Thank You Von Pickens At the P&C Meeting on Monday night, Von Pickens‟ incredible contributions to
our school community were celebrated. Von has been connected with our
school since her first child enrolled at Woodburn Central in 1990 and she has
held a range of positions on P&C. In recent years since her son left school, she
has continued to be an active P&C member through the Uniform Shop and
organising events such as the Mother‟s Day Stalls for K-6.

familiarise themselves with their new school.

Grip Leadership Conference Last Friday the Year 6 School
Captains: Tully Brednow, Noah
Boutle, Holly Richardson and
Riley Perkins went to the Grip
Leadership Conference in Tweed
Heads.
We had a lot of fun & we learnt a
lot about being better leaders in
our school. There were a lot of
fun activities that we enjoyed, but
we specifically enjoyed the „Loud noises‟ which was three short sessions filled
with really LOUD screaming. Another one of our favourites was the „Lead like a
strawberry, not like a watermelon‟ session, where we learnt that a watermelon
leader is a leader that is different on the inside to the outside, where as a
strawberry leader is the same both on the inside & outside.

facilitate a small group of 8-10 younger students, who work together through
a number of structured activities. Each teacher will supervise 3 groups in their
classroom. We are working on a module called Keeping Friends-helping us
explore the concept of friendship, build relationships and develop skills in
empathy and critical thinking. The module runs for 8 sessions. Our first
session enables the children to get to know everyone in their group, agreeing
how they will work together and interact cooperatively with others. They will
also begin to think about the meaning of friendship.
We encourage you to talk to your children about Peer Support every week as
it will help to reinforce the concepts learned in each session.
CHS Hockey– Chicks with Sticks On Monday the 19th May our open girls hockey team travelled to
Goonellabah to play against Kadina High School. Although the girls played
with great determination we went down 0-3 on the day.
Unfortunately the game was cut short when a brown snake decided to join in
the action. We had to wait 20 minutes for it to make it‟s way across the field. A
big thank you to Michael Lock for umpiring on the
day and also to the families who assisted with
transport. It was a pleasure to take our girls
away , as usual they demonstrated great team
comradery and good sportsmanship.
PUT THE ‘SNAZZ’ BACK INTO THE SANDWICH!! TRY:
Triple Deckers – make a sandwich with 3 slices of
bread and 2 layers of filling. Remove the crusts
and cut into 3 strips.
Pita Pockets – half a pocket of Pita bread filled
with filling.
Use cookie cutters pressed into your sandwiches
to make some fun sandwich shapes. Imagine how
much fun your child would have eating an animal-
shaped sandwich!
Whole wheat sandwich size crackers (eg.
Sandwich-size crackers) with your child‟s
favourite toppings.
Vary meats – include lean ham, chicken, turkey,
tuna or salmon (in spring water).
Add reduced fat cheeses.
Use a variety of vegies – like grated carrots,
zucchini, lettuce, cucumber and sliced tomatoes
(pat dry to prevent sandwiches from going soggy
and put them between dry fillings).

Cows Create Careers Program
Evans River School along with
nine other schools in the Lismore
region are participating in the
“Cows Create Careers program”.
This six-week program aims to
increase awareness of dairy
industry careers in a very hands on
way. Year 9 Agriculture students
will be rearing two three week-old
calves. Our calves came from Peter
Graham’s dairy farm, Rich River
Farms at Codrington. Peter
outlined to the students how to
feed and look after the calves.
Emphasising the importance of
keeping their stalls clean and aired.
Locally, the project is funded by
Subtropical Dairy and receives
additional support across the state
from local companies Norco and
Genetics Australia.
