From ancient times, familial relationships have formed the essential structure of Jewish society. Sefer Bereshit, the Book of Genesis, offers an example of how this worldview colors even mythic biblical history. The Torah opens with an account of the first family and the tragedies that result from sibling rivalries. But the end of the book demonstrates the blessing that flows from familial harmony; Joseph and his brothers are reconciled, setting the stage for the founding of our Divine covenant. Building upon these formative stories, the Jewish people have referred to themselves in a familial mode for millennia: we are B’nai Yisra’el, the children of Israel. This is a title that speaks of the bonds of love and loyalty that bind us together. Now, as the Temple Anshe Amunim community prepares for its 5773 Annual Meeting, we have the opportunity to reaffirm the strength of this relationship. I’m looking ahead to the Annual Meeting with the same delight with which I anticipate a family reunion. Food, of course, will be served. Stories of the past year will be told. Hopes and dreams will be shared. Triumphs will be celebrated and the memories of those who have passed on will be honored. Much like a family reunion, the fruitfulness of our gathering will be dependent (at least in part) on the presence and participation of its members. In previous columns, I have shared reflections on the many ways in which our temple’s name is a blessing for our congregation. We have chosen to be known as an anshe emunim – a people of faith. The core faith of our community is that we will transmit the blessings of our heritage to the generations that will come after us. This month’s gathering is an important link in the chain of history that connects past, present and future members of this holy community. In the ideal, every member of a family is welcome at a reunion and this is very much the case for our Annual Meeting. Rabbi Josh Breindel

From the Rabbi

A Family ReunionIn many ways, it’s all about family. From ancient times, familial relationships

have formed the essential structure of Jewish society.

Much like a family reunion, the fruitfulness of our gathering will be dependent (at least in part) on the presence and participation of its

members.

Each of us has unique gifts to lend to the community; your presence is essential to creating the strength and wholeness of our community gathering.

I look forward, very much, to celebrating with you as we move together from strength to strength!

TAA’s Board of Trustees is very pleased to announce that The Feigenbaum Foundation made two major donations to Temple Anshe Amunim. The first donation will support the Annual Hilda Vallin Feigenbaum Lecture in perpetuity. The second donation will fund the newly established Dr. Armand V. and Dr. Donald S. Feigenbaum Rabbinic Chair Endowment.

The Feigenbaum Foundation was founded and funded exclusively by brothers Drs. Armand V. Feigenbaum and Donald S. Feigenbaum. Dr. Donald S. Feigenbaum passed away on March 5, 2013, shortly after he and Dr. Armand Feigenbaum voted to award the donations.

The Annual Hilda Vallin Feigenbaum Lecture series is in its 46th year and was established to bring to the Berkshires programs of outstanding cultural significance. The Feigenbaums wanted not only to honor their Mother, Hilda Vallin Feigenbaum, and perpetuate the interest and values of this very warm and highly literate woman, but also to make the enriching treasures of the Jewish spirit accessible to as wide an audience as possible. This gift will assure that the lecture series will continue on as a gift to the entire Berkshire community and will permit Temple Anshe Amunim to provide the high quality guest speakers in an accessible environment that advances the goals for which the series was established.

“The Feigenbaum lecture series was established to honor Hilda Vallin Feigenbaum by bringing a speaker of note to Pittsfield, thus enriching the greater community,” explained Rabbi Josh Briendel.

The Dr. Armand V. and Dr. Donald S. Feigenbaum Rabbinic Chair Endowment was established by the Temple Anshe Amunim Board of Trustees to serve as a living memorial to the contributions of both Drs. Feigenbaum, to honor and recognize these important members of our community. The concept of establishing a Rabbinic Chair endowment, restricted to contributing to the compensation of the Temple’s head rabbi, was discussed with the Feigenbaums as a way

of providing ongoing support to the position of the Temple’s Rabbi while preserving the principal of the endowment for generations to come.

