education and Differentiation Advisory Committee is scheduled for April 6, 2011, at 4:00 P.M. in the library at Hugh Mercer Elementary School. All seniors who have been accepted to a college, university, or the military should

post their name and acceptance on the board in the counseling center. We love to

On March 4-6 the Marketing DECA students represented James Monroe High School in a manner that would make everyone in the community proud. The following chapter and individual awards were won: Chapter Awards—2011 DECA State Leadership Conference Preferred Chapter Trophy for Annual Re-

port, Virginia DECA Day Award, DECA Chapter Membership Super Star Award. Individual Student Awards—Dominique Durante placed third in Sports and Entertainment Market-

ing, Kellie Martin placed third in Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Audrey Dyer placed 6th in Hotel and Lodging Marketing . These three students will attend the National DECA Competition in Orlando, Florida, on April 30—May 3.

In March the James Monroe chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America attended the German-na Regional Leadership Conference. Congratulations to Kiersten White for placing second in the Public Speaking event. The JM FLBA Chapter received the Germanna Achievement Award for Excellence. Upcoming FBLA events include: State FBLA Leadership Conference on April 8 and April 9 Head Start Easter Project on April 14 JM/FBLA March for Babies Walk on May 7 Congratulations to Francesca LeBlond, Advanced Placement Art Student, for having two artworks dis-played at the Teen Art show of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library during the month of March. Many of the region’s high schools were represented with over sixty works on display. Congratulations to Simon Hu for being chosen to represent James Monroe High School and Fredericks-burg City Schools in the Virginia School Board Association art show and contest during the month of April. Simon submitted a watercolor of an abstracted tree and its roots. The contest will be judged on April 3. Good luck Simon! Congratulations to the Key Club for their outstanding competitive representation of James Monroe High School at the Capital District’s convention in March. MID-TERM EXAMS and NINE WEEKS BENCHMARK TESTS Mid-Term exams are given in courses taught on the 4X4 schedule and will be administered on April 4-7. The ex-ams are designed to cover the content objectives and skills of the entire semester and count 20% of the semes-ter grade.

Nine Weeks Benchmark Tests are given in courses taught on the A-B schedule and will be administered on April 4-7. The tests are designed to cover the content objectives and skills of the entire nine week grading period. Students who are absent from an examination period will not be allowed to make up the exam/test unless they pre-sent a doctor’s excuse, court order, or have prior approval from Mr. Gordon.
