A few years ago, I worked at a instal-lation where a common access card was needed to access the facility. The system worked perfectly, but it had one flaw: It was vulnerable to social engi-neering attack due to human error.

Humans have a natural tendency to trust others and believe everyone has good intentions. This creates an environment where social engineering can become a real threat to security.

Without paying close attention to who’s around them, many people have been allowed access to sensitive and even secure facilities. By closely fol-lowing someone who uses their card to gain access through a social engi-neering technique called “piggyback-ing,” many people have just walked in and put secure areas, facilities, networks and personnel in an organi-zation at risk with very little effort.

The method of social engineering attacks against networks differs from actual hacking only in its technique. Its prime objective is still to gain access to information or systems with the intent to cause damage or disruption of network availability, integrity or confidentiality.

Social engineering is hacking through deception or deceit. Numer-ous awareness articles are published on the danger of human willing-ness to openly trust people. Because of the trust factor, people are the weakest link in the security chain.

How do you recognize social engineer-ing attempts? Here are just a few ways.

It can be done by telephone, which is the most common form of social engi-neering. A hacker will call and imitate someone in a position of authority. This is a serious issue for any organization that has a help desk operation. The best

way to counteract this type of attack is to teach people not to be in awe of rank. Also, validate whom you are speaking with on the other end of the phone, confirm their identity, credentials and their need to have access to information.

Second, another social engineering technique is being familiar with people who frequently visit your organization. How about the delivery person who delivers packages to your organization? People can become complacent and just because the person does business on occasion, they can access an area with ease because people will “trust” the person and let them in without check-ing their reason for being there or who they need to conduct business with.

To counteract this attack, check a person’s credentials, have them sign in and out, then call the organization they will be visiting to validate they have official business to conduct.

Another facet of social engineering is called “dumpster diving,” where intrud-ers access facilities discarded informa-tion via trash cans or dumpsters. This not only makes networks vulnerable, but can also put people in jeopardy because of their position in the organization.

What may be taken for granted as being unimportant can be put together with other information to form a picture of the organization’s mission. Personal information can also be obtained by

what is thrown away from names to personal address and phone numbers. When in doubt, shred anything that may be usable to exploit informa-tion and security in an organization.

Lastly, social engineers can access valuable information by being friendly. Everyone likes to feel proud of their position and work in an organization. An expert in social engineering can literally talk you into revealing informa-tion without you knowing it. They do it by puffing up a person’s ego, baiting the person over time by building a close relationship, flattery and even flirtation.

Be careful whom you provide in-formation to. If someone asks for information and you’re not sure if they need to know, ask a common question, "Why do you need to know this?” If they persist in their attempt, contact your supervisor, commander or local security professionals.

The bottom line is, people are the most valuable resource in any organization, but they are just as vulnerable as our networks. Hu-man nature is the weakest link to combating social engineering.

Social engineering exists because people believe “it can’t happen to me.” Be vigilant and remember the old adage “Loose lips sink ships.” The security of the network and your organization depends on you.

Air Force members interested in astronaut duty can submit an application to NASA, via the USAJobs website, through Jan. 27, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

“Applicants who submit an application through the USAJobs site, must also do a separate application for the Air Force nomination board,” said Howard Peterson, AFPC special flying programs section. “Submitting an application through USAJobs also requires members have a USAJobs account and a resume on file.”

To be eligible, members must be active duty officers or enlisted, be U.S. citizens, and have earned a bachelor’s degree or graduated from an accredited institution in engineering, mathematics, biological science, or physical science.

“The quality of academic preparation is critical,” said Peterson. “Astronaut candidates are challenged intellectually and physically, so applicants must ensure they are prepared for the challenge.”

In addition to the right degree, Peterson said, members must have at least three years after degree completion of progressively respon-sible, professional experience or a minimum of 1,000 hours as pilot-in-command of a jet aircraft. Advanced degrees are desirable, but experience may be partially substituted, he explained.

