Hundreds of parents and carers flocked to this year’s Including Parents conference at Bestwood Lodge last month. The popular yearly event is organised by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Schools and Families Specialist Services team and features a range of workshops and speakers relevant to parents and carers of children and young people with additional needs.

This year guests were treated to a rousing performance by the Pulp Friction choir as well as workshops on important topics such as growing and changing, adjusting to change and understanding physical intervention in schools.

If you live in the county but missed your chance this year keep your eyes out for the March edition of the IRIS magazine where we will post details of the 2018 event.

What did you think? Some comments from attendees:

“I really enjoyed the topics and the fact that things were led by parents in a similar situation”

“It’s a lovely setting with interesting workshops and there’s a feeling of unity with others”.

“Pulp Friction are an inspiration”

“It was a very emotional day for me and very informative”.

One dedicated IRIS reader has worn the same t-shirt every day for a whole year in order to raise awareness of her daughter’s condition. Victoria Feddersen’s five year-old daughter Emily is one of just over 1,500 people worldwide diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

The condition has a number of health implications for Emily including autistic tendencies, developmental delay, seizures and low muscle tone but, most profoundly for Victoria, it also means Emily is non-verbal.

She said: “Emily doesn’t have a voice so I felt it was my duty to be a voice for her and for others that have this rare syndrome”.

It’s fair to say she’s succeeded as since she first made the decision to put on the t-shirt last March she’s amassed more than 1200 followers on Facebook logging on to see her daily posts.

Indeed Victoria may have started the campaign to raise awareness but it’s also proved lucrative – raising an amazing £4,500 for the charity Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation UK.

When IRIS raised the delicate topic of hygiene Victoria laughed and admitted that the poor garment was washed in the evenings, but that there were no stand-ins used for the duration.

She added: “The t-shirt itself is still doing ok. It’s stretched, faded and the lettering is cracked but it doesn’t look

too bad considering how much it’s been worn!”.

Editor’s CommentsSo I’m going to admit something here… I made a mistake.

Not a big one, but a mistake nonetheless.

When interviewing the Complete Puzzle group I asked the organisers everything – about their lives and histories and about how they came together – but I forgot to ask them where their unusual name comes from.

After a few furtive phone calls I’m ashamed to say I still don’t know the answer but oddly I think I might know the solution to the puzzle they mention.

I first began to unpick the puzzle when I met with the Young Pioneers

group on a cold February morning armed with just a notepad and a box of biscuits.

I was there to gather their opinions on how the magazine could be improved for our younger readers and they didn’t disappoint.

In this edition you’ll find many traces of their handiwork - whether that’s directly (Kirsty’s review of a recent Preparing for Adulthood event), creatively (Matt’s beautiful nature photography on the cover) or editorially (the article regarding Future in Mind on page 16, which addresses the young people’s desire to see more stories dealing with mental health in the magazine).

Working in this collaborative fashion was enlightening and valuable, but in doing so IRIS is by no means alone.

On page 11 you can read about the County Council’s commitment to co-producing its Short Breaks strategy

while page 10 shows Nottinghamshire Parent Carer’s Forum’s commitment to independence and ensuring it only answers to one group – you.

In fact this magazine is full to the brim with examples of people working together in order to improve our community, our services and, ultimately, our lives.

Which brings me back to Complete Puzzle.

Alone no one member of the Complete Puzzle group can figure out what’s best for their children and they’re by no means alone - It’s a complete puzzle because alone we’re all incomplete.

But, more importantly, together we’re not.

Here’s to a sunny summer filled with friends and conversation – take care of each other.

The Writing’s On The Wall For Children And Young People’s Emotional And Mental Health Services… And That’s A Really Good ThingYoung people asked for ideas to improve children’s emotional and mental health services in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire created graffiti inspired artworks at a prestigious Nottingham gallery expressing their unique viewpoints during a recent engagement event. The 14 young people at the Future in Mind planning event at Nottingham Contemporary on May 13th were drawn from across Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Nottingham City and County Youth Cabinets, Base51 and Trans4me and were there to help shape the Future in Mind Plan, explain what is important to them individually and discuss what they believe are priority areas for services.