“Donald and Armand Feigenbaum have been pillars in our

Temple community. Their support throughout their lives has been never-ending and has enabled significant growth in Temple life. These two very substantial legacy gifts will help to insure the future of Temple Anshe Amunim for many years to come,” reflected Howard Shapiro.

As the fourth oldest reform congregation in the Northeast region, Temple Anshe Amunim will celebrate its 144th year and has an extensive amount of history and connection to the Jewish community of the Berkshires.

The Feigenbaums were raised in Pittsfield. In 1968, they located their business, General Systems Company, Inc. in Pittsfield. General Systems was founded by Dr. Armand V. Feigenbaum, the father of Total Quality Management, and his brother Dr. Donald S. Feigenbaum, an acknowledged leader in systems management and systems engineering.

General Systems Company, Inc. is the global leader in designing and installing proprietary quality management operating systems which accelerate the competitive business strengths of many of the leading manufacturing and service companies throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Andy Hochberg, the Temple’s Treasurer and Co-Chair of the Annual Hilda Vallin Feigenbaum Lecture, observed, “These gifts will be of great importance in securing the financial foundation of our congregation and assuring that we will continue to provide spiritual services for our community and for the greater Berkshire community for generations to come. Donald and Armand spent their lives working around the world and we are fortunate to have had them here as lifelong Temple members.”

4 ~ Temple Anshe Amunim ~ June, 2013

Rabbi Josh presents:

All the World’s a Stage: the Surprising History of Jews and the TheatreTuesday, June 4th at 12:00 Noon at TAADid you know that West Side Story was originally to have been East Side Story – a tale of forbidden love between a Jewish boy and a Catholic girl? Did you know the musical score for Candide instructs trumpeters to blow “like a shofar”?

Join Rabbi Josh for an engaging (and entertaining) exploration of the long association between Jews and the theatre. Together, we will explore such diverse topics as drama in Jewish worship, Rabbinic perspectives on acting, Yiddish theatre and Jewish contributions to American theatre (with a special focus on Leonard Bernstein).

In addition to being an avid fan (and sometime performer) of theatre, Rabbi Josh has offered “talkbacks” and has served as Rabbinic Consultant for productions of the Barrington Stage Company.

Please bring your own lunch – dessert and coffee will be served.

TAA members: Free / Guests: $5.00

The Chosen atBarrington Stage CompanySunday, July 21, 2013As part of our summer of theater, join Anshe for a performance of The Chosen at Barrington Stage Company on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 5:00 pm.

The Chosen tells the much-beloved story of two boys, two fathers, and two very different Jewish communities in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Set against the backdrop of World War II, Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok’s award-winning adaptation of Potok’s classic novel introduces us to Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, both passionate, intelligent young boys on opposite sides of a baseball game. When Reuven is injured by Danny, a unique friendship is born. As the boys grow up, they learn important lessons about their fathers, their community and themselves.

The performance will take place at Barrington Stage Company Mainstage Theater, 30 Union Street, Pittsfield; Rabbi Josh will lead the post show talkback.

We are offering orchestra tickets at the group rate of $45 for Temple members, $50 for guests. Tickets must be purchased by July 17.

Please make out your checks to the Temple and contact the Temple office at (413) 442-5910 for more information.

6 ~ Temple Anshe Amunim ~ June, 2013

Parashat Bemidbar, the first parasha in the book of Numbers, starts with a census. God tells Moses, “Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their polls” (Num. 1:2).

In the Women’s Torah Commentary, we read that there is power in taking a census. Moses is told to tally up the whole community of the children of Israel. While Western culture places more emphasis on individualism and less on family, the Torah stresses family values, the counting from generation to generation and the link between them. It is not just about counting people; the census relates to family lineage.

Having a census can also be a dangerous thing. In the Talmud we read that it is forbidden to count the nation of Israel, even for the sake of a commandment… whoever counts Israel transgresses a prohibition, as it is written that the number of children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea. Rashi comments that we must count something that each person gives, such as half a shekel, rather than count actual people, because then “there will not be a plague among them for the evil eye can affect that which is counted – and the plague may come upon them as we found in the days of David.”

