November/December 2012

The Ban-Joe’s of Michigan (BOM) was started in 1962 by a dedicated group of four string banjo players. The mission was and still is, to preserve and promote the banjo and banjo music. They have met at several locations over the years in churches and banquet halls and for the past 23 years. They also meet every Tuesday at the MacDonald Towers retire-ment facility in Southfield at Telegraph and Civic Center Rd.

Any level of player is welcome and membership is not restricted to the tenor banjo. There are guitar players, five-string banjo players, bass players and a drummer along with about twenty-five banjo players at present. The Director is Brian Newsom who is also the President of Banjoes Unlimited and the North American International Banjo Convention.

The band is available for performances at a very nominal fee. For more information, contact Clyde Schabacker at 586-751-1545.

This club, along with the Windsor Banjos and the Flint Banjo Club, are the principal sponsors of the North American International Banjo Convention which is held the last week end in April in Dearborn at the Double Tree Inn, on Ford Road at Southfield.

This year will be the forth year for NAIBC which for 20 years prior was held under the name of The Great Lakes International Banjo Convention.

By far, the best music convention in the Midwest, it is attended by professional and amateur musical enthusiasts from all over North America, Europe and, occasionally, from the Orient. Also in

attendance are suppliers who present their music-related wares. It’s is a very enjoyable and economi-cal event.

Three shows are presented – Friday evening, Sat-urday matinee and Saturday evening. Tick-

ets are $10 for the evening performances and $5 for the matinee. With plenty of free parking, this is a great value for some fine entertainment!

The highlight of this Convention is the jam session that starts on Wednesday evening and is repeated throughout the convention except during the performances. Held in the hotel atrium, we have seen as many as one hundred or more players, mostly banjos, participating.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a part of a very dynamic group, come on out to the Ban-Joe’s of Michigan any Tuesday evening for an introduction. Please contact Brian Newsom on 248-756-5061 or Bob Ervin 248-320-1203 for more information. n

Many thanks to Bob Ervin, GDJS member for this photo and article regarding the Ban-Joes of Michigan (BOM) and the North American Interna-tional Banjo Convention held in April. PLANET D NONET AT GDJS

On Saturday, November 17 for our Jazz at Shield’s concert, we’re proud to present Planet D Nonet. The Planet D Nonet is a Detroit-based swing band. A typical Planet D Nonet gig might involve very early jazz from Louis Armstrong or Mezz Mez-zrow, up to Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson swing charts from the late 1920’s to early 1930’s as well as jump/swing by the great Louis Jordan.

The Planet D Nonet was founded in 2007 by RJ Spangler and James O’Donnell, both original members of the well-known Detroit band, The Sun Messengers. The “D” in the name stands for Detroit. The band has completed two tours of the southern US, appearing in nine different states, as well as an annual tour of western Michigan.

The band consists of Justin Jozwiak (alto sax and cl), Jim Holden (tenor sax and cl), Joshua James (sap, alto, bari, tenor saxes, cl and b.cl and musical director), James O’Donnell (trumpet 1 and vox and co-leader), Kenny Ferry (trumpet 2), John Paxton (trombone and vox), Shannon Wade (string bass), Michael Malis (piano), RJ Spangler (drums and bandleader).

The featured vocalist is Dan Devins, a modern day blues shouter whom can also sing standards and ballads. Please see page 4 for more information. n

Editor’s Note: All that Nancy Blake had to do was MENTION that her birthday was imminent and of course, it was an event. You know Nancy – our Social Director, Picnic Chairperson, Ticket Sales and Membership Cards lady who does it all for us. So of course, we had to reciprocate. Patrick MacCarroll of the Riverboat Ramblers volun-teered to bring their entire band, and other musicians came by to play for her as well. Think Bob Seeley, Brian Pelton, Jack Molloy, did we miss anyone? There were quite a few October birthdays there, as it turned out. Thanks again to Bob Ervin who enlightened us a little more about the fun Riverboat Ramblers, and thanks to all of the great musicians and cooks who came out to celebrate for and with Nancy.

THE RIVERBOAT RAMBLERSIn the beginning, there was the Ban Joe’s of Michigan; the

Thursday Night Jammers were made up of BOM members which lead to the Riverboat Ramblers who are made up of members of both groups. Essentially, these club members are dedicated to the preservation of Ragtime, Dixieland, show tunes, the older music and the tenor banjo.