Applicants must also have a current flying class II physical (com-pleted on or after Aug. 31, 2011), be between 62 and 75 inches tall, have vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye, hearing within ISO standards, and blood pressure of no more than 140/90.

Applicants selected for the candidate positions will enter a two-year

training and education program, Peterson said. After the two years, trainees who are selected for the astronaut program will serve a five-year tour with NASA.

Largest MLK march in U.S. celebrates 25 yearsBy the City of San Antonio Communication and Public Affairs Office

More than 200,000 people are expect-ed to participate in the 25th anniversary of the nation’s largest Martin Luther King Jr. March Monday in San Antonio. A testament to Dr. King’s impact on all Americans, the local march will be ac-companied by various events beginning Saturday and running through Tuesday. Martin Luther King III, eldest son of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, will deliver a keynote address at this historic celebra-tion.

The other major event for the MLK March is the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wreath-laying ceremony Sunday.

Each year since 1987, the city of San Antonio has celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a commemorative march. The theme of San Antonio’s 25th anniversary march is “Journey Beyond the March – Live Beyond the Dream.”

“The 25th anniversary of the city of San Antonio’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebra-tion is a major milestone for our commu-nity and a testament to San Antonio’s rich

cultural and historical legacy,” San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro said. “To have Martin Luther King III and Ilyasah Shabazz, third daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, celebrate this momentous anniversary by attending our city’s celebration speaks to how important this commemoration of Dr. King’s influence is – not just locally, but to the entire country.”

Sunday, the MLK Commission is honored to have retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Toreas-er Steele lay the wreath at the ceremony. Her successful career included serving as commander of Air Force basic training at Joint Base San Antonio- Lackland. She is also the past development director of the George Gervin Youth Center Inc. The public is invited to attend the ceremonies at MLK Plaza, North New Braunfels Avenue and East Houston Street in San Antonio, at 2 p.m.

“San Antonio can be proud of hosting the largest MLK March,” Railroad Commis-sioner Art Hall said. “This is a significant achievement for the seventh largest city in the United States, whose African-American population totals approximately 6 percent.

WASHINGTON – The Department of Defense’s new, 10-year strategy will en-sure the U.S. remains the world’s strongest military power, DoD leaders emphasized in weekend interviews.

In an interview with Bob Schieffer that aired Sunday on the CBS news program “Face the Nation,” Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chair-man Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey said the department is changing to respond to a new global reality.

The strategy, announced Jan. 5, outlines defense priorities for the coming decade and emphasizes trimming the force while investing in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance programs, combating anti-access technologies, countering weapons of mass destruction and prevailing in all domains, including the cyber world.

“Clearly, we face the constriction of having to reduce the budget by almost half a trillion dollars,” Panetta said. “We developed a strategy that said (the military) is going to be leaner, it is going to be smaller, but it has to be agile, it has to be adaptable, it has to be flexible, quickly deployable, and it has to be technologically advanced. That’s the kind of force we need for the future.”

The department’s plan calls for priority emphasis on the Pacific and the Middle East, while maintaining a presence else-where, Panetta noted.

“The bottom line is, when we face an aggressor anyplace in this world, we’re going to be able to respond and defeat them,” he added.

Dempsey said a popular misconception about the new strategy assumes the na-tion’s forces will no longer be able to fight more than one conflict at a time.

“In fact, we were pretty adamant that we must be able to do more than one thing at a time, and by the way not limit ourselves to two,” Dempsey said. “The threat, and the environment in which we find ourselves in this decade of the 21st century, suggests to us that it’s likely to be more than two.”

The strategy aims to build a force capable across the military operation-al spectrum with the leadership, man-ning and equipment to provide options to the national command authority, Dempsey noted.

One point that may have been un-deremphasized, he added, is that the military has “learned an enormous amount over the last 10 years about how to wage war.”

Dempsey said the military has devel-oped strengths unforeseen a decade ago, noting its capabilities in special operations,

intelligence, surveillance and reconnais-sance, and cyber.

