Tips on Planning Charitable Giving for

the New YearBy The Smith Center for the Performing Arts

A new year has arrived, marking now as an important time for Southern Nevadans to focus on financial planning for the approaching tax season – especially if they’re exploring charitable giving.

It might interest some to learn that nonprofits like The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, as well as many institutions like hospitals and universities, depend on planned giving to sustain their operations for future generations.

Planned giving – a flexible donation option that involves some form of financial planning – can include gifts left in a will, estate plan or life insurance policy, as well as donations in the form of stocks and real estate.

If you’re considering planned giving this year, check out a few tips below on how to best tailor this for your financial needs.Planned Gifts That Make You Income

Some forms of planned giving can both provide revenue to a deserving nonprofit, while also making income for the donor. This can be helpful for retirement and estate planning.

A few of these options include a charitable gift annuity, a chari-table remainder trust, and a charitable lead trust.Tax Breaks

Older community members might be interested in a change in federal law that has made one form of planned giving easier.

It’s now possible every year for individuals 70 and a half or older to make tax-free, charitable gifts up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities.

This allowance used to be dependent on an annual extension by the federal government, but was recently made permanent.

This allows donors to reduce the gift amount from their gross yearly income, earning a potentially significant tax deduction.Defer Gifts After Your Lifetime

Many Southern Nevadans want to make a community impact, but they might not have enough assets or resources to make chari-table gifts immediately.

Various planned giving options, such as designating donations in a will or trust, or listing a nonprofit as a beneficiary for a life insur-ance policy, allow individuals to pledge a gift so they don’t have to give right now, but at a future date.

If an individual pledges a planned gift this way, the recipient organization can count on that gift coming in at a certain time, and can plan accordingly.

Some donors consider this an opportunity to leave a legacy.Learn More

Interested to learn more? The Smith Center offers a Financial Advisors Network (FAN) of professional advisors like accountants, attorneys and bankers to give free financial guidance for donors.

Senior Solutions For Missing TeethYour oral health can directly

impact your overall physical health. For seniors, maintaining good oral health becomes important. This is because as you grow older, you become more suscep-tible to diseases. In fact, nearly 25% of adults between the ages of 65 and 74 have periodontal disease associated with con-stant health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and stroke. About 30% of older adults lose their teeth because, as you age, our mouth changes. The nerves in your mouth get smaller, making your teeth less sensitive to cavities or gum problems. That’s why seeing a den-tal professional is essential to get the right treatment plan for you.

According to Dr. Thomas Gonzales, D.D.S., “I treat a lot of seniors with missing teeth caused by dry mouth from medica-tions, inadequate nutrition and poor oral hygiene. They come in to the office looking for some help because embarrassed to smile.” One solution is the revolution-ary Hybrid 4 procedure. The technique replaces an entire arch of teeth with four implants with no bone grafting while the patient is sedated.

Dr. Gonzales has successfully placed thousands of dental implants in patients for over 30 years at Sedation and Im-plant Dentistry Las Vegas. Whether you have failing teeth, periodontal disease,

bone loss, large partials, or even exist-ing dentures; you are a candidate for this revolutionary procedure. Healing time is cut in half compared to traditional implant techniques too. Your new teeth will func-tion like natural teeth and you will be able eat your favorite foods again. Your smile is yours again; no more embarrassments, or fears of a mishap.

Dr. Thomas R. Gonzales explains, “I can’t tell you how satisfying and rewarding it is when people come in with really bad teeth and leave with a brand new smile in the same day. I’ve been moved to tears when I see their tears. Getting new teeth that work and look natural means everything to them and me.”

Long time patient Greg Dewitt said, “I never liked a dentist and stayed away from the dentist so the time I met Tom, he had a lot of work to do. Tom told me about these dental implants and I was sick. Nobody wants to lose their teeth. But with the trust I have in Tom I knew it was the right thing to do. I got the All-On- 4® (now called Hybrid 4). They’re bolted in and they’re not going anywhere. I could not have been happier. I’ve been missing teeth for 25 years. I’m 62 years old and I had to learn how to chew again. Everybody when they look in the mirror wants to look good and when I look in the mirror I know I look good because of what Tom’s done.

Now people come up to me and say wow what a beautiful smile you have. My wife was so happy that she came in to get work done as well.”

Dr. Gonzales said, “When Greg came he was embarrassed to smile. His teeth were failing and could not be salvaged. We discussed the Hybrid 4 (also known as All-On-4®) procedure and Gregg has been happy ever since.”