The day long event aimed to develop “I Statements” which identified what mattered most to them and included:

l I want to tell my story once and to one professional

l I want to be worked with as an individual based on my individual and unique needs

l I want a consistent worker who has time for me, who gets to know me and gets to understand the real me and my story.

l I want a 24/7 Crisis helpline.

l I want staff to have more training on the LGBT+ community, especially Trans and non-binary people.

The young people then worked with a graffiti artist from Nugent Education to transform their statements into fantastic pieces of graffiti art reflecting their own viewpoint.

In the afternoon the group discussed the top 5 priorities which they’d like to work jointly on, eventually agreeing on:

l More support in Schools/Collegesl Fighting Stigma campaigns l 24/7 Crisis helplinel Telling their story once to one professionall Involve vulnerable groups such as refugees, Trans and non-binary groups and other underrepresented young people

The young people will now meet to continue work on their priorities and receive information and updates both electronically and face to face.

Future in Mind is a national document which aims to improve emotional and mental health services for children and young people.

The event at the Nottingham Contemporary was arranged by Commissioners from Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Keeley, 18 — I’ve never done graffiti myself… I’ve done art courses but I’ve never done this exactly before. It’s been interesting and it’s been nice that we’ve been able to make a statement and put our own ideas forward… The idea of bringing them together is really good.

Darren, 17 — I do art at college. My piece focuses on the word “one” and reflects that every time you get a new professional you have to re-tell your story - one professional equals one story. It’s about the repetitiveness of the whole thing - It’s just the same thing over and over again.

Devante, 17 — It’s been pretty different today as this isn’t something I’d really do. I’m more into sports… but I’ve really enjoyed this today!

Articulate Artists – What did the young people think?

The Cerebral Palsy Sport National Athletics Championships 2017 will take place at Harvey Hadden Sports Village on Saturday 23rd September. With categories for all ages 11 and over and a range of classifications the event is a great way for sports enthusiasts to compete at a national level and test their abilities… and if

that sounds like too much hard work then spectators are always welcome too!

The competition costs £20 for juniors and £25 for seniors although reductions can be offered to those taking up CP sport annual membership.

In addition, if you’re interested in finding out more about Cerebral Palsy and Sport then the charity CP Sport is also running an awareness

workshop in September designed to help people understand what Cerebral Palsy is, what the issues, barriers and benefits are for people accessing sport and the different ways of supporting and promoting sport for people with Cerebral Palsy.

For more information about both the championships and the workshop, and to book your place, visit www.cpsport.org/events.

The aptly named Complete Puzzle group was formed by parents Rebecca, Kirsty, Esther, Tracey, Claire and Trev following the closure of Indigo Kids last year.

Rebecca said “I think it’s important to have somewhere to go and feel that you can be yourself without being judged by other parents and children who might not understand and at Indigo Kids I made friends for life - and people to share that life with.

“That’s where I learned what I know now and I want to keep that going for other parents”.

The stay and play sessions take place every week on Tuesdays at 5-7pm in the spacious Bestwood Village Community Centre and are for children with any form of special educational need.

The huge building (graciously provided by the Bestwood Village Vision Group) boasts a sensory room and a huge

playing field suitable for even the most energetic 4-12 year olds!

However although this is a group aimed at the young people themselves it’s also a great chance for parents to get together and share stories and tips.

The group costs £2 to attend (refreshments provided).

Hundreds hit hoops, belted balls and smashed skittles at a recent Special Olympics event in Ashfield. Disabled young people from schools across the district came together for a dynamic programme at Lammas Leisure Centre featuring wheelchair

basketball, football, boccia, athletics and healthy eating on 24th May.

Star struck youngsters also got the chance to meet Paralympic swimming star Ollie Hynd as well as viewing a figure skating performance by Special Olympics GB athletes Meg Mcfarlane and Callum Mills in the afternoon.

As a follow on to the event participants are being encouraged to get involved in new weekly family boccia and Special Olympics multi sports sessions at Lammas Leisure Centre.

For further details about these new sessions contact Lammas Leisure Centre on 01623 511177.

Ashfield Gets Active!

On Saturday 6th May IRIS was one of many professionals asked to host a stall at the Preparing for Adulthood event at Harvey Hadden Stadium.