“What we’re looking to do here is not constrain ourselves to a two-war construct, but rather build a force that has the kind of agility the secretary mentioned, that is a learning organization that will adapt itself to what it confronts,” he said.

The military has seen a decade of high demand, and defense leaders are working to ensure the force size remains adequate and adaptive to future missions, he said.

“We do have a ... significant, ca-pable (National) Guard and Reserve component, and an active component that has learned a lot over the last 10 years,” Dempsey noted. “What we’re trying to do is break the template and think about different ways of accom-plishing the task, to give more options

to our nation’s leaders.”The geopolitical and economic chal-

lenges of 2012 demand a shift in military power, the general said.

“What we’re trying to do is chal-lenge ourselves to respond to that shift and to react to that strategic inflection point,” he said.

Dempsey said his concern is that in light of changing strategy and budget issues, some will see the U.S. as a nation and a military in decline.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Dempsey said. “That miscalcula-tion could be troublesome ... it could cause even our close partners to wonder, what kind of partner are we? So what I’d like to say right now is, we’re the same partner we’ve always been and intend to remain that way.”

Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV as-sumed command of U.S. Army North in a ceremony at 4 p.m. Thursday at the historic Quadrangle on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.

The event was hosted by Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., commanding general of U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

Caldwell came to JBSA-FSH from Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he held several positions. While at Fort Leavenworth, the general was commanding gen-eral of U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth; commandant of U.S. Army Command

and General Staff College; deputy commanding general for Combined Arms, U.S. Training and Doctrine Command; and director of the Joint Center for International Security Force Assistance.

The U.S. Army Combined Arms Center is the command that oversees the command and General Staff Col-lege and 17 other schools, centers and training programs located throughout the United States.

His prior deployments and as-signments include serving as deputy chief of staff for strategic effects and spokesperson for the Multi-National

Force – Iraq; commanding general of the 82nd Air-borne Division; senior military assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense; deputy director for operations

for the United States Pacific Command; assistant di-vision commander, 25th Infantry Division; executive assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; commander, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division; a White House Fellow, The White House; politico-mili-tary officer in Haiti during Operation Restore/Uphold Democracy; assistant chief of staff for operations, 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; and chief of plans for the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Just Cause in Panama.

Caldwell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1976. He earned master’s degrees from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and from the School for Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and Gen-eral Staff College. The general also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, as a Senior Service College fellow.

Deployed civilian captures 332nd AEW history By Senior Airman Melanie Holochwos332nd Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs

Very few individuals know exactly what wing historians do on a daily basis. Often overlooked and misunderstood, they may just have one of the most important jobs of all, which is telling the Air Force story.

Meet Lane Bourgeois, 332nd Air Expedi-tionary Wing historian, deployed from Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. Although he is a civilian, he proudly wears Airman bat-tle uniform and combat boots to work every day. Deployments are his norm, as this is his third in fi ve years. And, although he has served his country for 27 years, he doesn’t have any retirement plans.

So, what does this wing historian do ev-ery day at an undisclosed location in South-west Asia?

“It’s probably the most common question I get asked,” Bourgeois laughed. “Simply stat-ed, I collect and preserve information.”

It’s a little bit more complicated than that. Especially since his workload is about 10 times as heavy as it is for him back at home. Bourgeois is usually at the offi ce for at least 12 hours a day.

“On this deployment, I’ve been collecting about 1,500 to 2,000 pieces of documentation per month,” he said. “This includes photo-graphs, statistics and offi cial records – basi-cally anything that shows what our Airmen are doing here on a daily basis. When pilots notice something different on a mission, I take note. When leaders make decisions, I keep track. And I do this so future leaders can learn from them.”

But collecting the information is just the starting point. After Bourgeois computes the fl ying hours and other information, he orga-nizes it into a monthly report. This 50-page-plus document is sent to Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., for editing. After he makes the corrections and the wing commander signs it, the history ends up at the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. It is there where our Air Force leaders can access and learn from it.

