Even if youre not Italian,everyone in Lincoln canbecome Italian for a day

from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday,May 22 when Little Italy is cre-ated here.

The youth-focused nonprofitFriends of Lincoln Kids organi-zation will turn Historic Down-town Lincoln into a festive Ital-ian marketplace featuring someof the best in Italian culture andcuisine for the day.

This free inaugural ItalianFestival was inspired by JeffGreenberg, president of Friendsof Lincoln Kids.

I was born in the Italian sec-tion of the west end of Boston,Greenberg said. I grew upsteeped in the comfort and rich

traditions of family-focusedItalian life. I wanted to sharesome of it with our community,and in turn, help enrich thelives of Lincolns children.

All proceeds from this event will go to Friends of LincolnKids. The organization will dis-tribute proceeds to Friends ofthe Lincoln Librarys MotherGoose on the Loose program.

In keeping with the familytheme, there will be somethingfor everyone at this admission-free event, including free park-ing.

Maria Eugenios and hertroupe of Vaudeville Playersfrom Lincoln Hills will providetraditional Italian music, com-plete with an accordion andskits. Stilt walker Rich Rudis will

tower over the festivities turn-ing faces of all ages into smiles.

Also performing oldies-butgoldies tunes will be Jay andthe Studebakers.

Authentic Italian food,desserts, drink and much morewill be sold on 5th and F streets

by area vendors.After filling your tanks on F

Street, youll be ready to pedal,roll or cruise your feet along 5thStreets Classic Car Show.

The Lincoln Archives, main-tained by The Native Sons ofThe Golden West, will be openduring the festival, which coin-cides with the Native Sons150th anniversary.

Friends of the LincolnLibrary, representing theCarnegie and Twelve Bridgeslibraries, will also have a boothto raise awareness and moneyfor the popular libraries andtheir programs. A silent auction will feature the generous giftcertificate donated by LoneBuffalo Vineyards. The winningbid will enjoy a hors doeuvres

and wine tasting for eight to 10participants, along with a $50bottle of wine to take home.

Last years All American RibFestival, also sponsored byFriends of Lincoln Kids,brought 10,000 to15,000 visitorsto downtown and raised fundsfor the Lincoln Rifle Clubs jun-ior division and other youthprojects, according to Green-berg. The next annual Rib Festis set for Sept. 11 and will fea-ture an antique fair.

Volunteers from the LincolnRifle Clubs Junior Division andthe Boy Scouts will donate theirlabor and skills to the ItalianFestival before, during and afterthe festival.

Joe Dunlap will supply Lin-colns inaugural Italian Festivalwith an interesting twist on Ital-ian food downtown on May 22.

That twist is in the form of bar-beque spaghetti.

Dunlap owns Big Joes BBQ, aCitrus Heights company thatcaters food including barbecuedmeat, cole slaw and potato sal-ad.

For those of you who are imag-ining a pile of spaghetti ploppedon a grill, you can put your imag-ination to rest because nospaghetti will touch a barbecue.

While the spaghetti will not beon the grill, some other ingredi-ents will.

Dunlap said the barbequespaghetti is a mixture of smoked

barbeque pork, sauted onionand green peppers, spaghettiand his own barbeque sauce.

His inspiration for the bar-beque spaghetti came from aMemphis barbeque restaurantthat cooks up the pasta.

I kind of followed what theydid but its my barbeque sauce,Dunlap said. Its like regularspaghetti with some sweetnessto it, and instead of meatballs, you have pulled pork. It hassome smoky flavor because ofthe pulled pork.

When his restaurant, Big JoesBBQ, was open in CitrusHeights, he served the spaghettito customers.

People either loved it or hatedit but more people loved it,Dunlap said. The kids really

loved it, probably because it hassweetness to it because of thebarbeque sauce, Dunlap said.

In addition to the barbequespaghetti, Dunlap said hell serveup some barbequed Italiansausage at the Italian Festival.

Dunlap also served ribs at lastyears Rib Festival, and while hesnot sure what to expect fromLincolns inaugural Italian Festi-val, he said its a good idea.

So why should residents givethe barbeque spaghetti a shot?

They wont have the opportu-nity to try it anywhere else,Dunlap said.

After growing weary of thetime consuming and cost-ly maintenance of a lawn,

Ray and Mary Trujillo, 76 and 77respectively, decided to makesome changes a few years ago.

They had moved to Lincoln inMay of 2000 after selling theirhome on five acres in Rescue.

Today, the Trujillos grow moreflowers, fruits and vegetables intheir modest suburban gardenthan they ever did on their ram-bling five acres in Rescue.

