TRIBUNEH o l y T r i n i t y E p i s c o p a l C h u r c h

Every time Rev. Pam or I preach, we begin with this prayer:

Come Holy Spirit, come. Come as the Fire of Love and burn in our hearts. Come as the Wind and cleanse our souls. Help us see our need of you. Help us turn to you and make us whole (or holy). For our greater good and your greater glory, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.” -- The Easterday Prayer

When we open ourselves up to the Spirit of God we can become whole (or holy) in Jesus’ name. This idea goes back to the earliest traditions of the Christian church and to the teachings and actions of Jesus himself. In the early church, adults were prepared for baptism in the season of Lent and certain prayers were said over these “candidates” for baptism going through this period of preparation called the “catechumenate.” The liturgical renewal of the 1970’s recovered these ancient prayers. The one we based the “Easterday Prayer” on is in the Episcopal Book of Occasional Services and says this:

Come, O Holy Spirit, come; come as the wind and cleanse; come as the fire and burn; convict, convert, and consecrate the minds and hearts of these your servants, to their great good and to your great glory; who with the Father and the Son are one God, now and for ever. Amen. (from The Book of Occasional Services, 2nd ed. 1988)

The simple, but powerful idea is that when we are “touched by the Spirit of God” in the Name of Jesus, our minds and hearts, as well as our bodies, are consecrated, or made holy, or made whole. We learn this connection between Jesus and wholeness in the New Testament when Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, reads from the scroll of Isaiah (chapter 61) in Luke 4 and says, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,” to bring good news and freedom and healing. (See Luke 4:14-21) The Gospels are full of healings done by our Lord. We believe this healing power of Jesus comes to us today through prayer offered on our behalf in the Name of Jesus. This prayer from the Book of Common Prayer (p. 456) expresses this:

I lay my hands upon you in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, beseeching him to uphold you and fill you with his grace that you may know the healing power of his love. Amen.

The question for this healing weekend posed by The Rev. Dr. Sharon Lewis is this: “Will You Be Made Whole?” Here is Pastor Sharon’s invitation to you: “Just one touch of Jesus…just one glance of Jesus and we are changed. Healing is more than relief from pain; it is transformation of the whole person. Jesus said to the paralytic laying by the pool of Bethesda, “Will you be made whole?” and the man replied, “I have no one to put me in the pool.” (John 5:2-9). Many of us feel like that! There is no one to help; no one to hear. Lay there long enough and sometimes we feel like something is missing inside of us or “what’s wrong with me?” We yearn to be whole. Jesus has a solution and is the solution for He moves with such power and authority and has given us the same. “Go and do likewise!” he both invites and commands. Come and experience the healing touch of Jesus and have the opportunity to give it to others This workshop is for all people who want to experience healing and wholeness for themselves and pray for others healing if so led.”

You are invited. The question is for you. Will you be made whole?

Faithfully,

Fr. Steve Easterday

LIFTUP NEWS!By the time you read this we will have finally started our program. If you attend the WCFN or the Saturday evening services, you have met our five students. Please feel free to say hi and welcome them to our family. Their names are Javona, Iyanna, Dilma, Jeremy, and Lily. Each one of them has dreams for a brighter future.

Our next big fundraiser will be the Ravenwood Masquerade Murder mystery dinner on Saturday, September 29 at 6:30pm in the gym. The scene is set in the town of Bloodworth Falls which is plagued with scandals. The government there is corrupt and the town’s people bicker. The mayor is hosting a mysterious masquerade ball in the old Ravenwood Castle. You want to know why the mayor would do this in a town of doom and gloom. Everyone attending will be looking for that perfect mask. What will happen that night as everyone comes together?

There will be a buffet style dinner by Chef Daniel Farr. Our master of ceremony will be none other than Randy Jacobson leading us to the final “who done it” conclusion. Tickets for our fundraiser are $35, and will be available online soon. $2 beer and wine tickets will be available at the door. Once again, our church nursery will be available to watch our youngest parishioners.

A special thanks goes out to all our volunteers who are helping with our fundraising events, mentoring our students, the teachers, financial donors and our board members. Without you, none of this would be possible.