From maintenance technical orders to high school history books, the information Bour-geois and other historians collect can end up practically anywhere. It exists so service members have a choice. They can ask them-selves, do I want to repeat this history or learn from it?

For the first time in more than 10 years, active-duty security forces per-sonnel at Joint Base San Antonio-Ran-dolph are working eight-hour shifts. The changeover from 12- to eight-hour shifts took place Jan. 3.

Twelve-hour shifts for security forces Airmen became routine about a decade ago, when the Global War on Terrorism resulted in more deploy-

ments, but now there is an emphasis on eight-hour shifts to combat fatigue and provide more training.

“Eight-hour shifts used to be the norm,” Capt. Antwan Floyd, 902nd Security Forces Squadron operations officer, said. “Security forces went to 12-hour shifts because of increased deployments. Deployments were so heavy they didn’t have enough people to do eight-hour shifts. What we were able to do was come up with a sched-ule of rotations to go into eight-hour

shifts without additional manpower.”Floyd said part of the reluctance to

commit to eight-hour shifts was due to a possible worst-case scenario where as many as 50 security forces Air-men would be deployed for about a two-month period. He said eight-hour shifts were possible except for those periods, but that would have required shifting back and forth between eight- and 12-hour shifts.

“Nobody wanted to do that, so we went to straight 12-hour shifts,” he said.

But Floyd said the worst-case scenario is the exception, not the rule.

“We’re responsible for 25 deployments (at a time), but they’re usually staggered, so the most that are deployed are about 13 at a time,” he said.

Floyd said problems of a 12-hour shift included the inability to mandate physi-cal training and provide adequate com-bat skills training for Airmen, who had to come in on their days off for PT and one day of training per month.

“Those 12-hour days are actually 14-hour days because they come in an hour early to arm up and they leave an hour late,” he said. “We were able to cut four hours out of the day, so that was big time. Now they can get in PT five days a week.”

The squadron will also be able to of-fer combat skills training in two-week blocks every quarter.

“They’ll be getting more combat skills training that will better prepare them for their deployments,” Floyd said.

Another issue was diminished pro-ductivity due to fatigue.

“The fatigue factor was huge,” Floyd said, especially late in their shift and on the third day of their schedule. “We were seeing more ac-cidents, more mistakes being made and less production.”

Floyd said Maj. Robert Ford, 902nd SFS commander, endorsed the new schedule in November, and Col. Scott Peel, 902nd Mission Support Group commander, ap-proved it in December.

“We were able to accomplish it without accepting any additional risks,” he said

Ford said personnel were used to 12-hour shifts, but are now excited about the new schedule, where they work six days in a row and are off for three days.

“They were being asked to do more and more during their deployments, but not getting the training,” he said. “Now they will get that. The most im-portant thing for me is that we’ll be able to get better training and have PT five days a week.”

Joint Base San Antonio is currently conducting an energy competition at JBSA-Randolph with the goal of reducing energy consumption.

The chart below tracks the energy intensity reduction rankings of units at JBSA-Randolph for the past three months.

This achievement signifies the importance King values for the city of San Antonio. The march is truly “more than a march. It is a uniting of the community.”

Monday, marchers will gather in the city’s historic East Side at the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, 3501 Martin Luther King Drive, at 10 a.m. when the march will begin.

The crowd will then set off on a 2.75-mile march. The route includes Martin Luther King Drive and con-cludes at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa St. Here, the keynote address will be given by Martin Luther King III, a noted human rights advocate and com-munity activist in his own right.

Nonprofit organizations will pro-vide food and refreshments for at-

tendees as fundraisers for their own organizations. In addition, there will be a job fair and health screening programs administered at sever-al booths. The event will conclude around 2:30 p.m.

Other events include a Youth Em-powerment Summit Saturday, 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., at St. Philip’s College; Sunday, 4-6 p.m., at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and a guest lecture by Ilyasah Shabazz, Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m., at Trinity University, 1 Trinity Place, San Antonio.

