New laminating brochure

A new lightweight and compact fast response automatic dispensing valveis now available that is able to control the flow of dispensed material indirect proportion to the speed of the robot to which it is attached.

This facility is particularly useful in automated gasketing applicationswhere a constant bead width is usually required to be maintained

regardless of any variations in the linearspeed of the robot, or in other cases, where variations of the bead size isneeded despite a constant speed ofapplication by the robot.

The new valve, which is also designed tohandle abrasive materials makes use oflinear motor technology coupled to a pneumaticamplifier and communicates with the robot via asimple 0 - 10 volt analogue signal, resulting inprecisely controlled and highly accurateadjustable flow rates of up to 1 litre/minute.

gear pump, the rotational speed of whichis closely controlled in order to preciselymanage the flow of sealant into the windowframe. The pump module is located directlyabove the robot station on an overheadgantry in close proximity to the robot.

A material pressure regulator fitted betweenthe two pumps ensures a smooth flow ofmaterial at the correct pressure.

Finally, a DOPAG membrane typedispensing valve, mounted onto the robotand fitted with a special application nozzledispenses the metered silicone.

1a hunkeler’s new facility should ensurethat their products are fit for a palace formany more years.

When Swiss window manufacturer1a hunkeler needed to increase

production and modernise the fabricationfacilities of their patented TOP-WIN® rangeof windows, they turned to DOPAG forassistance.

The TOP-WIN® range of windows has seta new milestone in window constructionachieving up to 30% increase in lightpenetration whilst simultaneouslyincreasing thermal and acoustic insulationproperties.

As part of this development and tomaximise efficiency, 1a hunkeler chose to automate the process that involvedapplying a bead of sealant between theinsulated glass and the frame of eachwindow.

The semi-automated procedure involvesmanually placing the window frames ontoa robot table where a bar code readerautomatically recognises the type of frame. Double-sided adhesive tape is then applied, after which the frame istransported to a second station where a robot places the insulated glass onto the tape.

The first robot then moves into position toapply the sealant between the frame andthe glass. A single component siliconematerial was selected for this application.

Working closely with the robot integrator,DOPAG designed a system to pump thesilicone directly from the 20 litre hobbocksin which it was supplied, using a P30 drumpump. This pump feeds the sealant to a

Springinginto action

For several decades,STABILUS gas springs

and dampers have been well known for their successful use in the automobile and furnitureindustries, providing a practicaldesign element in more than 300different applications, whereverassistance in lifting, lowering, moving or adjusting is needed.

Applications in industries other than automotive, (where they areused for trunk, tailgate, door andhood opening, as well as providingcomfort and safety in seatadjustment applications), haveevolved and STABILUS hydro-pneumatic gas springs can now be found in such diverse productsas hospital beds, operating theatretables, roof windows, and officeseating.

Located in Koblenz in Germany, thecompany is a leading worldwidemanufacturer of gas springs, producing 120 million units annually, each and every one of which mustbe lubricated with accurate andrepeatable volumes of grease or oil, depending on the location within the gas spring assembly.

During the assembly process the gas springs, which have beenloaded onto a rotary table, firstlyrequire a small pre-determinedvolume of grease to be auto -matically applied to the piston rods. This is achieved at the firstlubricating station by means ofDOPAG needle type meteringvalves, each capable of accuratelymetering volumes between 0.001and 3.0 ml with each shot.

At the second lubricating station, tiny drops of oil are metered ontothe double lip seals in the cylindersin order to minimise friction, usingDOPAG chamber type meteringvalves. This type of metering valve is particularly useful for suchapplications as they feature a snuff-back facility.

This characteristic avoids thepossibility of unwanted drips of oil contaminating other parts or components following theconclusion of the metering process.

Finally, at a third station, a pre-determined volume of oil is metered into the cylinders using a flowmeter system controlled byMR20 metering controllers beforethe cylinders are charged withnitrogen.

The entire lubrication cycle is thuscompleted automatically, thanks to Hilger u. Kern / Dopag Groupadvanced metering technology.