So what does this teach us? Each person is counted. We all were made in God’s image and therefore a census can help count for purposes of an army or other gathering but not for the sake of valuing each individual (see also the Women’s Torah Commentary, page 810). In fact, in the second verse, we see special language: the words Se’u and Rosh, which literally mean “lift” and “head”. These are basically the key words for this census. The census comes to lift up a person, to give him some pride, to help him to exhibit his personality and to help him connect with himself and others by reflecting on tradition and his connection to his family, the generations before him and the generations to come.

This year, TAA Religious School has not only increased in numbers, but also in ruach, dignity and learning. Many changes have occurred since last summer. Our school has tripled itself, which brought us to reopen our second floor classrooms. We are now using all ten rooms and they have been painted and decorated. New programs were established: Tot Shabbat, Hebrew for young children, religious classes in the morning and afternoon, a new high school, and much more. I’m particularly proud of our students, who have enriched my life this year. Each of them has a unique approach to studying and understanding of texts, whether in Hebrew or in English. The ruach that they bring every Saturday to religious school has made me look forward to each class. As a group, they led an almost monthly Erev Shabbat service and they became better and better each time. Building on our success this year, Rabbi Josh and I are working on an exciting program for next year, taking into account the needs of our students, their level and progress.

As this school year comes to an end, I would like to thank all the parents for entrusting your children to me, for your help and commitment to our religious school. To Rabbi Josh – my rabbi, colleague and friend – thank you for helping to make TAA Religious School what it is. I could not have done it without you.

To Mike Duffy, thank you for enriching our lives with your beautiful musical skills. To Susan and Emery Gagnon thank you for teaching our high school students. To Margie Shulman and Mark Franklin, thank you for stepping up and teaching at our

CHAI program. To Josh Cutler, thank you for all your work for our school this year.Thank you to our education committee and the board of directors for your support. Last but not least, thank you to the students of TAA for what you are. I love you all!Have a wonderful summer and see you all next year.Esther Benari-Altmann

On June 20, we will be discussing Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of HighclereCastle by the Countess of Carnarvon.

This book tells the story behindHighclere Castle, the real-lifeinspiration for the hit PBS show Downton Abbey, and the life of one of its most famous inhabitants, Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon and the basis of the fictional character Lady CoraCrawley. Drawing on a rich store of materials from the archives of Highclere Castle, including diaries, letters, and photographs, the current Lady Carnarvon has written a transporting story of this fabled home on the brink of war

Lady Almina was the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, Alfred de Rothschild, who married hisdaughter off at a young age, her dowry serving as the crucial link in the effort to preserve the Earl of Carnarvon’s ancestral home. Throwing open the doors of Highclere Castle to tend to the wounded of World War I, Lady Almina distinguished herself as a brave and remarkable woman.

The TAA Book Club meets at 11:45 am in the Temple library. You are welcome to bring lunch and a drink to enjoy during the discussion.

8 ~ Temple Anshe Amunim ~ June, 2013

Theater Comes To Temple Anshe AmunimAs we begin another wonderful summer of programs at TAA, we are pleased to announce the first of many theatrical presentations at our Temple. If you love the theater, or just want to enjoy a special Saturday evening, please join us on JUNE 8, 2013 for a staged reading of a new play, Boss, presented by a professional cast under the direction of Temple member, Dr. Barbara Waldinger.

Two cantankerous Jewish men inhabit the ruins of a synagogue in Kabul, Afghanistan. Sparks fly. Thus begins Boss, a new tragi-comedy by Ned Goldreyer, a writer for a number of television shows including The Simpsons, Dilbert, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. A finalist in the nationwide playwriting competition of HRC Showcase Theatre, an Equity company based in Hudson, New York, Boss was given a staged reading there last November. Now that original cast and director come to Temple Anshe Amunim for one night only.