The large event was for young people aged 14 and over in the county with Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCP) and aimed to provide a taste of what is available as they transition to adult services – including employment, further education and apprenticeships.

It was fantastically well attended and seemed popular with the young people… so much so that we decided to ask an expert – 22 year-old Kirsty – to give us her review of what she thought:

When my parents and I arrived we signed in and were given a free meal voucher to use in the cafe.

There were lots of tables around half of the hall with lots of excellent information on them; I learnt what

there is available for my age group and also what I could do to prepare for work when I leave college.

Everyone was very friendly and although I had my parents with me they spoke to me about what I would like.

I found out about short breaks, day centres, adventure services, support that is available for me when I start work and other services which are there for young people of my age.

There were a lot of people there and on the other half of the hall were arts and crafts and fitness dance to music.

It was a very interesting event and I found out about a lot of new things, and I would like to go again if it happens in future.

A popular café which supports young people with learning disabilities to gain training and real-world experience has been honoured with an award by the Houses of Parliament.Rumbletums hosted a special ceremony for volunteers, staff, parents and carers to mark the occasion recently at its premises in Kimberley.

On hand to present the award was MP and long-term customer Anna Soubry, who also made the nomination for the MPs special award for Inspirational Community Group late last year.

The MP for Broxtowe says she’s in no doubt as to why the café deserves the award.

She said: “The coffee here is absolutely outstanding and the breakfasts are so good!

“It’s a great café but it also manages to be a remarkable place because of the training and the opportunities it provides for these young people and that makes it even more special”.

The amazing breakfasts were something of a theme at the event – as Chair of Trustees Derek Gardiner

revealed while speaking about what brought him to the charity nearly two years ago.

He said: “I fell in love with the place as my son lived in Kimberley and used to keep raving about the breakfasts on a Sunday morning.

“It’s something to do with the look on the young people’s face as they’re serving you - they’re just so enthusiastic… and our customers feel the same!”

The former baker and part time trainer at the cafe says the charity didn’t even know they’d been nominated for the award until they were told they had won – but that doesn’t make it any less precious.

He added: “We’re thrilled to have the award as it reflects all the hard work of our volunteers, staff and trainers”.

For more information about the café and its trainee and volunteer programs visit www.rumbletums.org.uk or telephone 0115 938 4953

A Parent’s View:“I think what makes Rumbletums unique is the support that is given to the trainees, who are expected to complete tasks within the cafe but who are fully supported to enable them to achieve. Allowances are made for the fact that the trainees may have difficulties but excuses are not accepted and so each trainee gains in confidence and self esteem.

“I don’t know where else people with learning difficulties would get this level of support, which allows them to feel they are doing something worthwhile”.

Congratulations to the staff from Pinders opticians in Mansfield who braved an inflatable obstacle course to raise money for charity A Place To Call Our Own.The six sporty staff members from the branch in Queen Street began training months in advance for the 5K inflatable run at Nottingham Racecourse on June 24th and (ahem) refused to be deflated by the 10 gigantic obstacles present on the track.

As we went to press we couldn’t confirm whether they’d hit their £200 fundraising target, but if you’d like to chip in at the last minute you can visit www.localgiving.org/fundraising/pinders5kmrun

It’s launch time for a new creative shop showcasing the work of a Social Enterprise promoting opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.Spacecraft is based on Hucknall Road, Nottingham and features creative products and services fashioned by clients at nearby Space Inclusive, in Pelham Road and also at its sites in Mansfield. IRIS caught up with Lee and Support Worker Stella (pictured) just after the new shop opened in late May. Stella says that the shop has a dual purpose – allowing clients to gain work

experience in a customer facing role in a real retail environment while also promoting and nurturing the creative talents of those using the service who create the products for sale.

Apparently Lee, 25 (pictured right), used to be quite nervous when speaking to people – which is definitely not the case now!

He said: “I’ve been doing pretty good so far - I worked the opening day and I sat chatting to the general public as, for me, it’s not about the money – It’s about the customers”.

“I enjoy making sure they’re happy!”

In addition the shop also has a bike club which restores old bikes for sale or services customers’ existing bikes.

The shop is open Monday to Friday (excluding Thursday).