The members who participated in the birthday celebration for Nancy Blake are:

Morgan Humecky Tenor banjo, guitar and vocalsSherry Humecky Hammer dulcimerBrian Newsom Tenor and Plectrum banjoBob Ervin Guitar and vocalsKim Dominick Electric bassPatrick MacCarroll KeyboardOther regular attendees who were not present:Dan Stuckey Tenor banjo, vocalsClyde Schabacker GuitarLeaigh Whitmeyer DrumsBetty Fornier Tenor banjo and vocalsGene Vale Tenor banjo and vocalsSmokey Humecky Guitar and varmonicaKathy Lendzion VocalsTom Lendzion Guitar, clarinet and ocalsThe Ramblers recently received Congressional recognition

for donating their time to entertain the hardworking volun-teers, at lunchtime, for the annual Lake St. Clair Nautical Coast Cleanup at the Harrison Twp. Lakefront Park.

Letters of recognition were received from Senators Stabenow and Levin as well as Congresswoman Miller.

For the most part these dedicated musicians can be described as loyal hobbyists ranging from talented amateur to professional

level players. We were very pleased at the reception we received at this ap-pearance and felt right at home do-ing what we do, playing good music and enjoying every minute of it!

We never rehearse. The result is an occasional catastrophic blow up of a song! This is known amongst us as a “train wreck.” Even that is fun! n

Below, from top, counterclockwise: Bob Seeley and Pat MacCarroll with four hands on the keys; Sherry Humecky plays a mean jazz dulcimer, while Brian Pelton’s homemade washboard proves to be Shirley Seeley’s favorite instrument. She even wore it while dancing with Bob! Rumor has it that Brian had to make another one, just for her ...

Morgan Humecky above on banjo is accompanied by Brian Newsom, top right. Jack Molloy took a turn off the keyboards to chat with Nancy, and Bill Bolle danced with Lisa Pelton! Will wonders never cease?

Club News

We have recently experienced light attendance at some Saturday Shield’s concerts (our own fault for scheduling concerts on weekends where there were other major events going on in the area). We will not make that same mistake next year. But remember that on 1st and 3rd Saturdays we need your support for our Jazz at Shield’s concerts if this jazz society is to survive. Chuck Moss has again booked super bands for 2013 that you tell us are your favorites (see page 4) so please come out and support us.

All 2013 dues for the GDJS will again be payable in January 2013 unless you joined during the last quarter of 2012. In that case, you are good through January 2014.

If you are a member who currently receives a hard copy of your newsletter in the mail and would prefer to receive your newsletter digitally (and earlier than snail mail!) call Sally Bolle on 248-813-0328 to advise. It’s so important that you notify us if your e-mail address changes! I still have many e-mails bouncing back, either because you’ve changed your e-mail address or your mailbox is full. We really do want you to receive your newsletters and jazz blasts. n

Ron Kischuk “The Masters of Music Big Band” Release Their Third CD – “Smile”

The third Masters of Music Big Band recording is a special one to Ron because all of the recorded charts were written by a local arranger. Best of all, the arrangements are by one of the band’s members – Russ Miller. Russ is currently a full-time jazz faculty member in the Department of Music at Wayne State University teaching arranging and orchestration, improvisation

and ensembles. These arrange-ments prove that there are still new and creative ways to arrange the standards, and Russ’ original compositions show that there is plenty of original big band music yet to be written and performed.

Personnel on this excel-lent recording

include Ron Kischuk on trombone, Kris Johnson on trumpet, Gary Schunk on piano, Dwight Adams on trumpet, Gene Parker on tenor sax, Marion Hayden on bass, Jodie Cochill, vocalist, Ben Jansson on tenor sax, Pete Kahn on clarinet, Ed Gooch on trombone and Russ Miller on alto sax. For information on purchasing the CD, e-mail Ron Kischuk at [email protected] or call 248-54-MUSIC. n

PLANET D NONET/R.J. SPANGLER (9-piece swing band) 11/29 Thursday, Planet D Nonet pays tribute to Billy Strayhorn at Cliff Bell’s (see address below). No cover charge. Brand new charts by Joshua James, Michael Malis, Duncan McMillan & Pat Prouty + charts by David Berger & Chuck Isreals. Jim Gallert to host event. If you are familiar with the jazz composition, “Take the A Train,” then you know something about not only Duke Ellington, but also Billy “Sweet Pea” Strayhorn, its composer. Strayhorn joined Ellington’s band in 1939, at the age of twenty-two. Ellington liked what he saw in Billy and took this shy, talented pianist under his wings. Neither one was sure what Strayhorn’s function in the band would be, but their musical talents had attracted each other. By the end of the year Strayhorn had

become essential to the Duke Ellington Band; arranging, composing, sitting-in at the piano. Billy made a rapid and almost complete assimilation of Ellington’s style and technique. It was difficult to discern where one’s style ended and the other’s began. The results of the Ellington-Strayhorn collaboration brought much joy to the jazz world. http://www.billystrayhorn.com/1997/biography.htm https://www.facebook.com/PlanetDNonet.Detroit