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The 2011 Joint Base San Antonio air show was conducted on Oct. 29 and 30 at Randolph Air Force Base, but the event will now take place every other year rather than the annual schedule of the past.

Brig. Gen. Theresa Carter, Joint Base San Antonio commander, cites budgetary constraints within the Department of Defense and the Air Force for the decision.

“Many bases host air shows on an infrequent basis, every two to three years, so we’ve been fortunate in the greater San Antonio area to enjoy a show every year. Funding reductions prevent us from maintaining that pace but we are committed to hosting an event every other year,” she said.

The air shows have alternated years at Lackland Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base in conjunction with San Antonio’s Celebrate America’s Military activities. The next Joint Base San Antonio air show takes place in 2013.

Joint Base San Antonio air shows move to every other year

An appointment is designated as a no-show when a patient does not keep a scheduled appointment or cancels less than two hours prior to a scheduled appointment.

Patients can cancel their appointments by selecting the cancellation option during the audiocare appointment reminder call, canceling via TRICARE online or simply calling the Consult Appointment Management Office appointment line.

For any no-shows, patients will be contact-ed within 48 hours of their missed appoint-ment. The reason for missed appointment will be determined and follow-up recommendations

made based upon the patient’s clinical need. For two or more no-shows within a six-

month period in a specialty clinic without valid justification (example: sudden acute ill-ness), all future specialty appointments within that clinic will be canceled and the patient’s Primary Care Manager will be contacted. The patient will require a new referral from the PCM if the specialty care is still needed.

Patients who arrive more than 10 minutes past their scheduled appointment time will be considered late.

CAC/IDs require appointmentsJoint Base San Antonio has

implemented new procedures for customers requiring new identifica-tion cards, common access cards and Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System services.

To reduce excessive wait times, JBSA has replaced the walk-in customer services available at its main ID Card/CAC issuance facilities with an all-day appoint-ment-only process for all military members, retirees, dependents, civil service employees and contractors. Appointment times are between 8 a.m. and 3:20 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will be scheduled at 20 minute intervals.

Changes to existing ID Card/CAC and DEERS services will only affect the main DEERS ID Card/CAC issuance facilities at these locations:

A new year often begins with resolu-tions to lose weight and get in shape. Air Force services officials recently launched a new program designed to help Airmen and families accomplish this common goal through proper nutrition and activity.

The USAF FitFamily website now in-cludes LivingFit, an online interactive tool that allows participants to set weight loss goals, monitor their progress and receive tips and tools to help them stay on a healthy track. LivingFit expands the resources on www.usaffitfamily.com and provides another tool for Airmen and fam-ilies to stay fit and motivated, Condredge Fisher, Air Force Services Agency youth specialist, said.

“The LivingFit program identifies a key component in being resilient, which is being healthy,” he said. “I believe when families watch their nutrition and maintain healthy body weight, they will be in better physical and mental shape to face challenges caused by deployments, separation, permanent change of station moves, etc.”

To sign up, users must register at www.usaflivingfit.com to create a profile. They will enter their current weight, goal weight, the date they’d like to achieve their weight loss and their activity level. Once a profile is created, users can design custom meal plans as well as goal activities. Activities are categorized as bronze, silver and gold, ranging from nonvigorous to challenging.

LivingFit will keep users on track through automated emails to remind them to record their weight each week. Fisher said the meal plans and nutritional guide-lines are two of the most useful tools the program offers.

“Included in the meal plan is an option to choose your ideal weight, meal options and menu ideas to support your meal choices,” he said. “The nutritional guidelines include nutritional tips, an ‘eat this not that’ section and a fast food healthy option section.”

Once users meet their goals, they can set new goals or just come back to the site to continue maintaining their healthy lifestyle.

“The hope is Airmen and families form healthy habits and they continue to visit the site to view new content or add their own content such as photos and stories,”
