Election detailsThe last day to register to vote is Oct.4, and the early voting period is set for Oct. 18-29. Early voting polling places are located at the Memorial Student Center on the Texas A&M University campus and the College Station Utilities Training Center located at 1603 Graham Rd.

Transportation Fee, Council Seat on November Ballot. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Citizens of College Station will vote on the transportation user fee and fill the vacant Place 5 city council seat in the Nov. 2 special election.

Jana McMillan and John Nichols are competing to complete the term of Larry Stewart, who died on June 21. The seat is up for a full three-year term in the May election.

The transportation user fee would create a special fund for the rehabilitation of city streets. Street rehabilitation includes pavement overlays and reconstruction but not general maintenance.

Transportation fee detailsThe monthly fee, which would be added to utility bills, would be $2 for all residential utility customers and $1 per 1,000 square feet for non-residential utility customers.

Every third year, the fee would be indexed to inflation using the Consumer Price Index (CPI). College Station voters would have to

Halloween SafetyDon’t let concerns about your children’s safety cast a spell on Halloween this year. The College Station Police Department offers these tips to ensure your Halloween is a howling good time:

• Welcome trick-or-treaters at your home by turning on your exterior lights.

• Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard to visitors.

• Drive slowly, especially in residential neighborhoods.

• Set a time limit for children to trick-or-treat on a mapped-out route.

• Trick-or-treat before dark but carry a flashlight just in case.

• If you see suspicious or criminal activity, call the College Station Police Department at 979.764.3600.

Lincoln Center Fall FestivalThe Lincoln Recreation Center will host its annual fall festival on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.

Activities will include a sponge throw, Bounce-a-Lot amusement centers, ring-toss games, bowling pins, three-point shooting contest, face painting, cake walks and a haunted house.

The Fall Festival offers safe entertainment for the entire family. Admission is free and activity tickets are five for $1. Participants are invited to wear Halloween costumes, and adult volunteers are welcome. Free refreshments will be available for children, including snow cones, juice, hot dogs and Halloween candy.

Saturday, Oct. 9, 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Old University Services Bldg., which is located at 3380 University Dr. East.

The event is FREE to residents in Brazos County’s seven-county region. Residents can dispose of unwanted paint and paint thinners, oil and oil filters, old computers, gasoline, medications, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, pharmaceuticals, and medical waste.

Items not accepted include ammunition, explosives, radioactive waste, tires, compressed gas cylinders and household or other garbage.

City Launches BlogsThe City of College Station has launched city council and city staff blogs to encourage a genuine and transparent exchange of ideas with its citizens. Bloggers include willing members of the council as well as various staff members.

While many municipalities offer blogs, College Station’s are relatively unique because they not only address substantial issues, they also allow public comments. Criticism is allowed, although comments are required to be respectful and to remain on topic.

Brazos Valley WorldfestThe fourth annual Brazos Valley Worldfest, presented by Citibank and hosted by the City of College Station and Texas A&M University, is set for Saturday, Nov. 13, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater.

Animal Control ChangesThe College Station Police Department’s Animal Control Unit helps enforce laws that protect citizens from dangerous animals and domestic animals from abuse and neglect. In March, the city council adopted several changes to the animal control ordinance.

The new rules prohibit individuals to sell animals in front of businesses and allows for a managed Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program to help control the feral cat population. Other changes pertain to dangerous dogs, fowl, rabbits, livestock and “problem behavior” of animals.
