Higher temperatures and drought have made headlines in the news recently, raising questions about the sustainability of water in Arizona. One method of ensuring adequate supplies of safe drinking water are available far into the future is the implementation of potable reuse. Unfortunately, most people have a negative reaction to the thought of drinking “reused water”and liken it to reclaimed water. However, when presented with the option to drink locally brewed sustainable beer, minds seem to change. One organization in Tucson is seeking to change opinions about the “yuck factor” through the alcoholic beverage.

On Wednesday, April 12th, several engineers from the Tucson area including members of ASCE Arizona gathered at the Fox Theatre in downtown Tucson for a networking event featuring the winners of the $250,000 New Arizona Prize: Water Innovation Challenge. The event provided an update on the Arizona Pure Water Brew Challenge, and a viewing of the 30 minute documentary “Groundwater: To enact a law for common good” by filmmaker Michael Schiffer and starring Kathy Ferris, who were also in attendance.

The goal of the Pima County Southwest Water Campus team is to help change public perception about recycled water and to present the public with a safe, quality product created from recycled water. The concept includes a competition of local Arizona breweries to create the best tasting, high quality craft beer brewed from reclaimed water. The public will be able to taste test samples of the beer and vote for their favorites by visiting the mobile beer truck, which will be featured at events around Arizona. The truck is fully fitted for an hands-on learning event that will offer a tour of its mobile treatment system.

To find out more or if you are interested to see when the truck is in your area visit Pima County.

University or Arizona News

Kevin E. Lansey, PhD, Professor and Arizona Department Head Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics

Greetings from Tucson. Last month, I introduced two of program improvements (construction engineering management and architectural engineering) that we are investing in to provide a broader range of opportunities for our students and better serve the civil engineering community in Arizona. Within the revised University of Arizona and College of Engineering budget model, our budget is now largely driven by departmental activities. Thus, we are actively developing initiatives to increase our revenue to allow us to enhance experiences for our students. However, before continuing that discussion, a few items are timely and need mentioning.

First, our alumni and friends of our alumni are reminded of our departmental awards. We are fast approaching the June 1 deadline for nominations for Distinguished and Young (under 40) Alumni awards. As we look to identify at prospective candidates, particularly for the Young Alumni award, we see that missed several very outstanding graduates including a VP for a major construction firm, the lead Operations Manager for a mid-sized oil company and the first female Civil Engineering faculty member in Korea. I encourage you to help us identify deserving individuals so we do not fail to recognize the many accomplishments of our alums. Nomination forms are at http://civil.arizona.edu/centennial-awards. We will host the award banquet and our 12th annual Homecoming barbeque on October 27 and 28th, respectively. Now is the time to recognize your colleagues.

Next, we are extremely proud of our student chapter and their performance at the Pacific Southwest Conference last month.  Sixty-four CE students attended and participated at the UC-Irvine event.  The group excelled in several of the engineering events by placing first in the Design Build Construction and Concrete Frisbee competitions, third in Transportation, fifth in the Geo-wall competition, sixth in Surveying, and seventh in the overall Steel Bridge competition. The chapter also excelled in the smaller events by placing third in Kan Jam, and sixth in both Timber Towers and Scavenger Hunt. The chapter made a dramatic improvement to finish in 6th place overall of 18 schools; only 5 points from a fourth-place finish.  The concrete canoe team also had a strong participation this year, the team made tremendous strides in organization and in their final product.  The chapter future is extremely bright as many of the participating students were juniors and they have elected another strong group of leaders for next academic year.  Kudos to the students and thank you to faculty and practitioner supporters and sponsors.

Returning to other departmental activities, this February the Department led a university-wide effort to host a conference on Science Diplomacy and Policy. Science diplomacy activities include:

Science in diplomacy: Informing policy objectives with scientific advice

Diplomacy for Science: Facilitating international science collaboration

Science for diplomacy: using scientific collaboration to improve international relations between countries

To those goals, in collaboration with the National Academies and the AAAS, over 25 experts in this field came to Tucson to provide a “state of the art” in science diplomacy and science policy and discuss a vision for its future. This meeting was held February 22-24, 2017 in Tucson near the University of Arizona campus.  The meeting opened on the evening of February 22 with a broad discussion of general public interest on the role of various entities in and opportunities for science diplomacy… Continued on Next Page

Continued from Previous Page …featuring Dr. Peter Agre, Nobel Laureate and Ambassador Thomas Pickering, former US ambassador to the UN, and Norman Neureiter, one of three current and former science advisors to the US Secretary of State in attendance.

E. William Colglazier, the previous science advisor, was instrumental in organizing the first full meeting day that focused on the general field and included Vaughan Turekian, current science advisor, as a keynote speaker. The second day of the meeting was centered on water and climate change in the Americas. Over 100 people attended on the full meeting days and 150 were on hand at the opening session. This meeting provided an opportunity for CE students to understanding the broader impacts and issues of our field. Several CE graduate students attended the full meeting and our junior level hydraulic engineering class was on hand Friday to learn about water issues across the Americas. More information on the meeting can be found at global.arizona.edu/science-diplomacy.

Again, the CEEM Department thanks all of our alumni, friends, and the CE and construction industries for their continued support. More next month on our activities. Bear Down.

Continued from Page 1 …13 Region Directors (our Region 8 Director is not elected for one more year), and two at large directors are appointed. This election is also when the governors are elected for our region, two of our seven governors will complete their term this year so two new ones will be elected during this election cycle. Just to be clear; our section elections will happen in June, so be on the lookout for those.

Last year’s society voting turnout was quite small which can be associated to several factors including difficulty to vote, people not knowing the vote was open, lack of candidate information, and indifference. The society went to great lengths this time around to make voting easier to access and complete which is discussed in further detail below. The candidate information has also been clarified and increased this time around. Visions and candidate ideas can be found for each candidate at http://www.asce.org/Elections/.

As for indifference, I can only explain to you why I find it important to vote. ASCE is made up more than 150,000 members working to increase the safety and welfare for civilization, and also to be leaders all around the globe. We find ourselves in a rapidly changing profession due to technology, population increase, and politics to name a few. As things change, so do our exceptions and needs from those making the decisions for our civil engineering society. The elected board of directors is responsible for conveying a strong public image, directing outreach, and executing the society agenda. By casting your vote for your chosen candidate, you are influencing the direction the organization takes in several areas and ensuring that the focus of the society continues to look to the expectations of the ASCE membership.

Like I said before, the society has taken great strides in making the voting process easier. This time around it should be pretty straight forward:

Members (student and affiliate members are not eligible to vote) will receive emails with a link and directions on Monday, May 1st. Check your spam folder if you did not receive it, even if you didn't receive the email don't worry because there are NO special codes this year.

Either way you can simply go to http://www.asce.org/votenow and use your ASCE member login and password (click the links if you need assistance) to vote and submit your ballot.

Members who prefer to vote using a paper ballot may send an email to Patti Jones as and request that one be mailed.

We may have different reasons for being a member of this organization, but when all is said and done we are responsible for the safety and welfare of the public. We are the strongest, most valuable advocates for responsible infrastructure decisions, basic sanitation, transportation safety, and stability of our structures. While we may not be making the decisions in the halls of government, voting for effective ASCE leaders may be the next best thing. We need leaders who will advocate for us and the progressive advancement of our technical profession. I encourage you to take some time out of your May to ensure you get the chance to be involved in this advancement, I know I will.