Starting the path to your new smile be-gins with making a consultation with Dr. Thomas Gonzales at Sedation and Implant Dentistry Las Vegas. He will complete a thorough examination and actively listen-ing to each patient to determine the right treatment options for your smile.

When you decided to proceed, it’s as simple as selecting your new smile and making an appointment to make it yours.

Even if you have been told that you do not have enough bone in the past, that you would require expensive bone grafts or si-nus lifts, the Hybrid 4 technique can work for you! We have provided healthy new smiles in Las Vegas for over 25 years!

If you, or someone you know, would like more information about personalized treatment with Dr. Gonzales, call (702) 798-6684 for a free consultation including a free CT scan.

Benefits of the Hybrid 4 procedure include:• Helps improve your physical appearance• Improves speech• Eliminates eating discomfort• Prevents bone loss from extracted area• Improves self-esteem• Permanent solution• Safe and effective procedure• Provides the appearance of

Security Field Office Hours

p.m. on Wednesdays, with typical field office hours from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can locate the closest field office to you using our field office locator.

In another move to improve service to the public, Commissioner Saul announced in his Open Letter to the Public at www.socialsecurity.gov/agency/coss-message.html that the agency is hiring 1,100 front line employees to provide service on the agency’s National 800 Number and in its processing centers. The agency is currently bringing onboard 100 new processing center employees and approximately 500 new teleservice representatives for the 800 Number. An additional 500 hires for the 800 Number will occur later in 2020.

“Improving service is my top priority. Increasing full public service hours at our nationwide network of more than 1,200 field offices is the right thing to do and will provide additional access,” Commissioner Saul said. The additional hiring of Na-tional 800 Number and processing center employees is an important step in the right direction to greatly improve the service we provide.”

While we continue to improve both the access to and the experience with our services, it is important to note that most Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. 🔖 Senior Living Guide

January 2020 SeniorConnectionsNV.com 17

In 1980 Pat Dillingham, a former U.S. Olympic figure skater, and founding

members Gene Hardlicka, Roger Hall and Mary Liveratti formed Nevada Senior Games. Staff members of the University of Nevada Las Vegas were instrumental in initiating the Games at the campus where the first annual Nevada Senior Olympic Games, a one-day affair in the spring, was staged.

In 1985 NSG incorporated and NSG's Gene Hardlicka was one of 40 state rep-resentatives who met in Orlando, Florida, for a national organizational seminar. The first Nationals was held in 1987 in St. Louis. Bob Hope was the Master of Cer-emonies at that event’s closing ceremonies. The most recent National Senior Games competition was held in Albuquerque, NM in June 2019 with over 14,000 competitors who enjoyed competition, fitness, making new friendships and renewing old ones.

From those early beginnings, the Ne-vada Senior Games has grown to include over 20 events, held at various venues throughout the Las Vegas area, with an-nual average participation of 1000 seniors. The Fall Games now span a four-week period during mid-September through mid- October. In the Spring NSG sanc-tions Volleyball (Henderson) and Softball (Mesquite) tournaments. There is also a year-round walking program. 2020 is our 40th year of “Fitness for the Fun of It!”

The Nevada Senior Games continues to evolve and to serve the senior community with support from its Board of Directors and supporting staff. NSG recently wel-comed two new members to its executive staff. Liz Palmer was selected as the new Executive Director and is joined by Sandi Stapleton as NSG Office Manager. Liz was an accountant, supervisor, and project manager for over 30 years before retiring with her husband to Las Vegas in 2016. She competed in track and field as a prep athlete, a collegian, and at the masters and senior levels. She coached the sport for youth clubs, high school athletes, and now coaches special needs athletes with Special Olympics Nevada where she was chosen their 2017 Volunteer of the Year.

Sandi is a retired Director, Senior Vice President in the Indirect Auto Lending industry. She moved to Henderson one year ago from San Felipe, Baja California Norte, MX. Sandi started marathoning at age 50 as a racewalker. She completed 4 full marathon and 36 half marathons. She then shifted her focus to track and field and started racewalking & powerwalk-ing events four years ago. Sandi walked The Camino De Santiago from France to Santiago de Compostella (790 km) two years ago and last year walked from

Porto, Portugal to Santiago and then on to Finsterra&Muxia , Spain (486km).

2020 is a qualifying year for the National Senior Games competition, to be held in 2021 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. NSG is anticipating great participation and enthusiasm from its senior athletes. Be part of the fun and excitement this fall as we celebrate throughout the year with various promotions. Check our website, nevadaseniorgames.com, for updates regarding schedules and venues, and “like” our Facebook page.

Four decades is a great milestone and worthy of celebration, which is exactly what the Nevada Senior Games intends to do in 2020!
