NEWSBock References in the field of DMU

Diesel driven units - whereelectric power supply doesn‘t exist…

In the early 90's Bock became a solution provider for Diesel

driven train sets operating in the different areas and countries

where electric power supply was not available.

Open type compressors of the FK range found to be the best

solution empowered by well known quality and reliability from

the field of bus HVAC applications. Rail operating conditions,

normally stated to be much more demanding compared to the

automotive ones, didn‘t bring any obstacles for Bock technology

and the FK range started to become the favourite product for

railway HVAC applications.

Railway international standards of reliability and durability finally

lost the battle against Bock‘s common sense for the detail and

quality, which, by the way, always differentiates first class

products from the others.

Since that time Bock has been sucessfully cooperating with

many HVAC manufacturers supplying DMU markets such as

Sütrak Carrier, Behr, Konvekta, Rexxon, Faiveley or Webasto.

Bock is proud to deliver real value to rail OEMs. Namely to

Bomdardier, Alstom, Siemens and Stadler. These customers

operate their DMUs under the brand names Bombardier Talent,

Alstom Coradia Lint, Siemens Desiro or Stadler Regio-Shuttle. All

of them having “Inside.Bock“.

All the trains are in full operation nowadays and in case of new

vehicle demand on the market, Bock is providing proved

solutions like they did in the past when all mentioned projects

started.

Bock is always at your side.

Bock is continuously performing customizations and working

on new product developments to respond to latest markets

trends. Today, the company can offer rail customers great

products tailored specially for low weight and high

performance requirements.

In the last years, we developed special aluminium semi-

hermetic compressors where weight reduction, compared to

the standard product range, is reaching tremendous values

of 35%. To give you a particular example: Imagine a typical

metro vehicle of 4 saloon cars, each having one HVAC unit

with split system. This amounts to either 1200 kg using the

conventional design of compressors, or 464 kg when using

new state of the art Bock technology combining aluminium

design and the newest 2-pole motors. Possible reduction of

the weight load of compressors is 61% for one vehicle,

which brings a remarkable result energy wise, especially

when you consider the whole fleet of vehicles. Plus there will

be certainly also other positive aspects related to the design

needs of HVAC units and vehicle roofs.

Since many years Bock compressors are working in the Delhi

Metro in India. Furthermore, Bock is proud supplier of the

Hong Kong Metro and various other metros.

NEWSBock Compressors in Russia's fastest train

Reliable even in the Siberian WinterIn April 2006 and May 2006, Siemens and Russian Railways

RZD signed contracts for the development, construction and

service of high-speed trains for 30 years. The project

encompasses the delivery of eight high-speed trains. Those

trains are models whose components and systems have to

be adapted to the special climatic requirements as well as

the standards of the Russian Federation.

The ten-car trains will operate on all high-speed routes in the

Russian Federation starting with Moscow – St. Petersburg.

Based on state-of-the-art high-speed technology the trains

are characterized by an attractive design in the Russian

national colours.

Because of the high demands on the air-conditioning that is

exposed to temperatures up to -50°C, the application of

high-quality components was without question.

For the compressors, the heart of modern air-conditioning

and refrigeration systems, semi-hermetic compressors by

Bock were chosen. “We deliver high-end compressors that

are produced at our German headquarters. For a maximum

safety, all compressors are equipped with reliable oil pump

lubrication.

Even for the most extreme operating conditions of -50°C and

up to +54°C ambient temperature, a safe operation is

guaranteed”, says Marcus Reuß, Bock Key Account Manager

Railway Applications. The compressors have an established

design and more than 10.000 compressors of this size are

already used worldwide.

“As a medium-sized enterprise we are able to respond to our

customers wishes, especially when it comes to smaller order

quantities. A fact that has proven to be an advantage, such as

in the case of the compressors for the SIEMENS VELARO®

RUS high-speed train” says Marcus Reuß.

Since the HG34P followed in the footsteps of

the HG3 in 2003, it developed into a top seller

of the Bock product range and is now used in

refrigerating and air-conditioning systems

around the world.

Apart from its application in trains, the

HG34P also ensures comfortable air-

conditioning in trolley- and hybrid buses.

Compressor solutions for mobile applications

Smaller, lighter, stronger -Bock Aluminium CompressorsModern railway air-conditioning systems have high

demands on the different components of a system. Based on

those customer demands, Bock has developed special

aluminium compressors for mobile use.