For more information about Space Inclusive visit its website at www.spaceinclusive.co.uk or telephone 0115 837 0693.

Arty Type? Read On: Spacecraft is looking for established artists and those with a creative skill to host workshops for its clients. If you think that might be you then why not get in touch?

Young Carers Transition Project To ContinueThe Carers Federation’s Young Carers Transition Project has been refunded by Children in Need for the next three years. It supports Young Carers aged 14-19 years old in Nottingham City, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe to build confidence and self-esteem, look at their future, explore opportunities and increase their aspirations.

If you would like to find out more about the project information contact Naomi Sykes on 0115 962 9335 or email [email protected]

The former Nottinghamshire Participation Hub has rebranded itself to celebrate achieving complete independence. When the hub was established over 4 years ago it was hosted by the local charity A Place To Call Our Own (APTCOO) and alongside its grant from the national information charity Contact a Family it received additional funding from Nottinghamshire County Council in order to get off the ground.

However, the group works to provide constructive feedback, influence decision making and shape current and future services and feels it is now able to confidently represent the community’s wishes free of any potential conflicts of interest.

So with just its funding from Contact a Family the hub has now named itself Nottinghamshire Parent Carer Forum (Notts PCF) and developed a new logo to reflect its new found independence.

Notts PCF Chair Georgina Palmer said: “This last year has been a very exciting one for the forum as we became a completely independent organisation run by parent-carers for parent-carers.

“We are passionate in our goal to make sure that the voices of parents with children and young people with SEND and disabilities are heard”.

The Forum’s aim is to make sure that the planned and existing services meet the needs of parent carers and their children rather than wasting resources on things that are not useful or beneficial.

Notts PCF will hold its first conference on Friday 7th July in Newark at the Salvation Army Church Centre, NG24 3GA. It will be called “Speak Up and Speak Out - Top tips on feeling confident at meetings and working with professionals”.

To book and for more details about the forum visit the website at www.nphub.co.uk

Nottinghamshire County Council is asking children and young people with disabilities and their parents and carers to help with a review of its short breaks offer.Over the next nine months the aim is for the Council to co-produce a revised version of the offer alongside partner Nottinghamshire Parent Carer Forum (NPCF).

To assist with this review the Council is employing a Co-Production Officer to find out your views and support the work to

ensure you have someone you can contact directly about it.

The project will also involve developing a Charter for Co-production, which will set out the principles regarding how the Council and its partners will work with children and young people with disabilities and their parents and carers in the future.

These changes are possible because of funding provided to the Council and NPCF by the national Department for Communities and Local Government and the new offer should go live in April next year.

Further details about how you could become involved in the co-production of the Short Break’s offer will be available soon through both IRIS and the Local Offer (www.nottinghamshire.sendlocaloffer.org.uk).

What are Short Breaks?Short Breaks provide opportunities for disabled children and young people to spend time away from their primary carers and take part in activities as well as providing time for parents and carers to rest or to do other activities they value.

County Commits To Collaboration For Short Breaks Offer

Get Into the GroveA long established Nottinghamshire respite centre is building something special in its community gardens – and needs help from creative (or messy!) IRIS readers. The Big House in Edwinstowe is currently crafting a sensory garden in its grounds and needs donations of items that might help… and it’s a long list!

When IRIS spoke with Assistant Care Manager Phil Rutherford last month he said that although they would like flowers, plants, paving stones, pots, planters, stone and topsoil the service would also welcome things they could upcycle like musical instruments, colanders, pots, pans and wellington boots!

There’s method to the madness as the garden will be split into distinct areas offering different sensory experiences such as a herb garden and a musical area that can use the different items creatively.

Although the young people at the Big House have had significant input into the gardens the centre also offers the use of its garden facilities free of charge to all children and young people with a disability and their

families in Nottinghamshire.

Phil said: “Our vision is that it’s going to be a place where our young people and young people in general can relax and have a good sensory experience and a good time – we’re open to trying anything so please use your imagination!

“It’s a lovely secluded area and already we’ve had our young people come in and use it because it just naturally leads into this relaxing little grove”.

So dig out your most exciting items and IRIS will feature the more outlandish features of the garden in a photo spread in a future edition!

