Term 1 Week 10 16thNovember, 2018

British International School of Cracow ul. Smoleńsk 25, 31-108 Kraków, Poland

Dear All On Tuesday 13th of November we had journalist from Major Polish Broadcast station TVN. They made a programme about the best private schools in Poland. A few schools from Gdansk, Warsaw and Krakow have also been selected and I am extremely happy that BISC Krakow is one of them. Our visitors popped into the Foundation, Early Primary, the science laboratory and computer classrooms. They also enjoyed watching a Visual Art lesson in our Secondary Art studio. The program will be shown in November ‘s “Dzień Dobry TVN “programme. The exact date and time will be announced later. I would like to thank all the students for their extreme good behaviour and being good representatives for BISC.

I would like to congratulate the student council and BISC Amnesty International group for running two spectacular events on Wednesday 14th during the evening. The Pyjama night, Movie and Quiz night for Primary and Secondary students. You can find photo coverage of both activities in this newsletter

On Thursday 15th of November I had a pleasure of receiving the official signed agreement between BISC Krakow and the Pedagocical University, which confirms our status of being The Exercise School (in Polish: Szkoła Ćwiczeń) of the Pedagogical University. The official ceremony took place at the University Campus at Jeczmienna 9 . Our school received a massive metal plaque, which could be permanently fixed to the building, confirming the scientific

patronage of the Pedagogical University.

On Thursday afternoon, we hosted a pro-photographer from Google Street view. He took some panoramic shoots inside the building in order to create a three dimensional Virtual Tour around our school. The process will be completed in November after which our school will have a professional ‘visiting card” embedded in the website and accessible through Google Maps enabling anybody to have a virtual walk around our school premises – an absolute must in 21st century.

Friday was entirely dedicated to the art of reading and books. My warmest thanks goes to brave PTA Mums who organized a great book sale. They dedicated the whole day in selling the books at very competitive prices. All the money collected will be used by PTA to sponsor some school events.

Although there is still one month to go, I would like you to put 12th of December, 2018 into your calendar. BISC Teachers will be performing Aladdin, pantomime in Ludowy Theatre at 2pm and 6.30 pm. You are all cordially invited

I wish you a happy weekend ahead

Sincerely yours Dr Stanislaw kwiecinski

Fairy-Tales in Foundation

In Foundation this half term we are learning all about the wonderful stories we were brought up with. In FS1 they learned about Jack and the Beanstalk and in FS2 they did The 3 Little Pigs. After learning about the stories, the students act them out and you can find photos or videos on Tapestry or Schoology. We are also working on our Letters sounds with Jolly Phonics. Don’t forget to ask your children everyday about the letter sound they are learning and words associated with that letter sound. Here is the link for the songs for Jolly Phonics Group 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1he7WQ0N-_M

Reminders: Please do not send your children in boots or gloves if they cannot put them on themselves.

Activity of the week: Go onto Starfall.com and pick the letters we have taken to hear their sounds and words related to them. http://more2.starfall.com/n/level-k/index/load.htm

Writing a personal statement: what to include and what to avoid When applying to universities, students are often asked to write what UCAS calls a ‘personal state-ment’ - a statement that is meant to show why one’s application to a particular course is worthy of attention. It’s important to remember that this is not a CV or resume, which lists what one has achieved. Instead, the statement is ‘pointed’ or ‘directed’ to a specific course. In other words, it is more like a ‘letter of motivation’. Students often have difficulty with this, which is not surprising as it’s usually the first time they’ve been called to do this. To get one started, here are some starting questions: What qualities as found on the online course

description page have universities identified to succeed in the course?

What are your academic strengths - how do you know?

What skills (self-management; research; etc) have you developed during the IB programme that have made you a more successful stu-dent?

What relevant insights have you had (the ex-tended essay is great here) that you could share?

What relevant experiences (in CAS, for in-stance) have helped you built up an aware-ness of a discipline, including its challenges?

It often takes multiple drafts, which is why it’s good to start early (well ahead of the deadline). The rea-son why it does is that sections often have to be redrafted to make points relevant. Language also is key, and should be efficient and not long-winded. Make sure it’s checked for grammar and punctua-tion before uploading. Students are kindly asked to send me their first draft for feedback. Please note that BISC will be hosting a meeting with David Winstanley, Associate Director for Student Recruitment at Goldmiths (University of London), on Monday 26th November from 15:40-17:00. Da-vid is a charismatic speaker who has lots of experi-ence with personal statements. All are invited.