The Trujillos, who have beenmarried 53 years, started thegardening project by removingtheir lawn and planting a myri-ad of flowers according to theproper season.

It didnt take long for the daf-fodils, sweet Williams, roses,

irises, columbine, ranunculus,lilies, amaryllis, alstomeria,azaleas, clematis, poppies, 25orchid plants and so manymore to fill their front and rearyards with Monet-like master-pieces of natural and eco-friendly beauty.

By making the change fromthirsty lawns to energeticflowerbeds, the Trujillos alsoreduced their monthly waterconsumption from 20,000 gal-lons to between 8,000 and10,000 gallons.

Their rear yard is a mirrorimage of the front, with someadded twists and turns aroundto the side yard where a greengrocers delight of fruits andvegetables eagerly ascend fromtheir 6-raised beds.

If it has a seed, Ill try to grow it, Maryproudly said. Some are trial by error. Ihave my failures but I love the challengesand rewards.

From placing Christmas tree lightsaround the avocado tree to keep thefrost at bay or using 20 little tree lights inhis homemade seedling incubator box(hot box), Ray and Mary learn from eachnew challenge.

The proof of their tender loving care isalmost audible in the roll call of toma-toes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, egg-plant, persimmon, onions, carrots, gar-lic, potatoes, turnips, strawberries, gua-va, plums, pears, peaches, nectarines,lemons, lettuce, mint, oregano, thyme,sage, rosemary and more!

Together, this hearty couple grows,harvests and cans hundreds of poundsof fresh produce a year.

The Trujillos are doing what comes

naturally to preserve the environmentfor their three grandchildren, whilereducing the impact of more conven-tional gardens.

Warm, hand-madetortilla chips and abig scoop of fried

ice cream were a goodstart and finish of my vis-it to Casa Ramos lastTuesday afternoon.

When my husband, Andy, and I walked intothe restaurant last week, it was hard to tell that itused to be an Applebees.

Potted plants and pot-tery adorn almost everysurface except for tables,and the wooden sunflow-ers on the back of chairsand benches livened upthe restaurant on whatwas a rainy day.

Our meal started out with the ubiquitous tor-tilla chips and salsa, but

what set these chips apartis that they were warm when they got to thetable.

Andy was impressed,and was curious to knowif they were made in therestaurant.

Raul Lecona, who ownsthe restaurant with hisuncle, Marco Ramos, con-firmed that the chips areindeed made daily. Whilethe restaurant does notmake the tortillas fromscratch, they use them tomake tortillas and tacoshells daily.

I ordered a combina-tion plate, and chose achalupa and tostada, while my husbandordered the lunch sizeportion of the chicken

fajitas.The fajitas were sizzling

away when they werebrought to the table and Andy said the chickenfrom the fajitas was verymoist and the onions hada sweet, grilled taste.

He also said the lunchportion was a good sizebecause it wasnt too big.

That wasnt the case forwhat I ordered, so if youare really hungry, thecombination plate withtwo items would be per-

My meal came with achoice of beans, whichwas nice because a lot ofplaces just give yourefried beans.

I was given the optionof pinto, black or refriedbeans, and I went with theblack, which were verytasty.

The chicken tostadaand chicken chalupa werehuge, and what I likedbest about them was thechicken.

Its been my experienceat a lot of Mexican restau-rants that the chicken isusually dry, as in not in asauce but just marinated,in the various entrees.

That was not the case at

Casa Ramos, because thechicken in my chalupaand tostada was smoth-ered in a sauce.

The sauce is tomato-based with chicken brothand red chili, according toLecona.

We saved room fordessert after Andy spottedfried ice cream on themenu, and it was totally

worth it.Id never had fried ice

cream before and it wasunlike anything Ive everhad. We both agreed that

we may go to Casa Ramosjust for the fried ice creamsome time.

It was a scoop of icecream rolled in cerealcrumbs deep fried toppedwith whipped cream andchocolate sauce, served ina cinnamon-sugar tortillabowl.

Its pretty much the bestitem Ive ever tasted.

Casa Ramos has servedMexican food in Lincolnsince January of this year.

Ramos told The NewsMessenger they choseLincoln as the place fortheir 11th restaurantbecause of its growth andlack of Mexican foodrestaurants.

Lecona said businesshas been steady, and cus-tomers have been tellinghim Lincoln needed agood Mexican food andsit-down restaurant.

Casa Ramos offersentertainment, too, asLecona said two musi-cians play songs like LaCucuracha and La Bam-ba from 5 to 8 p.m. Mon-