The demands in the railway area that led to this development

can be roughly divided into four parts:

- Compact dimensions

- Lightweight Construction

- Sustainability & environmental protection

- Maximum efficiency

Bock responded to all those demands and developed its

semi-hermetic aluminium compressors HG22P and HG34P.

Compressors that were developed together with system

manufacturers and are already used in many trains.

For example in the new railway generation of the Scottish

Railway – First ScotRail. First ScotRail is responsible for

nearly all the rail traffic in Scotland. In 2010 First ScotRail

expanded its fleet by 38 environmental friendly trains of the

type “Class 380” with about 9.000 air-conditioned seats.

The trains of the model Desiro UK are delivered by the

Siemens railway technology branch. The trains are

manufactured in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany. The contract

with Siemens that was already signed in July 2008 has a

volume of more than 300 mio. Euro and also covers

maintenance and spare-part service.

The fact that Siemens chose the semi-hermetic Aluminium

compressor Bock HGX34P/380-4SA is a proof to Bock that it

was the right decision to focus consequently on customer

demands in this area.

In general one can say that the growing specific

requirements of the different refrigeration and air-

conditioning applications present new challenges for the

compressor. At Bock this challenge is seen as a chance to

further establish as a specialist for radial piston compressors

in various industries.

The Compressors - Bock HG34P in aluminium design

The compressor HG34P as well as its

smaller brother HG22P in aluminium

design was developed especially for the

demands in mobile areas of application.

Because of its aluminium-lightweight

construction, it has about 40% less weight

than comparable compressors.

Since its presentation at the Innotrans

2008 in Berlin, those compressors are met

with great interest and are already used in

various applications.

NEWSBock compressors in the trams of Germany‘s capital

Berlin's trams equipped with Bock CompressorsAs part of the modernisation of their tram fleet, Berlin's

transport services (BVG) placed an order for the production of

100 low-floor vehicles of the model FLEXITY Berlin with

Bombardier. Initially, four pre-series vehicles in different

variations are delivered. After a test and pilot phase, 206

additional trams can be delivered.

For the compressors, the heart of modern air-conditioning

and refrigeration systems, the manufacturer Liebherr-

Transportation Systems chose once again semi-hermetic

compressors by Bock Kältemaschinen GmbH.

“The project places high demands on Bock as the

manufacturer. They were searching for a compressor with

compact dimensions and minimal weight” says Marcus

Reuß, Bock Key Account Manager Railway Applications.

To meet those demands, Bock used the long experiences in

the manufacturing of open aluminium lightweight

compressors.

With those compressors Bock sets the benchmark in bus air-

conditioning worldwide. With the help of this know-how the

company developed semi-hermetic compressors in

aluminium design especially for mobile applications such as

those modern rail vehicles.

“With this lightweight aluminium type we could fulfil the high

demands of the train manufacturer for the Berlin railway and

we can see great potential for this product in various other

rail-projects as well” concludes Marcus Reuß.

Nowadays a topic that is gaining in importance all over the

world is the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants.

Many HVAC companies have R&D projects running for the

application of CO as refrigerant in the mobile area. 2

bus or rail applications and are

ready to meet these latest worldwide challenges.

However, matter of fact is that the use of CO in passenger 2

transport still remains a question mark. The overall impact in

this field would be significant and would mean extensive

changes in many related areas as well.

The demand for environmentally friendly refrigerants is

growing and other refrigerants besides CO are considered 2

as well. The use of those alternative refrigerants would be a

smaller step compared to the use of CO , but it seems to be a 2

probable next step coming in the near future.

Nevertheless Bock can provide components to build

prototypes of HVACs and allow OEMs in the HVAC area to

perform research and development activities in the field of

CO as well as in any other refrigerant fields.2

NEWSIndustry-specific selection software by Bock

Get there faster - with the Bock VAP for mobile applications

14

Bock already offers for some years a compressor-selection

software that helps you to find the right compressor for your

system by entering the corresponding technical

requirements.

Since the selection software included the whole Bock

compressor range for stationary as well as mobile

applications until now, the software did not take railway

specific characteristics into consideration. Starting in

September 2010, Bock offers a special railway version of the

VAP compressor selection software that will make it much

easier, to find the right compressor.

Another highlight of the new VAP for mobile applications

compared to other selection programs is the fact that it is an

online software that works without an installation on the

computer. All you need is an internet connection.