A Sweet shop and café providing training for adults with a learning disability has taken its work out from behind the counter and into the community. Sam’s workplace was first set up in 2014 by Debbie Colledge and her friend Vicky Williams to create the place Debbie hoped would exist for her son Sam after he left school. At first this took the form of a café and sweet shop based in Preston Road, Rainworth, but as this became established the pair began to listen to the 24 young people using their service and branched out into a range of exciting new avenues to meet their needs. For instance one of the most recent developments is the upstairs flat at the café which they’ve turned into… an upstairs flat!

Joking aside the area allows young people to develop independent living skills such as how to change beds and use the washing machine as well as learn skills such as ironing, budgeting and housework. Debbie said: “The biggest hurdle is the idea that “my mum does that at home” and it’s interesting when you take photos and send them to the parents… often they say “right… you’re doing that yourself now!””“it’s a learning curve for parents too - I’m protective of my son when he’s at home so Vicky works with him here”.Sadly for Debbie Vicky’s role as the designated domestic goddess means she gets some of the less glamorous avenues the project has developed – such as accompanying youngsters for animal care sessions at the nearby Riding for the Disabled stables. She added: “Vicky helps them cook meals and I get to deal with the smelly horse poo…. I know my place!”

And as if animal husbandry and independent living weren’t enough the project has also branched out into arts and crafts, which are produced on site and sold in the shop, as well as horticulture at a dedicated allotment in Blidworth furnished with gardening equipment purchased with a Community Fund Grant from Nottinghamshire County Council. Both Vicky and Debbie say that developing the service has been harder than either of them initially thought when they set the project up but feel that building around their users’ desires has its own rewards.Vicky added: “It’s more of a challenge but no two days are the same. “We get to find their skill and hone in on it… and if they want to do something we won’t hold them back”.To find out more about Sam’s Workplace telephone 01623 797240, email [email protected] or find them on Facebook.

Don’t worry… despite the title the fantastic project providing work training to young people with disabilities is still at large! In fact its opened a café at its most prestigious location yet. Pulp Friction formally took over the running of the café at the Justice Museum in Nottingham’s town centre in January following

a successful tenure running the kitchen at the Fire Station headquarters in Bestwood last year.Irene Procter is one of the volunteers working with Pulp Friction members at the café and says the location has caused the organisation to up their game. She said: “It’s quite a swanky café and I think that allows us to turn it up a notch as the members working here have already had quite

extensive training… so we’re like a finishing school in some respects. “We’re currently focusing on things like putting love hearts on the coffee and great customer service… we want to promote high standards in the café”.In addition to the café and kitchen the social enterprise also runs a variety of projects for young people, including a smoothie bike which is hired out to events (and also holds responsibility for its unusual name!) and a community choir. For more information about Pulp Friction telephone 07794 676398 or visit www.pulpfrictionsmoothies.org.uk

What do Pulp Friction’s members think about working in the café?

Pulp Friction… Brought To Justice!

Claire Crawford, 28 — “I just like coming and working here… I like working in town as it’s easier to get to for me and I don’t have to rush around”.

Joey, 23 — I’m really enjoying it. It’s been very busy and Friday lunchtime times have been REALLY busy, but everyone’s been friendly and polite.

Pelicans, ANTS and ParentsBilborough parents and carers with their antennas out for support in the area may be interested in a new group of like minded parents. The ANTS (Available Nurturing Team Support) group meets every Wednesday at the Pelican Public House in Bracebridge Drive, Bilborough at 10am.

Members told IRIS over a cup of tea that they see it as an informal get together and chance to discuss problems.

The group is open to anyone caring for a child with additional needs.

If you’d like to find out more the group can be found by searching for “NG8 families with disabled children” on Facebook.

It was an experimental time for young people attending the Nottinghamshire Play for Disabled Children team holiday clubs over the Easter HolidaysYoungsters spent the time weighing, measuring, mixing and exploring with different mediums to make exploding volcanos!

It was messy fun all round as the young people aged 5-18 also made rainbow tubes and flubber… along with the more traditional “experiment” of baking fairy cakes.

If you live in the county and think a child you care for would benefit from attending the service then contact your social worker in the Children’s Disability Team.