*** Does any one know where we might get a cello for free, or cheap for one of our students? If so please contact Deacon Stacey Westphal at [email protected].***

Coloring the Scriptures “Drawn In” to the Book of RuthCOLORING • CONVERSATION • CONTEMPLATION

Tuesdays starting September 4 at 11:00amJoin us beginning Tuesday September 4 for a NEW coloring study! Coloring will help us to quiet our hearts and minds to be “Drawn In” to the Book of Ruth. “Struck by tragedy

and on the fringes of society, Ruth didn’t wait for hope to arrive. She sought it out and grabbed hold of it. Compelled by need, animated by faith, she dared to leave the only land she knew.” In this coloring Bible study, we will explore Ruth’s resilience and resourcefulness. Reflection questions will help us understand both the text of the Bible and our own connection to Ruth’s story of trusting God and holding onto his irrevocable hope in the face of life’s struggles. All materials provided. Tuesdays at 11am at Holy Trinity Church Lewis Hall. Please sign up in the Narthex or by calling the church office so we can order enough books. 321-723-5272. Questions? Contact Rev. Meghan.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOLStarting on September 23, 10:30am

The Adult Sunday School Class is open to all and will begin on September 23 in the Parish Hall right after the 9AM worship service. Our purpose is to encourage a closer walk with Christ through the study of scripture. We are currently studying the Book of Matthew which, being the first book of the New Testament, provides a unique bridge between the old and new testaments. Jesus is introduced as the Messiah promised by the Old Testament prophets and explains how Jewish teaching is compatible with Jesus teachings. To date we have covered the book of Matthew through chapter 17. We have studied Jesus’ principles in the Sermon on the Mount, we have seen His power through miracles, His glory on the Mount of Transfiguration, and His creation of the Church, as well as His humanity. You don’t need to have attended the class previously to be able to jump right in and fully participate since each week is designed as a standalone study. Our first class on September 23 and will begin with a thorough review of our study thus far and will then continue through the remainder of the book. Please join us for this interesting study of our Lord Jesus and His teachings. Questions? Speak with Jack Bottomley at 321-622-5649.

November 16-18, 2018MEN! Mark your calendars now to attend the 2018 Men’s Retreat held on the grounds of Camp Wingmann Retreat and Conference Center in Avon Park, FL. It is open to all men (and friends) in the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. Registration will be open soon!

HEALTH MINISTRY NEWS! By, Nurse Carolyn WiltThe Health Ministry had three very different programs this summer. In June we had fun doing safety month with many products given away. In July, Dr. Jay Olsson spoke of different ways to deal with pain, including diet guidelines and relaxation protocol. In August, Kathryn Ridner from Vitas health care presented Let Your Voice Be Heard. It informed us of end of life decisions. What made this real to me was how we need to approach the financial, long term insurance, and where can I afford to live issues. Both of these presenters were outstanding in their knowledge of subject matter.

So what occurs the next months from the Health Ministry? First, we will continue to have monthly blood pressure screenings the first full weekend of each month. All fitness programs will continue as stated last month. We are not scheduling any Sunday forums during the next months because we have Adult Sunday Bible Study continuing in September. Jack Bottomley is doing a wonderful presentation of the gospel of Matthew filling our souls with wellness. I am encouraging our parishioners to take this time to become “healthy” in spirit.

As the nurse with some of our health team members, we’ll be doing more private visits to those not able to come to church, whether it is a short time illness (like a surgery) or long term illness. It has always been a passion for me to see those in our church community. Please assist us... if you’d like someone to come, please call the church office.

Remember: It’s time to get your flu vaccine (fall months). We will NOT be able to provide this service this year.

Revitalized 11:15 Worship Service

Prefer to sleep late on Sundays? Alarm clock didn’t wake you up on time? Don’t skip church! Come to the 11:15 service. Try out the new format. It is still a Rite 1 service, but everything is on the screens so you don’t have find the right page in the book. It is amazing the difference we are noticing. People are looking up instead of down and more people are singing along. But you are still welcome to use books if you prefer and the bulletin lists all the right page numbers. The service begins with an organ prelude followed by the announcements. Then we sing a well-known favorite hymn accompanied by the organ. The rest of the service uses more contemporary music with our new worship leader, Justin Clermont. Are you a musician? Justin would love to find a place for you in the new music team he will be forming. You can contact him directly at [email protected].