Deep seasoundings

Established in 1971,Sonardyne is a recognised

world leader in the design, develop -ment and support of underwateracoustic navigation, positioning and communications systems.

Applications for their extensiveproduct range are found within the offshore oil exploration, construction, drilling andoceanographic industries.

Their acoustic navigation andunderwater positioning systemsprovide the highest accuracy andlowest risk whether you arenavigating a diver in shallow wateror installing equipment severalthousand metres deep on theseabed.

Every transponder manu -factured by Sonardyne mustbe protected from thepotentially damaging

effects of immersion in seawater byencapsulating the sensitive acoustictransducer in polyurethane.

In order to maintain the Company'sexacting standards, this importantprocess must take place in atemperature and humidity controlledenvironment, since excessivehumidity could cause the isocyanatecomponent of the polyurethane to crystallise, whilst variations intemperature would affect the potlife of the mixed material.

With this in mind, Sonardyne have recently constructed a newencapsulation facility where threedifferent formulations of twocomponent polyurethane can bedispensed onto the components inindividual fume extraction cabinets.

As part of this state of the artfacility, Sonardyne chose DOPAGELDO-MIX 101 systems to meter,

mix and dispense the polyurethaneencapsulant onto their components.

These gear pump driven systemshave the flexibility to precisely adjustflow rates quickly and easily whennecessary, whilst mixing ratios canalso be changed simply by selectingan additional programme from thecontroller.

The ELDO-MIX 101 systems are fedby pressure vessels, each of whichare stowed neatly beneath theirindividual fume cabinets, whilst thecontrol panels are wall mountedtogether at a convenient height for the operator.

Dispensing then takes place withDOPAG twin valves, fitted with staticdisposable mixers, ensuring trouble-free, precise encapsulation ofcomponents destined for the harshenvironment of the world’s oceans.

components, which are mixed at a ratio of 100:100, are firstlydegassed separately in pressurefeed containers to ensure a bubblefree LCD display.

They are then fed, again separately,to the MICRO-MIX system wherethey are proportioned and fed underpressure to the twin dispensingvalve where they are homogenouslymixed using a static mixing system.

A small bore flexible plastic tube isthen used by the operator to directthe mixed shot of silicone into asmall hole in the rear of the sensorsvia a tapered nozzle, followingwhich the sensors are finally heatedin an oven to assist with the curingtime.

Accuracy, repeatability and reliability, backed up by first class service is a requirement of this progressivecompany, which is why SchraderElectronics were once again happyto select equipment from the Hilgeru. Kern / Dopag Group for theirproduction needs.

they have developed an intelligentpressure sensor for use in themedical industry.

Code named TIPI, this diminutivedevice - it measures just 40 mmsquare across its face, is designedfor use with pressurised gascylinders, where it can monitor, display and transmit not only thepressure in the cylinder, but alsoadditional vital information such asthe remaining volume of gas left inthe cylinder, whilst simultaneouslydisplaying the amount of timeremaining available for gas use.

Following assembly of the devices, they are encapsulated with a twocomponent clear silicone, whichserves both to protect the sensitiveelectronics located within thehousing and to securely fix thetransparent screen in place.

Schrader chose a DOPAG MICRO-MIX E to meter, mix and dispensethe silicone into the sensors in 5gram shots, each shot actuatedby the operator depressing a foot pedal. The two silicone

regulations as restrictive, but inNorthern Ireland, Antrim basedSchrader Electronics, a smallcompany by international standardsbut the leader in its field, welcomesa law passed in Washington whichhas driven its sales from £45 millionthree years ago to more than £110million today.

Schrader Electronics designs andmanufacturers remote tyre pressuremonitoring systems, which haveincreasingly been adopted by theworld’s leading car manufacturers, but from the end of next year, everysingle car sold in the United States, including imported models will have to be fitted with these safetydevices. At current estimates, thatmeans four sensors for each of 16million cars!

Unphased by this massiveopportunity, Schrader are nowapplying this technology toapplications in other diverseindustries and in their first forayoutside of the automotive sector,