Boss tells the story of the last two survivors of Afghanistan’s once-thriving Jewish community. Although beleaguered and dependent upon one another for their very lives, they hate each other. As they scrap about the nature of existence, faith, and human history, a hostile visitor discovers their hiding place.

Our presentation of Boss will take place on Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 pm. Admission is $18 for Temple members and $20 for guests. This includes a post- presentation reception and discussion with the cast, director and playwright. For reservations please call 413-442-5910.

CHAMPAGNE AND CHOCOLATEFeaturing A Week in The Virgin Islands!

Items are coming in for our “Champagne and Chocolate” art sale and auction. We have gift certificates for local establishments and merchandise for the silent auction. So far, one of the highlights is a week at MAGENS POINT in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (No passport needed)! Also, an afternoon on a boat on Lake Pontoosuc, including lunch, will go to the highest bidder – and add to summertime fun!

We need your creativity, too. Is there someone, a great baker, who will donate a challah every week for three months? How about a cake (or 2 dozen cookies) a month for a year? Is there a ski house that we can auction for a week next winter? How about a gourmet dinner for six or eight in your home (or the winner’s home)? Think about it. Come up with your ideas.

We need your support – getting more items and getting friends to join you for the event on June 30th. Contact those with whom you do business and ask for a donation: hair, nails, photography, restaurants, cleaners,,etc. Please let us know who and what you’ve solicited and get items to the Temple.

Play Analysis ClassJuly 2, 9, 16, and 23Time: 10:30-11:30am

As we move forward with our Temple Anshe Amunim “theater initiative”, please consider joining us for our play analysis class. We will meet on four consecutive Tuesday mornings, beginning July 2, from 10:30 to 11:30 in the Temple library. The class will be led by Dr. Barbara Waldinger, retired professor of Theater Arts at Queens College and Artistic Director of HRC Showcase Theatre in Hudson, New York for the past 12 years. This year’s theme is “What Price Assimilation?“

We will be reading and discussing Arthur Miller’s play, Broken Glass as well as a work by David Margulies entitled Sight Unseen. Both plays are available on Amazon.com. Barbara has recommended an anthology entitled Awake and Sing edited by Ellen Schiff that contains Broken Glass and from which she will choose other plays for the future. We will begin our first session with Sight Unseen.

Last year, the class was stimulating and very proactive. The members of the group, who represent a cross-section of ideologies and backgrounds, engaged in insightful discussions. The cost for this four-session class is $40 for Temple members and$45 for guests. (Please make checks payable to Temple Anshe Amunim) If you wish to attend classes on an individual basis, the cost is $12 per class. We look forward to your participation. Please share this information with your friends and neighbors in the Berkshire community. For more information or to reserve a place in the class, please call the Temple Office at 413-442-5910.

Acting Class TwoAug. 6, 13, 20, and 27Time: 10:30 am-Noon

In the month of August, we will continue with “ACTING TWO“. We will focus on Scene Study. Actors will learn, through a step-by-step process, how to work on a script, culminating in a staged reading of each scene.

The class will be an hour and a half, from 10:30-noon on four consecutive Tuesdays in August beginning, Aug. 6. There is some discussion “behind the scenes“ of a possible Shabbat involvement as well. The cost for this class will be $45 for members and $50 for guests. We encourage full involvement in this class, individual classes may be attended for $13 per class.

As a past participant, I can say it was an exciting experience. Students were given the opportunity to express themselves creatively, unlocking talents they didn’t know they had. It is also a great way to meet new friends.

Please join us for this exciting lunch-and-learn on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 12:00-1:30 pm.

The original story of Daniel was written in two languages around the time of the Maccabean revolt and divided into twovery different parts, one dealing with

adventure and the other with prophecy. Daniel was a folk hero and he continued to be a hero over the succeeding centuries, both because of his amazing magical feats and his ability to tell the future. We will look at various forms of his story: the Old Testament, the medieval Play of Daniel (with music and video) and modern versions.

There will be a fee of $8.00 for members, and $10 forguests. Please bring your lunch; coffee and dessert will be served.
