Dear Parent(s):

I hope this final newsletter of the school year finds each family, and all of our students, ready for a relaxing and enjoyable summer. I hope that the summer of 2018 will have experiences that will create many life-long memories to cherish. The students this year have worked incredibly hard and very much deserve this break to revitalize themselves for a new year of learning in late August. I want to wish our eighth grade students leaving for high school the very best in the fu-ture. We will truly miss them at Roosevelt. I know I’ll be watching all of them walk across a stage in a few years accepting their diploma! They are a great group of learners that we are sending on to the next level.

As we close this school year and look toward the 2018-19 school year, I want to share a big change that will be happening for us at school and for parents/guardians next year. Beginning in July, the district will transition to using a new student information system called Infinite Campus. This new system will replace PowerSchool. The district began the process of transitioning this spring so that Infinite Campus can be ready to go for the new school year. Why the change to Infinite Campus? This decision to change came as a result of over two years of research and feed-back. Over that time period, it became evident that PowerSchool was not keep-ing pace with the needs of the district and what we wanted it to be able to do to benefit our students. Through an in-depth look at Infinite Campus (which cur-rently serves more students in the state of Iowa than PowerSchool), and seeing Infinite Campus in action, it became clear that this system can help better inform our parents/guardians, and address some of the shortcomings of PowerSchool that we noticed at the district level.

What will be different? The most notable difference will be the look and operation of the system. It will be different from what you are used to using with PowerSchool. Yes, the grade book will look different also. For the district, the most important and beneficial changes come with the structure and functionality of the system. Here are a few examples of how it will be different:

• District staff will now be able to capture data from any point in time, allow-ing us to look at historical data or a past snapshot in time for a student. This will be beneficial in our timely communication with families.

• Increased flexibility with assessment reporting, including the ability to han-dle standards-aligned grading, in providing grading information to students, parents, and guardians.

• An easier to use online registration system that is more robust for parents and guardians.

• A system that will be hosted by the district, with all updates and mainte-nance handled by Infinite Campus—giving us full flexibility in how the system is customized to meet our needs, and more importantly, the needs of our families.

What do you need to do?In mid-May the district sent a brief email to all parents regarding the change to Infinite Campus and the process needed to accurately move current data into the new system. This is a very important step in the process. In a couple weeks each student’s primary contact on PowerSchool will receive information from the district about how to login to Infinite Campus, and then confirm or update the basic information that is on file. The purpose is to ensure that we have accurate student information to rollover into Infinite Campus. Your completion of this step is very much appreciated!

While there is no student information system that is perfect, from our research, we believe that Infinite Campus is better suited to serve students, parents/guard-ians, and the district. Thank you in advance for your support as we move to this new student information system. I’m confident that as we make the move, you will find Infinite Campus to bring welcomed changes to the way we share infor-mation with you. Please give us a call when you have questions!

Have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

Jeffrey J. Johll, Principal

2017-2018 ERMS PTO

Dear Parents,

Every year you as a family have the opportuntiy to pay the PTO fee of $10 when register-ing your child, when paying for meals, or simply by dropping it off in the office.

These fees are used to pay for field trips, various needs the kids may have in their class-rooms, or something that the teachers may need, which will benefit the kids.

Some of the things the money has paid for include tall tables, exercise balls for the kids to sit on, teaching aids, and field trips. Our bigger budget things come from our once a year fundraiser. This past year we bought 4 monitors/TV screens that inform the kids of what is going on and have photos from sports events and other activities the kids take part in. We also allocated money to the new screen and laser projector in our beautiful auditorium.

Please consider paying the dues the next time you are on-line or in the ERMS office.

Thank you for your support!

House 6-2’s May Raptor Rave is Rachel Mc-Donough. From the beginning of the school year, Rachel has been an example of what a stu-dent does to follow and live the 3R’s every day at ERMS. She is ready for her classes and brings necessary supplies. She shows respect to adults, as well as her peers. Having assignments done on time, and doing quality work to the best of her ability, are just a few ways Rachel demonstrates responsibility. We consistently observe Rachel showing a willingness to help in any way she can to make things better for her peers and adults. Way to go, Rachel! Congratulations!

Natalie Weber is House 6-1’s May Raptor Rave. Natalie is a prime example of Roosevelt’s 3 R’s. Natalie is respectful and kind to her classmates and teachers. Natalie is responsible, always on task and a studious, determined student. She sets an incredible example to her peers and dem-onstrates what being ready to learn looks like. ERMS 7th Graders Named State Winners in the 16th Annual

eCYBERMISSION STEM Competition

The U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) today an-nounced 7th grade team The Fitness Friends—consisting of Isabella Da-vid, Grace Kolker, and Amelia Dungan—as 2nd place state winner for Iowa in the 16th annual eCYBERMISSION competition. eCYBERMIS-SION is one of several science, technology, engineering and mathemat-ics (STEM) initiatives sponsored by the U.S. Army Educational Out-reach Program (AEOP). Students are challenged to work in teams of 3-4 to identify a problem in their community and use scientific practices or the engineering design process to develop a solution. Student prizes for each grade level are awarded at the state, regional, and national levels.

The Fitness Friends worked together with 7th grade teacher Julie Bahl, Team Advisor, to look at other ways to lose weight besides exercising. The teams submitted their Mission Folder—the official write-up of the project— through the eCYBERMISSION website to be evaluated and scored by volunteer virtual judges. Second-place state winning teams received $500 per student team member in U.S. EE Savings Bonds.

ERMS Band News

What a great year for the ERMS Band Program! The 6th grade band has grown by leaps and bounds, the 7th/8th Grade Band has continued the NINE YEAR streak of getting a Superior + at contest, and the jazz band will again be opening for the Salsa Band on June 15 under the town clock!

Incoming 7th grade band students—Remember that the marching band IS THE SAME BAND as the concert band! All 2018-2019 7th and 8th graders are expected to participate in the marching band camp. This camp will run August 6 through 10 and Aug. 13, 14 and 17. The 6th and 7th will be reserved for the flag squad and the percussion line. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING A MEMBER OF THE FLAG SQUAD, COME AND TRY IT OUT! All wind players will report on 8th for the first time.

Incoming 6th graders may march in the fall parade if they successfully complete the band camp. It will likely be a stretch for them but every year I have a few 6th graders march! June 15—4:00 to 4:30—the ERMS Jazz Band will be performing un-der the Town Clock! Come on out for their music set and then stay for the Salsa Band!