A new service aims to support families in Mansfield both before and after a diagnosis of Autism or ADHD. Small Steps works with families of children aged 0 to 19 based in Mansfield and provides a dedicated transition worker or volunteer befriender who will work with

families in their own home. This worker provides support with accessing local services, education and financial support as well as reducing social isolation and improving confidence.

For Project Coordinator Katy Robinson (left) it’s not just about small steps, but the right ones.

“I’m passionate about families and helping them put the right steps in

place to get them on the right path and get the best outcomes for them.

“The diagnosis isn’t the end of the world – even though it might sometimes feel like it for some families”

The service accepts referrals direct from families for both its pre and post diagnosis support so if you feel it could help contact 01623 672152 or email [email protected]

Parents, pupils and staff at Fountaindale school may not want to see Principal Mark Dengal go after an amazing 26 years – but few could argue he’s chosen a great time to do it! After all the Mansfield Special school has just received an outstanding award from Ofsted for both its school and residential provision and with (hopefully) sunny sports days and leaver’s prom days taking place in July he should get the chance to party with pupils and say goodbye.

Mark says that he purposefully timed his departure to ensure the Ofsted inspections were taken care of for his successor and to give time to recruit a top quality replacement. He feels that the school is in a strong position for the future.

He said: “It’s a fantastic job and one I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. It’s difficult to put your finger on any one thing I’ve loved the most but I feel lucky to have had a job that I’ve loved so much.

“There’s never been a day when I’ve got out of bed thinking “oh no, I’ve got to go to work” and I’ve been lucky to do something that I enjoy, which is why it’s been so hard to make the decision to move on”.For more information about Fountaindale School visit www.fountaindale.notts.sch.uk/

Can You Help?Fountaindale is asking the community to vote online to help it receive a £25,000 community award.

It has been selected for a grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation for the Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations, but the public vote will dictate how much each of the 300 nominated charities receives.

To vote visit the MCF website mcf.org.uk/vote, select the Nottinghamshire page and vote for Fountaindale. The voting period is from Monday 12 June until Monday 31 July.

Principal Bids A Fond Farewell To “Outstanding” School

Guest speaker Zaff Simone (pictured) gave an entertaining, enlightening talk about his experience as an adult with autism at a conference held by Newark and Sherwood Autism Support Group at the Salvation Army, Balderton, Newark, last month. Zaffy and fellow speaker Dr Wenn Lawson wowed the crowd with a show based around the theme of acceptance featuring endearing stories of their lives, their research and the lessons they had learned that might be applicable for others.

Wenn is world renowned for his research into autism but on this occasion he was instead promoting his new novel “Transitioning Together” – A personal story co-written with his wife Beatrice focusing on Wenn’s transition from female to male twenty-two years into their relationship.

Beat The Boredom With Boot CampWhen you’re a teenager or a young adult the summer can seem to take forever – particularly if you’re not in work or education. But thankfully Inspire’s Skills for Employment team are here to beat the boredom!

It’s running a two week programme – called “boot camp” - of free fun activities for young people aged 16 to 24 designed to support, challenge and inspire them in preparation for their next step into further training, education and employment.

Those That Can… Should! It’s rare that someone sums up everything we want to say in an IRIS story in one quote – but 15 year old Emma Louise came close this edition when we met with North Notts Makaton Choice last month.

She said: “Everyone should come…It’s all about signing and singing.

“If you can’t sign then sing… and if you can’t sing then just sign! It’s all about having fun.”

And that pretty much sums it up!

The group was meeting for its one year anniversary and everyone was in good cheer – belting out popular hits that included “You’ve got a friend in me” and “I’m a believer”.

The choir is open to people with and without additional needs and takes place on Tuesdays at 5-6pm (2-10 year olds) and 6-7pm (11 years upwards).

In between practices the choir often performs at schools, events

and Christmas markets but readers just wishing to practice with the tight knit, friendly group at its base in Goodwin Hall, Chancery Lane, Retford, are also welcome.

Attendee Irene Cairns said: I’ve got a 12 year old granddaughter and we came as soon as it started… she loves it!

“It’s the friendship. It’s like a family and we look after each other”.
